Hello Neeraj, Sounds like you have a muscle spasm which happens usually of you have slept in wrong position. You can apply Volini gel gently on the muscles and do a hot water fomentation. But don't massage the muscles.

My mother is 60 years old and is suffering from rheumatoid arthritis from last 4-5 years. We initially opted for allopathic medicine then physiotherapy and at last homeopathic medicine but anything helped her.

Change her food habites. Add in her food calcium, vitamines, minirales, proteins, green vegitabales salad, milk, dry fruites. Dear lybrate-user, radiating pain from back to leg is a symptom of disc bulging or spondylitis. Go for mri of lumbar spine and with reports consult in person with physiotherapist for proper treatment. Home remedies sometimes will not work.

Why You Get Muscle Cramps?

Muscle cramps often occur in the calf muscle of the back of the lower leg. It is often characterized by a momentary sharp pain along with a muscle lump beneath the skin. Just like its sudden appearance, muscle cramp disappears the same way without any botheration. However, a doctor should be consulted if you see any of the following symptoms:

  1. The pain keeps coming back
  2. The cramps result in weakening of the muscles
  3. It causes frequent discomfort
  4. It results in changed skin color, redness or swelling of the skin
  5. The condition doesn’t improve with normal care
  6. Cramps are not associated with obvious causes such as playing, exercising and jogging

What causes muscle cramps?
Any strain on muscle, dehydration, muscle overuse or simply standing for a prolonged time can lead to muscle cramps. The exact cause of muscle cramps is not known in a lot of cases. There could be the following medical conditions that could lead to such muscle cramps:

  1. Blood supply: At times when the arteries narrow down resulting in an inadequate blood supply in the leg, a sharp pain can be felt followed by muscle cramps. This can happen while exercising or playing. It disappears as soon as one rests their legs.
  2. Mineral depletion: Shortage of magnesium, potassium and calcium in the body can lead to muscle cramps. Even medication for high blood pressure can lead to cramps in the legs.
  3. Nerve compression: Nerve compression of the spine can produce sharp pain on the leg muscles. The pain worsens with longer durations of walk. The symptoms, however, can be delayed a bit if the walking posture is changed, like the way one walks while carrying a shopping cart.

What are the risk factors associated to muscle cramps?

  1. Dehydration: Muscle cramps often happen among athletes when they get dehydrated and fatigued while performing in hot temperature.
  2. Age: People over the age of 60 often lose mass in the muscle. The remaining mass gets stressed out soon, resulting in muscle cramps.
  3. Pregnancy: Pregnant women face frequent muscle cramps due to the sudden increase of body weight and restricted movements in the pregnancy period.
  4. Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions such as nerve disorder, thyroid problems, liver failure, diabetes etc. greatly increase the chance of muscle cramps.

Some common ways to treat muscle cramps:

  1. A brisk walk followed by stretching relaxes the muscles and greatly helps in staying away from cramps.
  2. A diet consisting of magnesium on a regular basis gives relief from muscle cramps.
  3. A wet cloth soaked in hot water often shows magical results and gives instant relief from muscle cramps.
  4. Being hydrated throughout the day helps with muscle cramps. It is necessary to consume enough amount of electrolytes so that muscle contraction does not happen. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor.

Short Arcs: Lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight Leg Raise: Lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.

Stop gym. For few days. Investigations advised - hb, tlc, dlc, esr, sugar f & pp, uric acid, vit d3 urine r/e x ray of the affected part. Anyway you may try- sleep on a hard bed with soft bedding on it. Spring beds, folding beds or thick mattress are harmful use no pillow under the head. Do hot fomentation. Paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days. Caldikind plus 1tab od x10. Do neck back knee & general exercises. It may have to be further investigated. Make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take. If it does not give relief in 4-5days, inform

Pain in heels is a common condition rule out diabetes & vit. D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Do hot fomentation keep a pillow under the legs at night &/when resting. Any way take caldikind plus (mankind)1tab odx10days paracetamol 250mg od & sos x 5days do ankle/foot & toe exercises it may have to be further investigated make sure you are not allergic to any of the medicines you are going to take.

its usually due to softening of the articular cartilage (lining cartilage) of the knee cap joint, which is not uncommon in females. This is usually due to harmonal inflence. Weight reduction and Quadriceps strengthening exercises help a lot. avoid sitting on the floor and squatting. If despite these pain persists then you should be examined by an ortho surgeon

Sir I was having pain in my left knee for some time. I was a regular tennis player. My Orthodox advised me undergo MRI for my left knee After seeing my MRI my Orthodox asked to refrain n stop tennis altogether. Its been now more than six months dat I have played tennis. Hello there are many reasons of pain you should go through proper investigation. Physiotherapy is the best treatment for this condition. There are many reasons for this type of pain- 1. Overuse of muscles, 2. Deficiency of vitamin d3 or calcium, or lack of water in the body, 3. Postural stress, 4. Muscle strain, etc. Please send me all investigation reports if available. I can help you by providing correct ergonomic and physio-therapeutic tips. Till then you can follow these advises:- 1. Take calcium supplements and sun bath daily to prevent further damage to your joints. 2. Avoid heavy lifting. 3. Perform some gentle exercises and stretching of your all joints. 4. No need of medicine immediately. Take rest properly. Take a little break from prolonged standing and sitting after 45minuts avoid forward bending and heavy lifting avoid prolonged standing and sitting do back strengthening excercise.

Standing calf stretch Stand away from a wall and.put your fight foot behind you and be sure your toes are facing forward. Lean forward at the ankle while bending the right knee and keeping your heel on the ground. Hold this for 30 to 60 seconds. Repeat 10 times a twice a day. Downward dog yoga stretch Get down on all fours with your hands under your shoulders on the floor. Walk your hands forward slightly on the floor. Spread your fingers apart to allow for a broad base of support. Push your hips up toward the ceiling and tighten your abdominal muscles. Keep your heels on the ground and gently try and straighten your knees. Repeat 10 times a twice a day.

Excessive pain in legs. Thighs.continuous pain which is terrible. Also a kind of swelling near the ankle part. And complete thighs n legs are heavy as compared to upper part. : keep your leg raised while sitting or lying quadriceps strengthening exercises- quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day.
