Is there a genetic factor to strokes? What medications are best for the treatment of asthma? What are their side effects?

PHD, MD
Ayurveda, Udupi
There is no such direct relation bet genetics and stroke but risk factors of stroke like blood pressure and diabetics is of genetic tendency. Familial asthma can be controlled with preventive measures like changing diet and medicine but total cure is difficult. Continuous intake of herbal medicines like swamala (dootapapeshvar, chawanaprasham is reducing the severity and frequency of attacks and also well respond to simple medicines of ayurveda or other medicnes during attack.

My child of 6 years is not putting on weight for the last 3 years or so. His appetite is ok but suffers from allergy and respiratory problems from time to time . He is active however but will like him to add some kilos .

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), F.I.A.M.S. (Pediatrics)
Pediatrician, Muzaffarnagar
Average weight of child at 6 year is about 20 kg. If your son is around of this you need not to worry since he is active. You may increase some oily and protein in diet. Otherwise it is better to leave him on his own choice of nutritious diet. If he is suffering respiratory problem, consult doctor who after assessing his problem, he may advise if respiratory problem is to do any thing with his weight gain.

My Dad's sonography tells that he has moderate left pleural effusion, what does that mean and what should we do now?

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine), Certified in Evidence Based Diabetes Management, MNAMS
Internal Medicine Specialist, Kolkata
Thank you for the query. Plerura or pleural space, is a sac like covering around our lung. It is a potential space and air, fluid and blood can collect in it. Pleural effusion implies that there is collection of fluid in the pleural space. When there is a collection in this space, the normal function of the lung (gaseous exchange) may be hampered. It would have been helpful if you would have mentioned your father's age, and whether he is suffering from any comorbidities, also whether he has any addictions (like smoking). The commonest cause of pleural effusion is infection (usually bacterial). Other causes may be tuberculosis, mitosis or conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. Liver disease, kidney problems and cardiac failure also causes pleural effusion, but they mostly bilateral (both sided). It is advisable that you visit a physician or chest specialist. A chest x-ray will be needed. Some blood tests like complete haemogram will be needed, and analysis of the pleural fluid may be done. Regards.

I have cough and fever since 2 weeks so which medicine should I take?

Certified Diabetes Educator, Registered Dietitian (RD), PGDD, Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (B.U.M.S), General Physician
Dietitian/Nutritionist,
Firstly there's no lifelong cure for the common cold. Antibiotics are only effective against infections of throat and are of no use against cold viruses. Over-the-counter (otc) cold preparations won't cure a common cold or make it go away any sooner, and most have side effects. A saltwater gargle 1 teaspoon salt and 1/2tsp turmeric dissolved in a glass of warm water can temporarily relieve a sore or scratchy throat. To help relieve nasal congestion, try saline (pure salt water) nasal drops. If you have a throat infection, or a viral cold then I will prescribe appropriate meds based on your detailed assessment. Do reply back for medication prescriptions. Being also a general physician and registered dietitian, I prescribe both evidence based herbal as well as allopathic medicines complementing with dietary guidelines and home remedies carefully personalized for each individual patient.

Problem in breathing suffering from asthma and now i am also suffering from heart abnormal rhythm problem . how to cure? please advice

DAA, DNB
Pulmonologist, Bangalore
Hi. I understand your concerns. Asthma is a common allergic condition which is not curable but definitely be controlled so that you lead a symptom free life. You will need to undergo pulmonary function test to diagnose and to assess the severity of asthma based on which treatment can be tailored. You will benefit from inhalers. Hope your questions were answered. Thanks.

I am having sinus. Is there any way to solve this problem? I am 14 years old.

AUTLS, CCEDM, MD - Internal Medicine, MBBS
General Physician,
Several things can be done to prevent cold: -Always wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into your hands, blowing your nose, after touching someone who is sick, or when using public restrooms or telephones. -Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. -Get plenty of rest/sleep.staying at home will keep you from spreading germs.Avoid people who have a cold or cold symptoms. -Drink plenty of fluids(veg/tomato soups, dal water/coconut water/herbal tea etc), and eat nutritious food(like sprouts/boiled eggs without yolk with milk). Avoid foods or drinks with caffeine which can impair your sleep -Treatment:A cold usually lasts for a week or two. Unless you develop complications, you shouldn't need medical treatment. -Complications like infections of the ears, throat, sinuses or lungs must be treated with antibiotics. -Gargle to keep from getting a sore throat. -Use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation. -Tablet nasorest-p once/twice daily may ease breathing. -Do steam inhalation once or twice daily.
