General Physician,
I am 29 years old and I have diabetes. My Hba1c is coming 6.3 whereas FBS is 160 and PPBS is 250. My weight is 47kg. ...
Since your hba1c is near normal, it suggests that your long term sugar control is fine. What you need more importantly is strict diet plan and exercise. Take small frequent meals, avoid high sugar containing food. Take plenty of fibre rich foods. You may also be needing anti-diabetic medications suitable for your health profile. Consult for further query.

Hi Lybrate User, As per your stats, your BMI is 36.7 which falls in Obese Cl2 Category. Your frame is designed for about 65-70 Kgs which means you are carrying about 30 Kgs extra. You can imagine how your body is going to cope with 30 Kgs extra weight to carry. As for Hypothyroidism. It can contribute about max 3-4 Kgs to your weight. Beyond that the weight is due to your food habits and lifestyle. The medicine Thyroxine is already taking care of your Thyroid problem. But extra weight contributes to a host of many problems. Some which can be quantified and some which can't be quantified. Recommendation. 1. First and foremost. Please visit a dietician and get a wellness plan to get your weight down. 2. This is very very Urgent. Your excess weight is causing imbalance in your body. Due to which you feel all other symptoms. 3. Get complete body tests done to rule out other issues like Sugar, BP problems etc. 4. Start on a fitness / Yoga / Walk program immediately 5. You have to make your health a priority. Immediately. 6. Thyroid is not the problem. It is your lifestyle which needs immediate change.

Hi , we empathize with you fully! diabetes and other lifestyle disorders do crop up as an effect of an erratic eating schedule and poor lifestyle habits. There are several strategies you could employ to lower your blood sugar--a good baseline diet and some degree of physical activity being the key ones. We would be happy to work with you in greater proximity as part of one of our lifestyle intervention programs.

Lybrate-user, are you on treatment for hypothyroidism? if not then start it immediately, with thyroxine. Dose will depend upon body weight, t4 & tsh levels. Once adequate dose is taken all symptoms will be in check. Plus you also have to avoid soy beans, soy containing products, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, radish, peanuts, mustard & coffee. Consume good deal of green vegetables, salads & fruits. Use whole grain flour for chapati & roti. Avoid bakery items and items made of maida. Exercise daily for at least 1 hour. If you have any doubts please come back. J.

This report is not specific. You are clearly not hypothyroid but report is not that clearly depicts hyperthyroidism so better get it repeated after two weeks empty stomach with morning sample of blood. Your symptoms are more important to categorize whether you have any thyroid problem or not.

Diabetes - 4 Types Of Insulin Available!

Diabetes - 4 Types Of Insulin Available!

What is insulin therapy?
Insulin is a hormone that is responsible for keeping the level of sugar in the blood under control. It is the primary therapy used for the treatment of any type of diabetes. The dependence on insulin depends on the balance between the actual production of insulin in the body and the resistance of the body cells to the insulin produced. People, who suffer from diabetes type 1, need insulin injections lifelong. The requirement for insulin therapy in people suffering from type 2 diabetes solely depends upon the declining function of the beta-cells over time.

What are the types of insulin available in the market?
The various types of insulin available in the market are:

  1. Rapid acting insulin: The onset of action in this type of insulin is rapid and it lasts for a short duration, about two hours.
  2. Short acting or regular insulin: The onset of action is moderate, and it starts acting within half an hour, and the duration of action ranges from 3 to 6 hours.
  3. Intermediate acting insulin: It takes about 2 to 4 hours for the onset of action of this type of insulin and the effect can remain for about 18 hours.
  4. Long acting insulin:  The duration of action of this type of insulin can last up to about an entire day.

How is it taken?
Insulin injections can be self-injected using a syringe, a needle, a cartridge system, or a pre-filled pen system. Devices for inhaling insulin, quick-acting insulin and insulin pumps are also available at medical stores and pharmacies. Insulin is injected subcutaneously, into your muscles. Try to ensure that you inject around the same area every time, but choose a different spot to ensure less scarring. The best areas to inject insulin are thighs, buttocks, arms and belly. If you take regular insulin, it is advised to take it half an hour before a meal.

What are the possible side effects?

  1. Low blood sugar level
  2. Scars and lumps from extensive usage of insulin injection
  3. Rashes can be found in the area the insulin is injected or sometimes, all over the body
  4. Weight gain when you start using insulin initially

What causes Hashimoto's thyroiditis, and what is the best method of treatment? Can iodine help this condition?

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease, a disorder in which the immune system turns against the body's own tissues. In people with hashimoto's, the immune system attacks the thyroid. This can lead to hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid does not make enough hormones for the body's needs. There is no cure for hashimoto's, but replacing hormones with medication can regulate hormone levels and restore your normal metabolism. Yes, iodine may help.

What is the best & effective latest medicines developed for the Diabetes patient? Type 2 Diabetes Patients?

MBBS
General Physician, Cuttack
What is the best & effective latest medicines developed for the Diabetes patient? Type 2 Diabetes Patients?
There is no single medicine to control Diabetes. It depends on your blood sugar level and response to a particular type of drug. If the response is not good and diabetes is not under control differnt drug can be used. You have to regularly monitor your blood sugar, hbA1c and consult physician/endocrinologist for advice. Diet control, weight reduction is more important than medicine.

Dear lybrate user, high sugar levels are definately a cause for you to worry about your mother. Stress can be major contributing factor for high sugar levels. It appears to me that your mother is emotional kind of person. She may not sharing her feelings with anyone. But that causes tension. She needs an outlet to express her emotions. I would suggest you to take her to a counsellor who will help her to relieve of her intense feelings. Once her tension is released then she will be able to think rationally and will have lesser stress.
