Parameter to assess adequate feed to baby is weight gain. If child is not taking feed for last 40 days, she either must have lost weight considerable or may not gaining wt. Now she is 3 month 7 days old and her expected wt must be about 5.5 kg. If she is around this wt, you need not to worry.Whatever feed she is suckling, that is sufficient for her. 2 pediatricians have already checked baby who found baby fine.

Colic Pain - How To Treat It

Fellowship in Andrology, DNB-Urology , MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Urologist, Hyderabad
Colic Pain - How To Treat It

The word colic directly refers to the colon. Colic pain is a sharp abdominal pain followed by bouts of crying usually occurring in infants below the age of one year. The pain only last for a short period of time ranging from a few weeks to a couple of months. Very few number of babies will cry endlessly indicating towards an underlying condition.

It is mainly characterized by sharp crying for supposedly no apparent reason, irregular sleep patterns, and restlessness or owing to deviation from normal postures. The apparent causes of colic pain include indigestion and negative reaction of the sensitive gut to the breast or formula milk, although no concrete cause of the state has been discovered.

Doctors often suggest home remedies such as swaddling, pacifiers, holding and comforting the baby and more frequent feedings to reduce the condition. Since it is so common among infants and relatively less harmful, no proper medication is usually given. Physicians suggest mothers to reduce the content of caffeine, alcohol or spice in their diet. Sometimes a warm bath, burping the baby or going on more frequent walks is useful. Background music draws the attention of the baby and hence drives their focus, away from the abdominal pains.

Colic pains are mainly treated by care rather than medicine. The baby is made to feel comfortable and the distress is reduced just by being around the infant. The primary care giver plays an important role in consoling the child and helping them get through the sudden pain which further plays a significant role in personality development. Colic pains are extremely short lived and probably one of the first few challenges of parenthood. They are primarily dealt with care and feeding except in extreme cases where medicinal cures such as lactase drops and simethicone drops are used to treat the abdominal pain. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.

For dry cough, the best treatment is Sitopiladi churna with ghee. Also badam tail (2 tsf) orally mixed in milk is a great help.

Nebulisation is a method of delivering drug directly to the lungs in an emergency situation. If your doctor feels that it is a must then you must go for that as it has no long term effect.

My Daughter suffering from abeniotic band syndrome. What is abeniotic band syndrome? What is causes of this syndrome? How can we protect our children from this syndrome?

MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Jaipur
My Daughter suffering from abeniotic band syndrome. What is abeniotic band syndrome?
What is causes of this syndrome?...
Amniotic Band Syndrome occurs when the unborn baby (fetus) becomes entangled in fibrous string-like amniotic bands in the womb, restricting blood flow and affecting the baby’s development. ABS occurs randomly. It’s not genetic, nor is it caused by anything a pregnant Mom did or didn’t do during pregnancy. To date, no prenatal factors have been associated with ABS. It is extremely unlikely that ABS will affect a future pregnancy.

Above report is more in favor of Iron/ multi nutritional deficiency anemia. Blood transfusion increases Hb temporarily. Intermittent fall of Hb may be due to interrupted treatment and lack of nutritional diet as indicated by constant wt at 9 kg. To improve his wt and normalize Hb, give him Iron, B Complex, Vit C and other micro nutrients and continue at least for about 3 months after Hb comes to normal, add oil/ ghee in his nutritious diet for wt gain.

If your baby is" Active, Alert, passing urine-6-8 times/day, Accepting&tolerating breast milkand more important if above symptom does not hurt your baby. It might be just viral illness. Give only normal saline nebulisation. Most probably its just a viral imfection. Resolve spontenously.

What tests generally are very much necessary for good health of newborn baby. My baby is just 5 days old and I want to know about anything that I need to ask to doctors jaaan detail.

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
Nothing really very much necessary at birth, apart from good clinical examination by a pediatrician. But if you want to be extra careful you can get metabolic work up, thyroid screening done. You can go for bera test at 3 months for hearing.
