Is it advisable to feed cerelac to your 5 months old child 2-3 times a day? And slowly reducing milk intake until she turns 1? Or it should be like solids should be a treat and milk a main course to their diet. Please help.

Hi the question is not clear. Weaning foods like cereals (cerelac) can be started from 5-6 months but preferably at 6 months. Breast feeding should continue till 2 years thanks.

Hello Doctor. My baby is just 8 months old and since last five days she is suffering from too much of cough and cold....
If it is simple cold n cough without involvement of lung i.e. URTI, for last 5 days, now there is no role of antibiotics. I think she is having blocked nose. Some time salbutamol makes the condition worst. I repeat if there is no involvement of lung infection n baby taking feed near to normal, stop all medicine just instill saline nasal drops in each nostril 3-4 times in a day and give her sips of lukewarm water now n then. Otherwise continue tt as advised by your doctor.

Hi, My baby is 3 months old he's exclusively on breastfeed and once a while I give him formula milk. I need to leave him and go for 2 nights. Is it advisable to leave and go the baby also does that affect the milk supply of the mother child breast feeding relation?

Only thing I want to add is that after refrigragion you can thaw the milk by keeping the katori in lukewarm container. And for two days you should express the milk and empty the breast whenever possible just to maintain adequate milk supplies.

Tantrums at Two

The children become very active, irritable, cranky, start having a mind of their own, suddenly become very choosy in what they want to eat or drink or want to do for that matter. Do not worry. It is normal. Now that they can walk, communicate with some words and have started moving around; they are very excited. This new found freedom is amazing for them. Be firm but do not lose your cool. Keep guiding them about what's wrong and whats right, let them explore. But yes if you are too flustered then they can be calmed down with the help of a few doses of very mild homeopathic medicines. Have a great day.

You can do mammography test and upload report, if there is no history of injury due to rough handling of breast.

My son (age 14 months) is showing crankiness all day and don't like to be alone. If left alone even for a minute, he starts crying inconsolably. Also to mention that for last 3 days he used to do potty (semi liquid type) of light yellowish color and 2-3 times a day. It is observed that his teething is on and upper lower molar teeth are protruding and 2 teeth in front are also coming. Should I give one spoon of honey everyday to smoothen his teething experience and why is he cranky all the time? Please suggest?

Again teeth eruption has nothing to do with loose stool fever etc. But its sometimes cause irritation to the child as well as parents. 2 to 3 motion a day is normal at this age. Some mouth soothing gel may be helpful. Honey is for nutritional purpose it can increase thirst and paradoxical diarrhea.

My baby is 6 month old and yesterday she had loose motion (3 times) in a day. Her other activities are normal. Is it because of her teething or some other reason. And should I give her ORS.

Nothing to worry if baby is not vomiting, and no fever. Feed her regularly. Ors could be given but make it in given proportion.

Perthes Disease In Children - What Can Possibly Lead To It?

Perthes Disease In Children - What Can Possibly Lead To It?

The hip joint is a ball and socket joint made up of the round head of thigh bone (femoral head) with the cup shaped socket (acetabulum) of the pelvis and Perthe’s Disease is an affliction of the hip joints in growing children. It is much more common in boys than girls, and occurs most commonly in children aged between 4 to 10 years. The cause of this problem is still unidentified.

In Perthes disease, changes affect the femoral head which can be seen on X-ray. These changes occur in three stages over 18 months to 2 years:

  1. The blood supply to part of the femoral head is disturbed, causing loss of bone cells.
  2. Softening and collapse of the affected bone
  3. Re-establishment of the blood supply, repair and remodeling of the femoral head.

Limping is the most common symptom. The limp may become more persistent and pain may develop. Examination of the child by the orthopaedic surgeon generally shows restriction of hip movement. The nature of Perthes disease is variable. Severity depends on the child’s age, and the extent of femoral head involvement. Older children, girls, and those with greater involvement of the femoral head are likely to require more complex treatment. Treatment aims to reduce pain and stiffness, and prevent femoral head deformity.

All children need regular review by the orthopaedic surgeon through the duration of the disease. Not all children require active treatment. Many will make a good recovery with only symptomatic treatment. This may involve restriction of activity such as running and high impact sports. Swimming is encouraged. Some children may require exercise in slings and springs, or the application of plaster casts to the lower limbs. Some children will require surgical management.

Children with Perthes Disease are otherwise healthy, but may be affected by physical restrictions. By middle age, one third of those affected have no symptoms, one third have intermittent hip pain, and one third would develop arthritis requiring treatment.
