Good control of diabetes over time is the key to treating diabetic neuropathy. There is no cure for neuropathy, but keeping your blood sugar within a target range can reduce symptoms and prevent them from getting worse. To help control your diabetes, eat food that is good for you and exercise. Controlling diabetes means maintaining blood sugar levels (a1c) within the target range. This will do more than anything else to help prevent diabetic neuropathy from getting worse. Initial and ongoing treatment treatment for diabetic neuropathy depends on your symptoms and the type of neuropathy that you have. In general, treatment focuses on reducing current symptoms and preventing the condition from getting worse by keeping your blood sugar level within your target range. You can keep your blood sugar levels within the target range by taking your insulin or oral diabetes medicine as prescribed, checking your blood sugar levels, following your diet for diabetes, exercising, and seeing your doctor regularly can use vitamin e tablet and if you do not get relief you contact bacl wish you good health regards

Suffering from thyroid for 3 years. Taking tablet thyronorm 50 mg. Latest test report shows TSH 0.005.what to do?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Hello, TSH level seems to be fairly low. If you are not having any symptoms, then you may continue the same dose. Then check TSh after another 8 weeks later, if it is still very low, then dose may be reduced by about a small fraction. Thanks.

I have thyroid problem what are foods I can take and what to avoid. As am under taking the treatment for pregnancy.
lybrate-userji, Thanks for the query. The foods to be avoided mainly include soy beans and soy containing products. Others like cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, mustard and peanuts should be eaten occasionally. Always consume more of green leafy vegetables, salads, fruits. Use whole grain flour for roti and chapati. Totally avoid maida and irems made of maida like bakery foods. Since you are thinking of pregnancy, it is essential to maintain TSH around 2 mU/L. Even through out the pregnancy too TSH should be maintained in that level. Thanks.

Commonest reason: concentrated urine, usually because you don't drink enough water. Also because you don't pee often!

Lybrate-user during pregnancy the level of sugar normally goes high and that is common feature and it is called as gestational diabetes as it is restricted to pregnancy event and it goes off the moment to finish the pregnancy in your case you already finished this episode, now you are at an average risk of genetic transformation of diabetes as your father had. If you maintain good routine and balance with daily exercise, you will maintain sugar levels well in control. All my best wishes.

Fertility Enhancing diet-

• Essential Fatty Acids

EFA are essential for getting pregnant. Omega 3 fat is necessary to maintain the balanced production of hormone-like substances called prostaglandins. They can also increase blood flow to reproductive organs, increase cervical mucus, and promote ovulation.

1 tsp. of fish oil per day is recommended for women consuming animal products while 1 tbsp. of flax oil per day is recommended for women not consuming animal products.

• Vitamin B12

Many women who are not able to conceive are deficient in Vitamin B12. B12 will help to balance hormone imbalances, essential for cell formation, aids in nutrient absorption and metabolism as well as overall digestion.

It is also important for the nervous system, blood supply, and the development of red blood cells.Women who are trying to get pregnant and have a B12 deficiency may not be ovulating and may have abnormal estrogen levels which can affect implantation of a fertilized egg.

B12 deficiency has also been linked to cell abnormalities of the reproductive tract which may even be diagnosed as cervical dysplasia. Vitamin B12 is found in the gut of animals and, therefore, cannot be obtained through plants. Women following a vegan or vegetarian diet are often low in B12 and should use supplements. Women trying to get pregnant, and pregnant women throughout their pregnancy should be consuming 2.6 mcg of B12 per day.
Beside taking supplements, if you’re trying to conceive, you should increase intake of beef, poultry, fish, fortified dairy or nondairy products as well as booster foods such as nutritional yeast. B12 shots are also effective.

• Protein

If you’re trying to get pregnant, you should be increasing the protein intake to about 25% of what you have previously been eating. High-quality protein with all amino acids is the best option, high-quality animal protein is also sources of other important nutrients such as iron, and B-vitamins.

• Folic Acid

Folic acid is one of the best-known vitamins to aid in pregnancy. It is essential for preventing neural tube defects, congenital heart defects, cleft lips, limb defects, as well as urinary tract defects in the baby.

Deficiency in folic acid can also increase infertility and cause pre-term labor. Folic acid can be found in liver, lentils, beans, black beans, asparagus, spinach, and broccoli. If you’re taking a supplement, then it should be should be between 600-120mcg per day.

Mr Dharmesh, Thanks for the query. Janumet is containing Sitagliptin + metformin and Januvia 100 has only 100 mg Sitagliptin. Doctor has asked you take the combination for better action. As regards the other medicine recommended by another doctor is it Homer 1 or Gemer1? What is the HbA1c% value? What is mentioned is unclear. If diabetes is under control then Fasting blood glucose should be <100 mg, PP 150 to 160 mg & HbA1c%<6.8. If you want any specific treatment advise please come in a private consultation with following details : Current Fasting, PP blood glucose levels, HbA1c%, dietary habits, actual daily diet & extent of daily exercise being done, then I will be able to guide. Your present information is unclear. Thanks.

Sir, my father is suffering from diabetes, which diet he have take and what he do to make sugar level normal.

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Sir, my father is suffering from diabetes, which diet he have take and what he do to make sugar level normal.
Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body's cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. It is a difficult task to control blood sugar in the desired normal range. Whatever we eat is metabolised to sugar in the body to provide energy for our daily activities. For the absolute control, one has to monitor his / her blood sugar at regular intervals (Self-Monitoring of Blood glucose – SMBG). Though difficult, this can be done by a glucometer and keep a record. Get an idea of Fasting sugar (FBS) and 2 hours after food (PPBS), & HbA1C (inform me) and check before dinner and after every major food. The basic idea is to reduce the food intake to 1/3 of what you take now. The dictum of sugar control is diet, exercise, diet + medicine and at later stage medicine+ Insulin will be needed. There are different diet plans of varying calories for each person depending on his activity & life style. For diabetes, hypertension (high BP) and many long-term illness control there is the need for regular advice and follow up. Just one time consultation or advice is not enough to guide a diabetic in scientifically & medically correct manner. For giving you regular follow up you ask me with all details like your daily eating pattern and medicines you take. I assure you a proper guidance. If you keep in touch personally.
