Women In Their 40s - 6 Skincare Essentials For Them!

Women In Their 40s - 6 Skincare Essentials For Them!

Skin care is an essential part of health and beauty. Though some of you may avoid or ignore it for a long time while giving in way to bring on crow's feet beside the eyes, thin lines on the forehead, and fine lines over the face, yet these all can be taken care of even in your 40s. If you realize that you need to care and deserve to look good always, it's never too late to start a skin health regimen.

These are the 7 tips you need to follow to make your skin look healthy and glowing when you are in your 40s.

Know your skin type
Whatever skin product you use, always make sure that it is made for your skin type. To know that well, you must know your skin type first. Skin is generally of four types namely oily, normal, dry and combination. Know yours to start right.

1. Washing
Wash your skin everyday. Use a mild face wash. Washing after you come home from an outing is essential. Besides washing at bath time, and washing your face at night before going to bed is also important. This keeps the derm pores on the face clean, and prevents dust from piling and prevents acne and pimples.

2. Exfoliating
Exfoliation or scrubbing can be done as per your exposure to the outer world. In 40s your skin cells die sooner, and dead cells form a coat over the skin, which needs to be removed every week or so. Therefore, exfoliating the skin with a mild to normal scrubber in every 10 to 15 days is a good practice.

3. Sunscreen
This keeps the skin healthy and compact as derm pores are tightened preventing entry of dirt and oil. Use a sunscreen whenever you go out.

4. Wrinkle and anti ageing treatment
Use an anti ageing cream or serum twice a day, preferably in the morning and at bedtime.

5. Under eye care
Care for your under-eyes and prevent dark spots and patches and the formation of crows feet. These obvious formations after 40 can be healed somewhat with daily care of skin around the eyes. Make sure you use 100 % uv protection sunglasses every time you step out. Do not use harsh scrubs or massage the area.

6. Lifestyle
Sleep at least 8 hrs a day. You can do yoga or meditation to relax your facial muscles.

Hirsutism (Excess Facial Hair): Is Laser Surgery Safe?

Hirsutism (Excess Facial Hair): Is Laser Surgery Safe?

Excessive hair growth on a woman is also known as Hirsutism. This differs from the usual fine 'peach fuzz' that covers the rest of the body.

Hirsutism has a number of causes. Some of the most common reasons for this condition are:

  1. Hormones - Hirsutism is also linked to an abnormally high level of male hormones like androgens in the body. This is usually seen in cases where women suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, Cushing's syndrome or tumors in the adrenal gland.
  2. Medication - A shift in hormone levels is also a common side effect of many types of medication. This is typically seen in drugs that include hormones, such as anabolic steroids, drugs that spur hair growth and drugs that help with endometriosis. Facial hirsutism can be treated in a number of ways.
  3. Genes - Hirsutism often runs in families. Thus, if your mother or grandmother suffered from this skin condition, chances are that you may suffer from the same. This is most commonly seen in people from the Mediterranean region and South East Asia.

Laser Surgery is safe:
First of all, laser hair removal is precise. The laser only targets the pigmented area of the skin on your face, such as the hair follicle. This is why only the hair follicle is burned and not the skin surrounding the area, making it a safe procedure.

  1. Laser hair removal is most effective on the hair in the early part of the hair growing stage. A concentrated beam of light is aimed at the hair follicle. The laser then converts its energy into heat and heats up the hair follicle, preventing it from growing any further.
  2. Laser hair removal removes unwanted hair from your face at the speed of light. The laser is designed to treat several hairs in a large surface area, all at the same time. There is no downtime after the service and no sticky residue left behind.

Identifying and Treating Melasma - How to Prevent Age Spots?

MD - Skin, VD & Leprosy, Diplomate, American Board of Hair Restoration Surgeons

Identifying and Treating Melasma - How to Prevent Age Spots?

Flat, grey, brown or black spots which usually occur on the sun exposed areas of the human skin are called Age spots. They are also termed as senile lentigo, liver spots, solar lentigines or sun spots.

Serious conditions of age spots include:

  1. Moles
  2. A malignant skin cancer condition called melanoma.
  3. A type of skin cancer condition called lentigo maligna.
  4. A non-cancerous skin growth called keratosis.

