My question is now a days lots of people have one common problem of diabetes and it is said that if father has diabetes problem then its child will surely have that in future Is it true. If its yes then how can one must secure himself from its occurrence?

Diploma in Diabetology, P.G. Diploma in Health Science (Diabetology), Certificate Course in Evidence based Diabetes Management -, MBBS
Endocrinologist, Thane
Dear lybrate-user, diabetes is a multi factorial disorder. That means that more than one factor is responsible for developing diabetes. Many people have history of diabetes in parents or siblings but not all of them develop diabetes. Genes when combine with mental stress, sedentary lifestyle, improper diet, smoking and alcohol addiction lead to diabetes. Now prevention of diabetes is by preventing each factor. Exercise regularly, meditate as and when possible, have balanced healthy diet and avoid smoking and alcohol! prevention is better as there's no cure for diabetes till date! hope this helps you!

I am 18 years old and I have high blood pressure. My test reports are normal. What should I do?

MBBS, DNB (General Medicine)
Endocrinologist, Delhi
Having a high blood pressure will have no affect on your blood/urine test reports. Infact Blood reports like like profile (Cholesterol) are needed only to assess you further for any additional risks apart from Blood pressure. All you need to understand is this- Blood pressure is not a disease - its a tendency. Having high blood pressure exposes your body organs and internal coverings of your blood channels (arteries) to high turbulence of circulation. This effects them to undergo damage with lots of wear and tear. Hence the only objective you have is to keep your blood pressure under control. You can do this by two things - NO. 1 Cut down salt in your diet to as low as possible! NO. 2 Listen to your doctor’s advice for medicine! That’s all!

I have a desk job. My weight was less but when I started to eat fast food my weight increased. Please help me.

Your weight is controlled by 4 major factors (1) refined sugar consumption (2) exercise and hydration (3) posture and sitting (4) how many times do you indulge yourself - alcohol, binge eating at parties, overeating etc. Step 01: refined sugar 1. Avoid all snacks and commercial products with sugar in them - biscuits, cakes, bournvita, horlicks, coke, pepsi, energy drinks, sweetened yogurt etc. 2. Cut down on your daily intake of tea/coffee and maintain it at 3-4 cups a day. 3. Try to add little sugar to any beverage (coffee, tea, milk, lemon water etc.) that you have and ideally you should refrain from adding any sugar altogether. Step 02: get exercise and proper hydration 1. Try to work out for 20 minutes each day. You do not necessarily have to go to the gym. You can incorporate some pretty powerful exercises in your daily routine like - squats, skipping, surya namaskar and core exercises. 2. Drink 8-10 glasses of water everyday but remember that tea/coffee are not substitutes for pure water. Step 03: improve posture and sitting habits if you have a sitting job then ensure that you do not sit for more than 30 minutes at one stretch. Get up and move a little after every 30 minutes. Step 04: stop indulging and eat more of raw natural stuff 1. No more than 60 ml of hard liqour or 2 glasses of beer per day. 2. Try to eliminate the urge to overeat but if you do overeat try to limit the incidents to two times per week. 3. Eat 4 servings of fruits per day. 4. Each of your meal should contain 50% of raw vegetables. Once you incorporate the above points in your routine you will see a dramatic difference in your weight, physical shape and energy levels. You will find that there are a lot of companies out there that are trying to sell expensive products to naive consumers in the name of weight loss. These products may not necessarily be good for you. Losing and maintaining weight is something which is totally in your hands, it is easy and it is free of cost if you follow the above mentioned points.

I am 35 years old and have twins of 3.5 years age. I am suffering from dizziness since last 2-3 yrs. I am unable to stand, eyes didn't open. Whole body gets cold. After 20-30 minutes it gets normal. But, the body lost all the energy. Is it due to any tension or lack of water. Pls suggest the solution.

Diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO), MBBS

Get the blood tested to rule out anaemia. Thyroid function tests are also needed you seem to be sapped of the energy on account of managing the twins. It is quite a handful.

I have a dark skin. I want to be fair. What are the best medicine to get a fair and pimple clear skin?

MBBS, Diploma in Venerology & Dermatology (DVD)
Dermatologist, Delhi
Avoid too much sun exposure or use a sunscreen with spf 25-30 every time you go outside. You can try creams and soaps that contain kojic acid, glutathione, aplha-arbutin, licorice extract, mulberry extract, and Vitamins C, E, and B3. You can also go for lightening creams containing hydroquinone, but make sure that the concentration does not exceed to 2%. If you wd like to go for a more natural approach, you can try rubbing the slices of lemons, potato, tomatoes, cucumber which are also found to be beneficial in clearing the complexion. Just keep in mind, though, that the effectiveness of the treatments mentioned depends largely on your skin problem and skin type. Some products and procedures may work, but some may not. Its best to consult your dermatologist to find out which of these options is best for your skin type.
