Are there screening tests that can find lung cancer early? How many people get lung cancer?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear sir, early diagnosis of lung cancer can be made by screening chest xray, but it shouldn't be done very frequently as there is risk of radiation exposure so annually once is fine unless there is some problems like cough, blood in sputum, voice change, breathing difficulty etc. Lung cancer is the most common cancers relatrd deaths amongst males and the incidence is amongst males in nearly 7percent of all cancers.

My 5-year-old daughter has asthma. What is the effect of using an asthma preventer long-term? I heard that using it for years might cause bone shrinkage. Is it true? Are there any vitamins or supplements to help vision?

Dear lybrate-user, I can feel your concern. The best remedy for asthma management is to prevent exposure to the substance causing the allergy. Dust, animal hair, incense stick, smoking, strong smells, acute changes in weather and moisture in walls are some common causes of asthma attack. If you can pin point the cause then you can surely go for prevention but otherwise we prescribe the inhalation medicines and nasal sprays along with oral anti allergic medicines can surely help. Also take food in time and avoid very spicy and fried food as it may lead to acidity which in turn can mimic asthma.

MBBS, DPM
Psychiatrist, Bangalore
Dear Chandra, You may be knowing the health problems that you will get as you continue smoking. Now, you got cough and pain right side (may be throat or chest), it is time to STOP smoking. For cough and pain, please consult a local doctor who will treat you. For stopping smoking, build up your motivation level and fix an emotional day as 'quit day'. Stop keeping cigarettes in your pocket or home or work place. Keep nicotine gum ready, if you get withdrawal symptoms of sudden stopping of smoking. Congratulate yourself with a gift or praise every day of no smoking. Please continue these things for 12 weeks. Take the help of a family member to motivate you continuously

If you have cough without sputum (sputum is a mixture of saliva and mucus coughed up from the respiratory tract), I would like to advise you to - 1. Take proper rest/ drink lot of fluids and take proper homemade food. 2. Do warm saline gargles 2-3 times a day for 2-3 days, if there is sore throat. 3. Take a cough syrup (grilinctus or banadryl) 10 ml three times a day for 2-3 days. 4. In case you also have headache, body-ache, or fever, take tablet paracetamol 500 mg after taking food. Maximum 3 tablets with gap of 8 hours can be taken in a day. If you have cough with sputum please follow - 1. Take proper rest/ drink hot fluids and take proper homemade food. 2. Take steamy showers, and use a humidifier. A hot shower can help a cough by loosening secretion in the nose. 3. Warm saline gargles 2-3 times a day for 2-3 days, if there is sore throat. 4. Syrup ambrodil - 1 teaspoonful three times a day for 3 days.
