BPTh/BPT

Back exercises. Many people go to physiotherapists with back pain. Here are two exercises that help to relieve pain and reduce stiffness in the back: •Dear, 1. Lie on your back with both of your legs straight. In this position, bring your left knee up close to your chest. Hold this position for 10 seconds. Return your leg to the straight position. Repeat with the right leg. •2. Stand up with your arms on your side. Bend to the left side while slowly sliding your left hand down your left leg. Come back up slowly and relax. Repeat with the right side of your body.

Advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

Back pain is commonly caused by postural stress, muscle strains, disc injuries and arthritis.

I have got lower back pain. My age is just 22. My work place is 20 km from my house I go there by bike. What can I do to get relief from my back pain.

MPTh/MPT, CKTP
Physiotherapist, Bhubaneswar
1. First of all you need to wear a good quality back support belt only while driving. 2. You should avoid any mattresses of springy kind and adopt any firm mattresses for sleep (synthetic foam is a good one) 3. Daily workout is necessary for improving blood circulation to that part of the body. Do brisk walking or jogging for about 30 min minimum and back extension exercise + spinal rotation exercise. Minimum 45 min - 1 hr exercise is recommended daily for about 5 days a week & rest 1 day yoga for improving flexibility + 1 day pilates / core strengthening exercises. 4. Have balanced diet. Increase your protein + calcium+vit-d3+ antioxidants+ daily water intake.

She is delaying her periods from a week and having problem like back ache and very frequent she goes to washroom. She has tested for pregnancy using Prega news and test shows -ve. What she can do to be sure that she is not pregnant and what she can do to get the periods and to avoid frequent going to bathroom. I anticipate a reply from you.

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Pregnancy test should be done only after 7 days of missed period. So if it was expected on 3 march then it should be done on 12 march (added 2 days for the feb). If negative then keep repeating it every week till menses comes. You have to read it within 5 min of putting the urine and even faint second line is positive. Also as you r having backache, that means most probably menses r going to come soon. Also symptoms of pregnancy will appear only after 2 weeks of missed period.

Try sleeping in the flat floor instead of bed and change your bike seat very soft and spongy if constipation is available have lot of water and make your bowels habits good. Don't do any exercise unless you do not have any pain, if it aggravate by doing exercise then consult a near by ortho specialist.
