It appears more and more from the brief that you have shared that she may be going through her ‘terrible twos’. For your information, it is at two years that children discover that they are no longer the center of the world, and it upsets them so that they want to test boundaries to see how much you will tolerate her before she either makes you reject her or she learns to control her urges and learns that you will have needs to be met too sometimes, and only after that her needs will be met: this is a very important learning she must achieve around this age: Sounds like she is not going through that phase happily. In fact she is winning this battle and ruling over you! I suggest that you give her a lot of physical contact and enjoy her company. She needs to understand that whatever happens you will love her. I hope you have taken her for all the necessary medical checks to rule out any other cause. In the meantime there are some questions that I would love answered, or for you to take him to a child psychiatrist, if there are any disturbing events. My questions: Was the conception normal? Was there a miscarriage or abortion before this child was born or after? How was the nine months of pregnancy for the mother i.e. was she under any kind of stress? Was the pregnancy normal? Was there any threat to the pregnancy? Was she on any medication? Was there any need for supplements? What was her emotional condition? Did she like the pregnancy? Was she happy during and about the pregnancy? Did she get good support from her husband? Was the delivery normal and on the due date? How long was she breast fed? Did she have any problems with bedwetting etc.? This information will help even a counselor to bring further insight into this problem. If some of these questions raise any serious concerns, you can help the child resolve it with some professional help from a child counselor. You are only getting into a competition with this child and she is winning happily but at your misery. So back off a bit and just give her boundaries and only then do you need to get into the act, if there is non-compliance. Then too do not use violence but negotiate with her (since she is sounding like a knowing child), and give her consequences, which are different from punishments. Confront the behavior and never, ever, reject the child/personality. Also do not show any loss of control and be composed when dealing with her. Focus on her positives and mildly confront the aggression: it makes no sense to fight fire with fire i.e. her aggression with yours!!! You are provoking her rebelliousness and this may lead to later repercussions that will be pretty unsavory. There is a very old book I remember reading entitled, ‘Talk so that kids will listen, and listen so that kids will talk’. Unfortunately I have forgotten the author. If you can find that book, it will help you tremendously. At the play group, please check if there are any unusual behaviors and whether someone is bullying her.

Daily Habits That Have Been Damaging Your Teeth!

Daily Habits That Have Been Damaging Your Teeth!

Using tooth picks

The worst habit you could possibly have when you have food lodgement in the mouth is using a tooth pick to get rid of it. We often try and use this as an acceptable habit even socially but few things are grosser than watching people pick out food bits after meals. If you have a cavity get it fixed. We have numerous cases where the toothpicks have either injured the gums and caused a larger infection or even worse broken in the cavity and triggered of even more pain. So stay safe from dental emergencies do not use tooth picks! while it's important to prevent food lodgement in the mouth and keep your mouth clean use things like brushes interdental brushes and floss sticks or dentists to help you do the same without harming you!

Using a hard or medium brush.

The oldest myth we have seen is brushing your teeth with a hard or medium brush. Please terminate this habit right away ensure you switch to a soft brush at the earliest.

We do not need more teeth ruined or worn off due to overzealous brushing. We see cases with the entire left side worn down and sensitive and I can tell the person is a right handed vigorous brusher. The softer the brush the better it bends and cleans between teeth as well. The gums also recede due to repeated trauma from the hard bristles so save your mouth from these constant attacks in the name of cleaning.

Scrubbing your teeth

The same principle applies when you switch from a hard to soft or extra soft brush don't apply so much pressure that the teeth and gums are still braving the injury.

You need to brush gently as though cleaning glass the force being minimum the reach and coverage being maximum!

So scrubbing is a habit we need to stop.

Not brushing at night

One of the best things we can do to avoid the dentist or any dental troubles is brushing at night. When it comes to cleaning your teeth frequency matters more than force. Ensuring you clean every 12 hours makes bacterial attacks that cause decay inactive so whenever we skip brushing at night we may not realise but it's definitely costing us.

Popping painkillers

The first sign of dental pain and we instinctively choose to ignore it hoping it will go away and if it doesn't we want to go ahead and pop a painkiller till it does. Masking the problem will actually make it bigger -while we all know this we prefer to accept the instant relief the medication provides over the tedious dental visit that may end with bad news. But imagine if we had gone at the very first sign of trouble most likely we would get away with a dental cleaning -the later we go the more often we need to go for extensive treatments.

Let's try and muster the courage to nip these problems in the bud -a habit to develop show up at the very first sign of trouble.

Do it yourself dentistry (diy) at home

We have all been our own dentists at some point!

From self medication to oral applications and home remedies when all else fails we make an appointment.

A few things are harmful and should be used with care when attempting our own dental care.

We recommend mild things like oral rinses or applications which relieve pain but do not use aspirin or any other pain killer to crush and put in the site, that can cause burns.

Also clove oil is a safe remedy but not cloves which can be sharp and hurt your cheek.

