Is there any Ayurvedic/herbal/homoeopathic (or any other pathy) treatment available in the world for permanent cure of diabetes? My elder brother's sugar level is 580/450. He has been diagnosed with diabetes first time in his life. He was a heavy drinker for more than 30 years but now he is not drinking for more than two years and free from any bad habit. His age is 47 years. Please suggest suitably.

Dear lybrate-user, one of the major nutritional substance required for human body is carbohydrate. We take carbohydrate in the form of rice, wheat, sugar etc. The complex molecules of carbohydrate are broken down into simple glucose molecules during digestion & released in the blood stream to be absorbed by the muscle cells. Insulin hormone plays a vital role in the absorption of the glucose molecules by the muscle cells. In abnormal conditions, either due to less production of insulin or due to resistance to insulin, the process of absorption of glucose by the muscles comes to a stand still. The glucose molecules remains in the bloodstream which results in the increase in the blood sugar level. This abnormal condition is clinically known as diabetes mellitus. Once a patient is diagnosed with diabetes he has to take regular medicine to keep his blood sugar level within normal limits. Your brother can take homoeopathic mother tincture gymnemna sylvestra q, 30 drops, thrice daily, after meals, in a cup of water. Also he needs to walk at least 1 hour daily without any interval. Also he needs to take a low carbohydrate rich diet & avoid rice, sweet dishes, fruits, cold drinks, fast foods, alcoholic beverages, potato etc.

Dear patient this is actually a nutritional suppplement and vitamin used to treat or prevent the medical conditions that can occur if you are deficient in these vital nutrients.  Thus, the effects of long-term use have not been studied, however, they are generally considered safe, as long as you are not taking extremely high doses.  Regards.

Mr. Lybrate-user, in case of high uric acid, it is better to avoid high purine containing foods like red meat, organ meat, certain sea foods like herring, trout, sardines, salmon, haddock, scallops, mushrooms, mussels. Can consume eggs, low fat milk products, most vegetarian foods. High potassium content is seen in bananas, mushrooms, salmon fish, avocados, baked potatoes, milk and milk products etc. Also green leafy vegetables.

Sir, I am suffering from Sugar & B. P What food can I take in morning, Afternoon and Night.
A diabetic person has to consume food like everyone else. However, total calories have to be restricted based on one's weight, sugar levels and amount of exercise done per day. You have not mentioned the sugar levels at all, secondly no info on level of physical activity. Further, you are overweight with a bmi of 27.7 kg/m2. Hence, your diet has to provide you a maximum of 1400 calories per day. I can not actually prescribe the whole diet here, but please keep in mind to avoid sweets, deep fried foods and fruits like mango, chikkoos, grapes and bananas. Consume more green vegetables and salads, whole grain flours, and eat more frequently but less quantity at a time.

Madhurikaji, Thanks for the query. TSH value 14.5 mU/L shows that there is uncontrolled hypothyroidism, which needs to be treated. Untreated it can cause multiple problems like swelling of face, lower limbs, weight gain, slow heart rate, tiredness, early fatigue, irregular menstruation, muscle and joint pains, intolerance to cold, dry skin and hair, hair loss and anxiety and depression. Therefore, start early treatment. Thanks.

What is diabetes, how we come to know about it and what precautions should we have to take to control diabetes.
Hello, diabetes is a metabolic disorder affecting carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism and both small and large blood vessels, with persistent hyperglycemia. In the long run it damages eyes (retina), nerves, kidney, heart and causing problems with lower limbs. It is caused because of either lack of insulin or resistance to its action (t2 dm) or total absence of insulin as in t1 dm. T2 diabetes is a preventable condition, by adapting modified life style one can prevent it. Modified life style means regular exercise, maintaining near normal weight, avoiding smoking and alcohol and eating a healthy diet.

What are the possible causes for increase of uric acid in blood. What are problems it can cause in the body? How it can be cured?

MBBS, CCEBDM, Diploma in Diabetology
Endocrinologist, Hubli-Dharwad
Mr. Lybrate-user, disturbance purine metabolism produces excess uric acid. Normal uric acid levels in female are 2.4 to 6 mg and in male 3.4 to 7 mg increased uric acid may be produced because derangement in purine metabolism. This is called primary uricemia. Seconday increase in uric acid may occur due to disease of kidneys, certain chemotherapeutic drugs, diabetes or acidosis can cause increase in uric acid. Elevated uric acid does not produce problem in every one, only 20% people suffer with gout. In some with gout uric acid may not be high. Gouty arthritis is the main manifestation of hyperuricemia. Gout is painful swelling of joints, great toe is first to get involved, other joints may also get affected. It is very painful condition especislly in acute attacks.