Noticeable characteristics of age spots that are identifiable include:

  1. 1. Darkened pigmentation
  2. 2. Irregularity in border
  3. 3. Combination in colours
  4. 4. Size increase over a short period
  5. 5. Bleeding, itching, redness or tenderness

Diagnosis-

The procedure for diagnosing is usually performed by dermatologists. If the doctor has any serious concern about the skin, a skin biopsy might be needed which would require the doctor to analyse a small sample of the skin. A local anaesthetic would be applied and a small portion of the skin would be cut away. Examination of the sample would be performed in the lab in order to determine whether there is a possibility of a condition other than solar lentiginosis.

Treatment-

Treatment is not usually required as age spots are harmless. However, for cosmetic purposes, people choose to treat the age spots. Some of the treatments include:

  1. Prescription of bleaching creams, often coupled with retinoid creams and steroids are used to lighten age spots.
  2. Dermabrasion is performed using a rotating brush to remove its surface layers and scour the skin. Redness and scabbing might be felt.
  3. Cryotherapy is performed where liquid nitrogen is used to freeze the skin of the age spot which in turn destroys the dark colour produced by the melanin. There is a possibility of scarring during this procedure.

Scalp Micropigmentation - How Can It Be Managed?

Scalp Micropigmentation - How Can It Be Managed?

Scalp micropigmentation is a non-invasive treatment option that uses tiny micro-needles to deposit pigment into the scalp. This result creates the appearance of tiny hair follicles that help to restore the look of fuller hair.
This treatment modality was introduced in 2001 by Dr. Alvaro Traquina in an article published in a Dermatologic Surgery medical publication. The article was titled, Micropigmentation as an Adjuvant in Cosmetic Surgery of the Scalp.” His title, text, and pictures clearly defined the use of the pigment as a concealer.

This treatment may be used to restore receded hairlines, thicken remaining hair, camouflage any scarring on the scalp and to create the look of close-cropped hair. Being able to accurately replicate one’s own natural hair follicles and hair color, scalp micropigmentation aids to strengthen and add density to thinning areas, creating an undetectable illusion of thicker and stronger hair. One of the most amazing things about scalp micropigmentation treatment is that it requires minimal continued maintenance and carries no lifestyle or dietary restrictions.

This treatment is able to conceal the following types of scarring on the scalp:

  1. Strip scarring
  2. Plug scarring
  3. Alopecia
  4. Accident scarring

This is hugely beneficial to those who are partially or asymmetrically bald. For people who have experienced patchy baldness, they know how embarrassing it can be to have such a condition. Scalp micropigmentation helps to restore the confidence and get rid of the complex, for people who were uncomfortable earlier.

Scalp micropigmentation is not only great for men who experience baldness or thinning hair, or for men who need to provide coverage to a scar, but it is also extremely beneficial for many women as it is a great cosmetic option for ladies who have thinning of hair.

This procedure is also called hair tattoo in layman terms. However, it is not to be mistaken with a tattoo on the head, as this is a medical treatment and requires more specialized equipment to be performed. A number of hair clinics all around the world now offer scalp micropigmentation. People everywhere are able to benefit from this treatment modality. Since it a permanent treatment, it is a great alternative for those who are considering hair transplantation.

Scalp micropigmentation gained sudden popularity in recent times due to the adoption of this technique by certain celebrities. Although it is a bit painful to undergo this procedure as it is after all a medical grade permanent tattoo on the head, it is seen to be way less painful than a traditional tattoo.

It is always advisable to see your dermatologist to be confident about this treatment modality, before making up your mind to go for it. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

When Should You Go For Laser Skin Tightening?

When Should You Go For Laser Skin Tightening?

Ageing is an irreversible process of human existence. With ageing, your skin will start to show problems and one of them would be the loosening or sagging of skin. While there are many treatments available to counter this problem, one of the most effective and popular methods is laser skin tightening.

In this method, a focused beam of infrared light is used to heat up the collagen under the skin. This triggers collagen growth resulting in the skin becoming tighter, thus, reduces  sagging, wrinkles, lines and other blemishes in the process.

Who can go for laser skin tightening?

Laser skin tightening is targeted towards both men and women of any age. Most of the candidates who avail of laser skin tightening are within the age range of 30 to 60 years and have common complaints about skin caused due to age. Some of the problems that laser skin tightening can deal with very well are mentioned as follows:

  1. Tightening and repairing loose facial skin
  2. Reducing fine lines all over the body
  3. Reducing wrinkles all over the body

However, you should know that laser skin tightening will not be able to correct loose facial skin if they form jowls or droopy sacs. In such cases you may need to avail of other surgeries, such as a face lift to correct the laxity of facial skin. You can then follow it up with laser skin tightening to eliminate the remaining wrinkles or lines.

