You asked: I am 18 year old, female. I have been suffering from stammering since childhood and normally with my family and other people I speak normally and hardly stutter but in public places when I am in situation such as in interviews, presentation etc I am hardly able to speak and sometimes the situation gets worse as I make faces while speaking and my stomach also squeezes. Go out of breath. So recently I was thinking to join a public speaking course or should I see speech therapist but I am confused as will it help me to improve?

Hi Tanya, Thanks for writing in. Welcome to the forum. From what you are saying, there appears to be a very strong component of social anxiety. This can be handled with psychotherapy, medicines or both depending upon the exacts nature and severity of the symptoms. Public speaking courses and speech therapy are also likely to help with respect to the specific issue of stammering in public places. But with regard to the several other aspects of this problem, speaking to a mental health expert is a good idea. Take care!

Sir. My father have problem in speaking. We have consult many Ent specialist and surgeons but all in vain. Kindly help me?

MD - Forensic Medicine/Forensic Medicine & Toxicology

A better suggestion can be given after knowing the age, duration, pre-existing diabetes/bp or other diseases. I don't think if he stopped talking suddenly then any ent specialist can help, rather go to a medicine/neurologist or else a psychiatrist.

I've noticed a developing tremor in my left arm over the last month that I've never had before, and it can get distracting enough to prevent daily tasks such as making coffee without spilks, and I've had a verbal stammering and stuttering problem. It's not severe, but I've become easily annoyed by small, simple tasks in my life and I'm uncertain what caused the onset. Is this an immediate concern, or one I can consult my family doctor about?

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
You must consult your doctor. These are not normal symptoms. Apart from the doctor please do meet with a counselor. At your age a lot of things could happen around hormonal imbalances and also from developmental issues that will come up for the last time seeking a resolution. Together they can compound matters to make you feel disturbed. But whatever the case tumors must never be neglected.

Dear lybrate-user, welcome to lybrate. Stammering is" speaking with sudden involuntary pauses and a tendency to repeat the initial letters of words" or" say something with difficulty, repeating the initial letters of words and with sudden involuntary pauses" stammering could be due to two reasons. First reason is vocal cord misalignment. Second is psychological performance anxiety. First of all you should consult an ent specialist and evaluate your vocal chords. If there is problem, ent specialist will be able to correct it. If there is no problem with your vocal chords, the best option is stammer therapy. Take care.

I would suggest you to take any kind of medicines. For some people social anxiety is pretty pervasive. The most common example is anxiety over public speaking. Making small talk, eating in front of others and using public restrooms also can trigger worry and unease for some. 1. Try a self-help manual. Self-help manuals are designed to supplement therapy, but they’re also good tools for working on your own. 2. Work with a therapist. If social anxiety is stopping you from doing things you want or need to do, or you haven’t had much success with self-help, seek professional help. Find a therapist who specializes in anxiety disorders. You can start your search here. 3. Practice deep breathing every day. It’s helpful to engage in deep breathing before an anxiety-provoking social situation, But practice this technique every day. This way it becomes second nature, and you don’t hyper focus on deep breathing and miss an entire conversation. 5. Create objective goals. People tend to disqualify the positive when they feel anxious, That’s why therapists encourage clients to create objective behavioral goals, he said. These are behaviors that anyone in the room would be able to observe. It doesn’t matter how you feel or whether you’re blushing or sweating (which you can’t control anyway) in a social situation. For instance, if you’re working in a group setting, the objective behavior would be to make three comments. This also gives you a good barometer for judging your progress. Again, you’re not focusing on whether you felt nervous. Rather, you’re focusing on whether you performed the actual behavior. Also, avoid focusing on others’ reactions. It doesn’t matter how your colleagues received your idea in the meeting. What matters is that you actually spoke up. It doesn’t matter whether a girl or guy said yes to your dinner invite. What matters is that you actually asked. It doesn’t matter how your child’s teacher reacted when you declined to volunteer for yet another school trip. What matters is that you were assertive and respected your own needs. 6. Keep a rational outlook. Dispute both bleak thoughts that undermine your performance and fuel your anxiety, and equally unrealistic thoughts that are irrationally positive. If you’re asking someone out, it’s not rational to think, “They’re definitely going to say yes.” But it is rational to consider, “They might,”. If social anxiety is sabotaging your goals and stopping you from living the life you want, seek help and try the above strategies. Social anxiety is highly treatable, You can get better, and grow in the process. All the very best.

