How to Prevent Your Child from Developing Type 2 Diabetes?

How to Prevent Your Child from Developing Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a chronic metabolic disorder that prevents the body from processing sugar or glucose. The disorder causes insufficient production of the hormone Insulin (responsible for regulating sugar into the different parts of your body); or the body's failure to respond to the hormone produced. Although no cure is available for T2DM, there are several ways in which you can help prevent Type 2 diabetes in your child. These are:

1. Get your child to indulge in some physical activity - Spending about 60 minutes of the day on physical activity can help your child to ward off Type 2 diabetes. In terms of screen time, it shouldn't be over 2 hours a day. By doing so, he or she ends up building his or her muscles as well as gets rid of extra fat from the body. An active life would also help your child to maintain an optimal body weight with obesity being a cause of this form of diabetes. Whether it's a sport like swimming, cricket or basketball, or even walking and dancing, physical activity in any form can help in preventing your child from developing Type 2 diabetes.

2. Plan a well-balanced diet for your child - Encouraging your child to have healthy foods and making right food choices can also lower his or her chances of getting this metabolic disorder. Foods high in fiber like whole grain cereals and bread, lentils, fruits, and vegetables should be consumed. Similarly, foods low in trans and saturated fats like lean meat, chicken, yogurt and cheese should be included in your child's diet. Processed foods, as well as sugary drinks, should be no-no when it comes to your child's diet.

3. Adopting proper eating habits - It is not only making the right food choices that are important but eating right as well is vital for preventing the onset of diabetes. Having meals with fix portion sizes is a habit that you need to develop in your child. Ideally, half the plate should be filled with vegetables and fruits; a quarter with lean protein like chicken; and the remaining with whole grain. To accompany the meal, make your child have one cup of no-fat or low-fat milk. Desserts like ice cream and cookies should be allowed only once or twice a week.

My daughter is suffering with amleopia ie, lazy eyes, and is on treatment of putting patches on either eyes. But it was suggested that it should be worn for 6hrs but we r able to make her wear on for 4 hrs, because of different reasons. Plz let us know would it get rectified like this ever or she has to wear it for 6hrs. My daughter is 6 years old.

Pleas make sure she uses the patch for the number of hours required. It is only at this age that amblyopia can be treated. Once she reaches teens , it will be almost impossible to do anything about it. You can make it seem like a game if she does not use the patch. All the family members can also wear a patch, so that she feels it is like a game.

My relative has a 14 year old boy. He is suffering from urine fall on bed in night. Kindly resolve the problem.

Diploma in Child Health (DCH), MBBS
Pediatrician, Faridabad
Firstly urine r/e to be done to find out any evidence of infection. If urine examination is alright then see nearly at what time child passes urine on bed. Try to ask him to pass urine about half an hour before. In that way he will develop gradual bladder control. Pt. Need psychological support also. He is not to be felt let down if happens to pass urine on bed. Rather make him assure that nothing has happened wrong, you will be alright if you follow the above given advice. If still problem is not solved then medicines are to be given-like adiuretin nasal spray as per advice from doctor.

keep your leg raised while sitting or lying quadriceps strengthening exercises- quad clenches: lie flat on your back or sit upright on a chair with leg kept horizontally on another surface. Now, tighten the muscle on the front of the thigh by pushing your knee down. You should feel your thigh muscles clench, hold for 3 secs. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Short arcs: lie flat on your back or sit upright with your leg placed horizontally on a flat surface like a chair or bed. Place a rolled up towel under the knee. Pull your toes towards you and clench you thigh muscles. Slowly lift your foot up off the bed until your knee is straight (keep your knee resting on the towel). Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower them on the chair. Repeat 10 times twice a day. Straight leg raise: lie flat on your back. One leg and knee will be straight and other leg should be bent. Pull your toes towards you and tighten/clench the muscle on the front of the thigh, locking your knee straight. Lift your foot up in the air, about 6 inches off the bed. Hold for 3 secs and slowly lower the leg. The knee must remain straight the whole time you are doing this exercise.

Treatment of asthma depends on frequency and severity of symptoms. If severe, then may need preventive medication for long period. Undertreatment is more harmful. Need to be managed appropriately. You shall show to a pediatrician. For good vision, take healthy diet. No particular vitamin supplement.

hello, children will eat whenever they are allowed to eat. you will help them learn to regulate the food habits, just by watching portions of food, limiting in between snacking, Integrate some physical activity, sign him him up for a physical sport- dance, gymnastics, a martial arts like karate/taekwondo or basketball, anything to get him moving as opposed to sitting.

To augment the quantity of breast milk, take 1 gm roasted wheat flour, 10 gm walnut leaves, mix the two and prepare chapattis. Fry the chapattis in ghee made from cow's milk. Eating these chapattis for seven days increases the production of breast milk.

Are there any long-term effects associated with taking ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) medications? If so, what are they and what medications are implicated?

Headache, insomnia, fatigue & hematological disorders are observed in such medicines but benifits outweigh side effects, rescheduling doses will take care of most side effects.

Birth weight and present diet has to be modified to give concentrated energy. Cooked at home, more oily food will not harm child. Self feeding is most important.

These are in fair range and you have to ask details with weight and feeding habits and you can ask personally so that I will see it Ferritin is an ubiquitous intracellular protein that stores iron and releases it in a controlled fashion. The protein is produced by almost all living organisms, including algae, bacteria, higher plants, and animals. In humans, it acts as a buffer against iron deficiency and iron overload. The normal range for blood ferritin is: For men, 24 to 336 nanograms per milliliter (standard units) or 24 to 336 micrograms per liter (international units) For women, 11 to 307 nanograms per milliliter (standard units) or 11 to 307 micrograms per liter (international units)

Hi I have a son of 1 year 6 month age. His tlc goes high in every 1month gap by which his fever goes high. Please suggest.

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Ranchi
Recurrent fever with high leucocyte counts at interval of every one month may be due to frequent infection. In this age 6-8 infections in a year is common as the immune system is not fully developed. But if infection is severe enough to cause hospital admission or prolong illness proper evaluation should be done. I would be better able to answer if history is provided in detail. Regards.

lybrate-user, Thanks for the query. I have seen the details and understand the concern. Unfortunately T1 DM or even T2 DM both are not curable condition. In T1 the girl has to be given Insulin injections to control blood glucose as well as for her survival. So it is essential for you to get in touch with a diabetologist who is handling T1 diabetes patient on regular basis. It is going to be quite tough to manage for a first few months. In Hyderabad I sure there are quite a few endocrinologists or diabetologist exclusively dealing with T1 diabetes kids. Please get in touch with one of those and put the girl under his/her care. Thanks.
