What are the symptoms of cancer how often it can cause because of smoking m suffering from heavy cough is that the symptoms?

DAA, DNB
Pulmonologist, Bangalore
Hi. I understand your concerns. Cancer can manifest in different ways. If you are a smoker and have long term cough then better get evaluated by detailed examination and investigations like chest x ray. Stop smoking before it causes you any more harm. Consult a pulmonologist for the same. Hope your questions were answered. Thanks.

Breast Cancer - 4 Common Symptoms

Breast Cancer - 4 Common Symptoms

Breast cancer is a type of a cancerous infection that develops in the skin cells of the breast. This condition is more commonly diagnosed after you have skin cancer and is more common in women than men. There are certain signs to identify this disease, which are as follows.

1. Breast lumps - Lumps are patches of skin that occur due to the thickening and swelling of the skin. Breast lumps is a very common phenomenon for women but that does not always lead to a breast cancer; however, frequent and reoccurring instances of the same increases the risk of breast cancer. A breast lump is easily identifiable through the naked eye as it looks different from the surrounding tissues.

2. Blood discharge - The nipple is one of the most sensitive areas in the human body. In case of women, it is meant to emit milk during pregnancy, in order to feed the infant externally. A probable symptom of breast cancer can also be a frequent discharge of blood from the nipple without any visible damage or injury.

3. Breast changes - If you are experiencing any visible changes in the size, appearance or shape of the breast, then it is an indicative sign that you may have breast cancer. Thus, it is of paramount importance that you observe, touch and physically examine your breast regularly for changes. If there is any major change detected then it is advisable to consult a doctor.

4. Inverted nipple - The tip of the nipple is generally bulging and pointing outwards both in cases of men and women. But sometimes the tip of the nipple is pushed inside due to excessive suction caused by the skin tissues present inside the breast around the nipple area. This suction forces the nipple to grow inwards which is abnormal and might harm the breast and skin in various ways.

However, apart from these main symptoms, some other signs are also there that increase your chances of being diagnosed with breast cancer. They are redness or pitting of the skin over your breast like an orange, peeling or scaling of the pigmented area around the nipple, dimpling of the skin on the breasts, and such others. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Gynaecologist.

My Grandpa (71Y old) is suffering from pancreas Cancer. His CA-19.9 Tests Result was more then 1200 on last Saturday. His tumor size on the head of the pancreas is 30x34 mm. What are the precautions he should take to stop growth of the cancer tissues and what medicines he has to take?

DNB, MBBS

He must go for the radical treatment. What about biliary functions? if surgery is possible, go for it or else atleast bypass surgery followed by chemotherapy.

My teenage girls want to use nail polish, but I have heard that many nail polishes contain formaldehyde and can cause cancer. Is it safe for my daughters to use it?

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Now a days most renowned brands do not use formaldehyde, though once in a while it's okay to use, we do not see too many cancers linked to nail polish usage. It is definitely of concern for the workers working in nail paint factories, who are in chemical contacts in many ways

DNB, MBBS

Dear sir, preliminary symptoms of oral cancers are white patches or leukoplakia, reddish patch or erythroplakia, reduced mouth opening etc are premalignant symptoms. Otherwise ulceration, abnormal growth, bleeding from oral cavity, difficulty in swallowing, change in voice, lump in neck etc are symptoms of cancer.

Breast Cancer - Know The Risk Factors Associated With It!

Breast Cancer - Know The Risk Factors Associated With It!

Detecting a lump on your breasts can be stressful for any women. Breast cancer is a common type of cancer and is said to affect primarily affect women though 1% of breast cancer cases affect men. Breast cancer can be categorized into different types based on their capability to affect surrounding tissues.

The most common amongst these are:

  • Ductal carcinoma in situ
  • Invasive ductal carcinoma
  • Invasive lobular carcinoma

Breast cancer is caused by mutations of a person’s DNA cells. This could be inherited from one’s parents or acquired by an unhealthy lifestyle. These DNA mutations cause cells in the breast tissue to multiply rapidly and turn cancerous. The risk factors for breast cancer can be categorized as modifiable and non-modifiable.

Modifiable risk factors:

  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Obesity
  • Use of combined hormone therapy after menopause
  • Lack of exercise

Non-modifiable risk factors:

  1. Age
  2. Family Medical History
  3. Personal Medical History
  4. Atypical hyperplasia
  5. Early start of menstruation cycle
  6. Presence of dense breast tissue
  7. Inherited genetic mutations

As with any other type of cancer, the earlier it is diagnosed, the easier it is to treat. In its early stages, breast cancer is not painful and has negligible symptoms. In most cases, it is detected only by finding a lump on the breast or through a mammography. This lump may also be present in the armpit or above the collar bone. Some of the other symptoms of breast cancer include:

  • Nipple inversion
  • Discharge from the nipples
  • Changes in the colour and texture of skin covering the breast

Breast cancer has five stages beginning from 0 and going up to 4. This is based on the size of the tumour, involvement of lymph nodes and whether or not metastasis has occurred.

  • Stage 0: At this stage, the tumour does not affect the lymph nodes and has not metastasized. Thus at this stage, it is noninvasive.
  • Stage I:  In this case the tumour is smaller than 2 cm in diameter and has not spread to any of the surrounding tissues.
  • Stage II: In this stage, the cancerous tumours are still fairly small in size but also affect the surrounding lymph nodes.
  • Stage III: These tumours are larger than 5 cm in diameter and involve the lymph nodes to a greater extent.
  • Stage IV: This is also known as metastatic breast cancer. In this stage, the cancer cells metastasize to other parts of the body.

Surgery is the most preferred form of treatment for breast cancer. This may be combined with radiation, chemotherapy, targeted therapy or hormone therapy depending on the stage and type of cancer, the patient's overall health, age and personal preferences. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Lump discovered please help Hi, I have never had a lump in my breast before I'm 24 years old and I'm worried. The lump is on the same side as where I had an abscess removed recently. It's red and inflamed on the outside and tender to touch. Wondering what it could be, thanks .

Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS, FICS
General Surgeon, Delhi
It could be residual collection with added inflammation. Try taking some antibiotic and anti inflammatory medication for few days. If it subsides then there is nothing to worry. If it does not then you should have yourself examined by a surgeon.

I am 23 years old female I am having lump in right side of my breast and it has increase in size! I don't have any pain in it the lump can move every where in breast. It is movable. Is it cancerous or non cancerous?

MD - Obstetrtics & Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Mumbai
It looks like it is fibroadenoma, it should be removed only if painfull and increasing rapidly in size after initial investigation like mammography and sonography of the breast and/or FNAC. Fibroadenomas are not cancer and don’t increase the risk of developing breast cancer. They occur because of an increased sensitivity to the female hormone estrogen. It is very common can occur in numbers. Most are about 1 to 3cm in size but occasionally, it can grow to more than 5cm. Most fibroadenomas stay the same size. Some get smaller and some eventually disappear over time.
