Health Benefits of Eating Broccoli

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Sexologist, Delhi
Health Benefits of Eating Broccoli

The top 5 reasons to eat broccoli are:

1) A high intake of broccoli has been found to reduce the risk of aggressive prostate cancer and may also help prevent heart disease.

2) Averaging just four weekly servings of veggies like broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower slashed the risk of dying from any disease by 26% among 6,100 people studied for 28 years.

3) Broccoli contains a flavonoid called kaempferol which has anti-inflammatory properties. This makes broccoli potentially useful in assisting with chronic inflammatory ailments, such as arthritis or gout.

4) This dark green veg also helps your body absorb vitamin D. This is due to broccoli’s high levels of of vitamins A and K, which both aid in the healthy absorption of vitamin D.

5) Broccoli may have a positive impact on our body's ability to naturally detox. This is possibly due to three phytonutrients found in unique combination in broccoli - glucoraphanin, gluconasturtiian, and glucobrassicin. This nutritional trio is able to support all steps in body's detox process, including neutralization and elimination of unwanted contaminants.

How to eat broccoli?

Broccoli is usually boiled or steamed but may be eaten raw and has become popular as a raw vegetable in hors d'œuvre trays.

As the benefits of broccoli are thought to greatly reduce if boiled, light steaming is a far healthier way of cooking it. Scientists have also discovered that steaming broccoli lightly releases the maximum amount of sulforaphane.

Please consult a gynaecologist in your area and get it done. Without supervision by a doctor doing abortion is dangerous. They will first ascertain whether the pregnancy is intrauterine and then the size of the foetus and depending on your health condition will decide which is the best method for you. Please do not go blindly on self medication. Consult a doctor personally.

Hello, PCOS or pcod s a problem in which a woman's hormones are out of balance. It can cause problems with your periods and make it difficult to get pregnant. PCOS also may cause unwanted changes in the way you look. If it isn't treated, over time it can lead to serious health problems, such as diabetes and heart disease. The most common symptoms are: Acne.Weight gain and trouble losing weight.Extra hair on the face and body.Thinning hair or even hair loss on scalp.Irregular periods. Often women with PCOS have fewer than nine periods a year. Some women have no periods. Others have very heavy bleeding.Fertility problems. Many women who have PCOS have trouble getting pregnant(infertility), depression. Regular exercise, healthy foods, and weight control are the key treatments for PCOS. Treatment (hormonal) can reduce unpleasant symptoms and help prevent long-term health problems. Try to fit in moderate activity and/or vigorous activity often. Brisk Walking, jogging, dance or aerobics are great exercise that most people can do.Eat heart-healthy foods. This includes lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts, beans, and whole grains. It limits foods that are high insaturated fat, such as meats, cheeses, and fried foods. Most women who have PCOS can benefit from losing weight. Even losing 5kg may help get your hormones in balance, regulate your menstrual cycle and can make you ovulate.

Vaginal burning and discomfort can have a lot of different causes. Certain vaginal infections such as vaginal candidiasis, trichomoniasis, and bacterial vaginosis are three infections that cause vaginal burning, itching, and discharge. It does not sound like this is your problem since you are not having any discharge, and your are only experiencing the pain till after sex. More than likely you are suffering from vaginal irritation from friction during sex. I suggest you to consult gynecologist for examination. Take care.

Unless your doctor feels there is a need to take progesterone at this time of pregnancy do not give it yourself. Consult your doctor.Let her decide after examining the baby. Most of the time in natural conception it is given as precaution rather than indicated. Some times without progesterone also everything might have gone well

What Is Causing Blood in Your Urine?

MCH-Urology, M.S. (General Surgery) , MBBS
Urologist, Gurgaon
What Is Causing Blood in Your Urine?

If there is blood in your urine, it is a sign of renal illness. While this could be happening because of various reasons, it is advisable to see your doctor soon.

