How to Avoid Tooth Decay

BDS
Dentist, Navi Mumbai
How to Avoid Tooth Decay

Your mouth is the breeding place for various bacteria. These bacteria use the sugar in food and turn them into acids. These acids then react with a tooth, gradually drilling a hole in it, which is infamously known as a tooth cavity.

You might wonder why exactly this happens. When your teeth are subjected to acid frequently, the repeated acid attacks on the enamel, the enamel starts losing its minerals. The first sign of tooth decay is when a white spot appears on the tooth. This white spot is the area from where the enamel has lost its minerals. If not taken care of from the time this early sign of decay makes an appearance, then the decay just gets more serious and the white spot will turn into a cavity.

Here are some tips to avoid tooth decay altogether:

  1. Use fluoride based toothpaste and mouthwash: Fluoride prevents tooth decay from maturing. It can even reverse or stop tooth decay, which is in its early stage. It also protects the tooth from further decay and replenishes the lost minerals from the enamel and prevents any further loss. It also reduces the acid making ability of the bacteria present in the mouth.
  2. Keep a check on food: Keep a study check on what you are eating. If you eat too much of junk food or food which contains a lot of sugar regularly, then suffering from a tooth decay is inevitable. Try to limit those foods to maybe once or twice a week.
  3. Brush your teeth: Brush your teeth regularly, preferably with fluoride toothpaste. Not only will the fluoride toothpaste protect your teeth, the toothbrush will also take out any food particle stuck between two teeth.  Brush at least twice a day or preferably after every meal and before bed.
  4. Use dental floss: Clean in between your teeth with a dental floss.
  5. Eat cheese: Cheese contains casein which prevents tooth decay or cavity formation.
  6. Visit your dentist regularly: Make sure you visit your dentist regularly to keep your teeth healthy.

Overuse of anti-sensitivity toothpastes
Over and unwanted use of anti-sensitivity pastes results in masking of early symptoms of dental problems resulting in progress of disease which require higher levels of treatment, multiple sittings and added cost to patients.

Since teeth cleaning is as important for children as for adults, they should use a toothbrush which has a small round head and soft bristles. It helps in cleaning their milk teeth thoroughly.

I have bad smell from my mouth I tried many tooth pastes but no difference made. So what I can do.
Tooth pastes are just an additive to your oral hygiene measures. Rinse thoroughly after every meal. Bad smell can be for many other reasons other than your oral cavity e. G. Sinusitis, gastric disturbances, eating habits. Visit your dentist now and get it solved.

Hello, It seems ok and material should be Metapex, ask your dentist and get it checked . Dentist will analyze amount of bone formation at the apex of that teeth by taking a x-ray. All the best. Regards! Dr. Priyanshu Singh

I'm 22 year old. My problem is I have drink in ice so my teeth is pain and my Head is pain.

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist, Chennai
I'm 22 year old. My problem is I have drink in ice so my teeth is pain and my Head is pain.
The type of treatment you have for toothache /sensitivity/swelling will depend on the cause of the pain, so your dentist will examine your mouth and may carry out an X-ray to try to identify the problem. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling is caused by tooth decay, your dentist will remove the decayed area and replace it with a filling. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling is caused by a loose or broken filling, the filling will be taken out, any decay will be removed and a new filling put in place. •If the pulp inside your tooth is infected, you may need root canal treatment. This procedure involves removing the infected pulp and then inserting a special type of filling to seal the tooth and prevent re-infection. •If your toothache / sensitivity/swelling can't be treated using these methods, or if your tooth is impacted (wedged between another tooth and your jaw), it may need to be removed. Start taking a course of multivitamin capsule once daily for 1 week apply dologel ct 3-4 times a day. Avoid spicy and hot food. Start using mouthwash do dilute it with water twice daily after meals. Consult a dentist if it persists even after 1 week. Then we need to rule out the cause regards.