Do not try to remove shaking teeth or attempt any procedures the bleeding can be profuse and the damage severe.

In case of trauma ice to freeze the blows and water to clean the wound will work best.

In the age of technology and information let's not fall prey to easily avoidable dental habits that harm you more than they help you.

Write to us or call us at 9209200024 if you have any queries.

My Child Is Getting Stubborn. How Do I Handle This?

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Bathinda

A common scene" while you are shopping with your child, he stops in front of a shop and asks for an expensive toy. You try convincing him that he already has many. He refuses to listen, starts crying rolls over on the floor, you try to stop. You yell and shout at him but nothing seems to work. You finally buy the toy for him. Now he is happy!”

Are all kids stubborn?

Most kids are stubborn at times. This is considered normal in the first few years of life. However, if this behavior is persistent, then it calls for evaluation and introspection on part of the parents.

What problems can arise due to their stubborn behavior?

  • A pervasive stubborn and adamant attitude in children can lead to the following:
  • Increased anxiety and stress in the family
  • Child may lag behind in academics
  • Child can develop an understanding that through his behavior, he can get his way always
  • Will have difficulty adjusting in school and with friends
  • May develop a defiant and aggressive attitude

Is punishment an effective method?

Punishment works as a temporary method to stop stubborn behavior. However, it is not recommended always. First it is important for parents to understand reason for kids being stubborn.

What can parents do when child is in the midst of a tantrum?

When the child is in the midst of a tantrum, it is important that parents stay calm and composed. Time out, walking away from the situation, ignoring the child, till he gets out of it is the best solution.

What is a time out?

Time-out is a form of behavioural modification that involves temporarily separating a child from an environment where unacceptable behavior occurred. Time-outs may be on a chair, in a corner, bedroom, or any other location where there are no distractions, and reduced access to fun items, activities and people.
This procedure is preferable to other punishments such as reprimanding, yelling at or spanking the child for their misbehavior.

How much time can I give a time out for?

Time outs must be brief. A rule of thumb for time outs is" one minute per year of age, for example if your child is 5 yrs old, time out given maybe for 5 mins.

What is positive reinforcement?

Positive reinforcement is catching your child doing good and praising/ rewarding him for the same. It is an effective means to improve behavior in children. Set up a target for your child, give him stars on days when he meets set goals and at the end of the week, reward him with something that he wants. This is called behavioral charting and is very effective in kids.

Common parenting tips to be followed:

  • Children learn by observing parents. Parents attitude and behavior influences child’s behavior in a major way
  • Listen, don’t argue
  • Stay calm
  • Reinforce positive behavior. Catch your child doing any good and praise him for it. Let him know his good behavior is being noticed and appreciated, it will help to increase this behavior
  • Ignore tantrums
  • Understand your child’s behavior
  • Do not give into his blackmailing
  • Spend quality time with your children. Let them know you are available for them
  • Be aware of your own emotions and actions
  • Respect them
  • Ensure your child is engaged and busy. Boredom many times can trigger tantrums
  • As parents, understand the difference between needs and wants

Identify the antecedents to their stubborn behavior. Do not scold them or beat them, but be composed when you deal with them. Do not give in to their demands in the midst of a tantrum. Ignoring the tantrum is the best way out.

Most crucial aspect is to ensure that all members of the family agree on the same disciplining method. Convince all at home that being firm with the child when he throws tantrums is in the best interest of the child.

Respected Dr, we have 5 months' baby boy ,,,my wife has problem of low breastfeeding, she's providing powder prescribed as Child specialist, then shall we start boiled milk of cow...for his feeding?

Most parents believe that the breast milk is insuffiecient. Take weight of the child on a digital weighing machine prior to feeding and immediately after feed. This will convince you that child has got enough milk. . However if the milk is truly less, you can start undiluted, unsweetened boiled cow's milk with katori and spoon.

Exclusive breastfeeding to satisfaction of baby up to 6 months of age is only way to increase baby wt. If baby is fed properly, from 10th to 14th day of age, wt comes equal to B wt. Thereafter it increases by about 30 gm per day. Mother should take good nourishing diet. If you have any further queries please contact me privately through Lybrate.

Don't scold her or remind her for her act. Just develop habit to urinate before going to bed. Get her urine checked. If it is normal, no cause of much worry. Avoid to make her conscious. It may be helpful. Else consult pediatrician.

There is no need of admission in hospital only because the fever is high see for sign of dehydration, give plenty of liquids to drink. Only risk of febrile convusion is there at 8 months of age. Ask your doctor about the advice to reduce the risk. Always try to find out the cause of fever & worry about the cause not the fever. Treat the cause fever will automatically go if the cause is treated. Ask your doctor about the probable cause.

Encourage your wife for exclusive breast feeding till 6 months of age. Nature has provided enough milk in breast for bay. White is not residues of milk. Probably it may be fungal infection most likely due to bottle feeding, do not try to remove residues.