Which of the areas of the body can be treated by laser skin tightening?

This form of treatment has been found to be very effective with skin from all over the body. Some of the areas which can be treated are

  1. Abdomen
  2. Legs
  3. Arms
  4. Face
  5. Buttocks
  6. Neck among others

Laser skin tightening can treat even moderate amount of laxity in all of these areas, thus reducing the need to go for more invasive types of surgery such as tummy tuck surgery or even liposuction.

When would laser skin tightening not be applicable?

Laser skin tightening is a very commonly availed procedure all around the world and there are very few risks usually associated with it. However, it is not advisable in certain circumstances:

  1. If one is prone to having herpes outbreaks
  2. If anyone has suffered or is currently suffering from skin cancer
  3. It is not recommended for pregnant women either

Acne Scar - 6 Ways To Get Rid Of Them!

Acne Scar - 6 Ways To Get Rid Of Them!

Acne scars look bad and often interfere with your bright looks, as they make you feel embarrassed and unfresh. You use more makeup to cover them or avoid going out in order to hide them. However, instead of hiding your face or the scars, you may try these treatment options to remove the scars instead and feel brighter and better.

  1. Chemical peels: This method involves the application of a chemical peel on the skin. The acid in it removes the superficial skin layer to improve the appearance of the scar. This works well on lighter scars, and a licensed medical practitioner, nurse or cosmetologist can do this procedure.
  2. Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion: This technique involves using a high speed brush on the skin to polish the portion of the scar and make that part of the skin even, so that the scar looks lighter. If your skin doctor feels that you don't need serious dermabrasion, then he may use a microdermabrasion where small crystals are sprayed onto the skin surface to remove the skin cells over the scar and improve appearance.
  3. Fillers: Fillers are used on the skin which gets depressed due to the acne or scars. There are some binding materials like collagen or Hyaluronic acid, which can be injected through an injection, and this keeps the skin smooth, scar free and elevated for some time after which the injection has to be repeated. This has to be a continuous treatment until your skin starts to appear normal again.
  4. Retinoid creams: The retinoid creams are especially beneficial on scars if applied patiently for a prolonged period. These creams come with little side effects like burning, drying or peeling of the skin, but over a medium to long term application, all scars do get removed.
  5. Laser treatment: A combination of a few types of laser treatments or just one type depending on the acne stage or redness is used. This smoothens the skin and removes the acne scars by removing skin cells from the area.
  6. Punch Excisions and Skin grafting: This is a surgical technique. The acne scar can be removed by cutting a portion of the skin, and removing it. Normally, this procedure is combined with skin grafting, where the hole created by the acne is filled up either through stitches, or through grafting of the skin. This is actually the most invasive process to remove scars and only done when you have a serious, permanent and stubborn scar which can't be effectively removed by other techniques.

Hello lybrate-user. This is interconnected. You probably have seborrheic dermatitis. Please visit a dermatologist. You need comprehensive treatment. For starters, use Cetaphil cleansing lotion twice a day to wash face. Nothing else. And a moisturizer.

The Right Age For Anti-ageing? For You, Its Now!

MD - Skin, VD & Leprosy, Diplomate, American Board of Hair Restoration Surgeons

The Right Age For Anti-ageing? For You, Its Now!

Quite often we think that we are still quite young to take anti-ageing treatments. Infact we feel offended when our dermatologist suggests one. But what is the right age to do something about it? it is when you think'i used to look better, 5 years back. Which means you are already on the ageing slope and loosing your race with time. So here's a quick look at when to do what.

1. In the 20s to 30s.

This is the age we feel we are loosing glow. So you could go for peels, microdermabrasion, laser facial rejuvenation, prp mesotherapy, and most necessarily botox.
Botox is a treatment to prevent development of wrinkles. So you have to take it before they develop!

2. In the 30s to 40s.

This is when we feel little lines coming around our eyes and mouth or forehead, sagging of face and neck, a heavier jawline and double chin, more visible open pores, and dull complexion. Now is the time to give urself a minifacelift with threads and fillers, remove the lines with botox and fillers, get a visibly radiant complexion with prp or lasers and tighter skin with lasers, dermarollers or ultrasound therapy.

3.40s to 50s.

Now we can see more evident signs of ageing setting in with frown lines, sagging face and neck, wrinkles around mouth, sunken or swollen under-eye area. A nonsurgical facelift is the best option for you to take away the signs of ageing.

So friends, don't wait till age takes its toll on your face and it's too late to reverse things. Act now to win the race!