Stammering can be made lesser only and only by speech therapy. So you should take the help of a speech therapist. Also, i'd suggest you to visit a psychologist as confidence plays a great role in dealing with this problem. I'd suggest you to speak very slowly, word by word. People may make fun of this but believe me, slowly you'll get better at it. Hope your query is answered. Feel free to ask if you have any doubts. Wishing you good health.

Dear, Anger and aggression are emotions. Anger comes when you become irritated. Irritation happens when you don't like something, or when something is repeated. As anger is an emotion, it should be vent out. You should be able to throw anger out instead of controlling it. But more perfect will be, know the frustrating situations and stop being emotional. If practiced properly, you will not get irritated at those circumstances at all. Those techniques are much easier to understand. Please post a private question with all the details and I shall help you with those tips and tricks. Take care.

I have suddenly developed blocked vocal cord from the last day. I am unable to speak properly. Neither my tonsils nor my pharynx is inflamed. Why can't I speak properly?

MBBS, MD - Psychiatry, MBA (Healthcare)

Good Morning ~ If you have been shouting very much lately or speaking in loud voices you may have aseptic laryngitis which is usually the case of loss of voice. However, it is temporary and usually gets better with voice rest, steam inhalation and soothing lozenges. You can start speaking properly in a couple of days, if it persists beyond that please consult with an otorhinolaryngologist or an ENT specialist.

Sir, I am suffering from stammering. Can you suggest me what should I do for that.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a psychiatrist evaluation.

Stammering is a speech disorder which affects your and personality. I can understand it has been giving you lot of anxiety and doubts. What you need is a therapist who can retrain the way you speak. As a start I would like you to read aloud as much as possible by taking each letter of a word at a time. L- e- t - t - e - r. Llllllllllll. Each word should extended as much as you can. This should continue for half an hour daily. Then you need to do relaxation exercises. After practicing this for one week. I will tell you next step.

Sir, my grandfather has several illnesses, and other doctors told me that it is not curable. Im mot certain what the diseases are, but im going to describe some conditions about him. My grandfather is unable to move properly and always lies on the bed. He can barely walk. His speech is very slurred and needs extra effort to speak clearly. It has gotten to the point where we are unable to understand him. He also remains always idle. He never moves and stares at the ceiling. He also had alzheimer before showing these conditions, where he sometimes forgot smaller details spoken to him. He now never speaks, does not react to our voices, and other external stimuli. Could you please tell me what is going on? Thank you.

Hi, I think your granfather is old enough to have such problem. Actually, as you told he is not able to speak or react and even move, he has become tired of speaking, coz he is clear enough that whatever he speaks others want understand and react, but I think he can definitely see others around him so please if he knows to read then, kindly write in bold letters "your affection towards him "if you really love him. I can understand from the way you have expressed your grandfather's difficulty that you love and care more your grandfather. Do not worry, you are still young to understand what exactly happened to him. Each and everyone as we Grow older and older, our organs function slowly decreases and then finally stops functioning then, that is the end, but some stay healthy for long, the reason is some are strong, some are weak, some are hereditary problem, some are not. Many reasons matter, what to do we are not God to do some magic right. But at this time, I want you to express your love to your dear grandfather through actions, Do take care of him as long as possible, he will feel the comfort and warmth definitely from you all that is the happiness you can give him. Take Care. With regards,