Following are the causes of blood in your urine:

  1. An enlarged prostate - An enlarged prostate is a common cause of the appearance of blood in the urine in men who are in their middle ages or older. Enlargement of the prostate gland causes the urethra to be compressed. This prevents the urethra from getting fully emptied while urination.
  2. Cancer - A cancerous kidney, bladder or prostate gland can also cause blood to appear in the urine. It is another major cause of hematuria but usually occurs in older patients.
  3. Infection - Infections like urethritis, pyelonephritis, cystitis or infection in any other body organ along the urinary tract is one of the most common causes of hematuria. Such bacterial infection in the urethra can also infect the kidneys and the urinary bladder. It results in the urge to urinate frequently and also causes blood to appear in the urine.
  4. Kidney stones and bladder stones - Another reason that can cause blood to appear in the urine is the presence of stones in the kidney or bladder. These stones are crystallized minerals that are formed in the kidney or the bladder but fail to pass through the urinary tract. They cause blockage and pain and result in hematuria.
  5. Polycystic kidney disease - PKD is a kidney disorder in which cysts filled with fluid form in the kidneys and impair the kidneys, causing them to fail entirely at times. It is an inherited disease and causes blood to appear in the urine. In children who are between 6-10 years of age, kidney disorder after streptococcal glomerulonephritis can be a possible cause of hematuria.

I would advice you to go for insemination, as you have a retroverted uterus. This will help in proper depositon of semen, which does not happen in normal sex in cases of retroverted uterus. Please continue and I am sure you will concieve. If you fail to do so in 3 months, I would suggest further investigations.

Am 26 weeks of pregnant, I was 65kg when I conceive baby, now am 83KG I have put up about 20kg, which is very abnormal. Am not having sugar, BP or thyroid. However I was a fat from my childhood, I have reduced my weight being in diet and exercise. Now am not able to do diet or exercise my body is not co-operating. Am so worried about my weight and feeling stressed, how can I overcome this. Will I loose my weight after my delivery. Or what can I do for this, please help

PGDD, RD, Bachelor of Home Science
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Mumbai
Hye. This is not the time now to think about weight loss. Usually dieting for most people means crashing your food intake. This may have shown loss on the weighing scale but at the cost of losing out on muscle mass and nutrients. Now that you are back on your routine diet the body is taking up whatever it's getting. Try to now concentrate on eating right. Do not try to avoid certain foods so you don't gain weight. You weight is essential for the growth of your baby and both your immunity. Just try to enjoy your pregnancy. This time won't come back again. Also, if you follow a healthy lifestyle, good nutritious diet and stay active after delivery, you should definitely lose the pregnancy fat. So, enjoy the pregnancy and all the best health to you.

What To Expect If You Undergo a Normal Delivery?

Fellowship in Gynae Endoscopy, FMAS, DNB, DGO, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Delhi
What To Expect If You Undergo a Normal Delivery?

Pregnancy and child birth are some of the most important functions of a woman’s life, and they have a life long bearing on how her body functions as well. A normal delivery or a vaginal delivery is something that a majority of women prefer because it is one of the most normal ways of delivering a baby without having to go through an invasive or surgically induced method that will also include the aid of medication. So what all can you expect when you are going through a normal or a vaginal delivery? Here is a quick list.

  1. Birth plan: During the final trimmest of your pregnancy and especially during the ninth month, it is important to have a birthing plan in place. By this time, it will be clear that you are going through your pregnancy in a normal manner without any problems or complications that may have a bearing on the way you will deliver the child. It will be pretty clear that you are going to have a normal delivery, in which case it is important to talk to your doctor and your partner about who will be with you when you deliver the child, and at what point you may ask for an epidural. Also, remember to include the complications that can lead to the employment of other delivery methods like forceps or a caesarean section.
  2. Early phase of delivery: During the early phase of your delivery, the amniotic sac, which is a fluid filled protective sac, will burst. This sac usually protects the baby. Once this water breaks, you will be in active labour. For many women, the contractions and labour pains begin before the water actually breaks, in which case, the doctor may have to rupture the sac manually or with the help of medication.
  3. Contractions: The tightening and releasing of your uterus is known as a contraction. These contractions will start to come in lesser intervals as the delivery progresses. It is important to keep track of the number of minutes between each contraction as this will help the doctor monitor the delivery. These may not be the most reliable indication of the progression of your labour and delivery, because sometimes, these contractions may also be false alarms like Braxton Hicks contractions, which may happen at various points during your third trimester.
  4. Opening of the Cervix: The opening or dilation of the cervix will usually take place eventually along with the contractions. Usually, this opening is about 3 to 4 centimeters with a passage connecting the vagina with the uterine cavity. When this dilation reaches 10 centimeters, it means that the baby is ready to start crowning. At this point, the contractions will also be closer and you will be urged to begin pushing so that the baby may enjoy a safe passage. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Gynaecologist.
