Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) and its Causes

Fellowship in Laproscopic Surgery, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Ghaziabad
Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS) and its Causes

Toxic shock syndrome (TSS) is a potentially life-threatening condition that causes a steep drop in blood pressure, resulting in deprivation of oxygen to the organs, which in severe cases leads to death. This disease has been associated with menstruating women who use superabsorbent tampons. It was first recognized in the 1970s and 80s when women using tampons of certain brands were affected by this syndrome and those brands were immediately taken off the market. This disease primarily affects tampon wearers and harmful effects of cervical caps, diaphragms, and menstrual sponges have surfaced.

New mothers are susceptible to TSS as well as those who are recovering from a surgery, are wounded or are using prosthetics. It is important to know about its symptoms so that you can identify the disease and seek professional help at the earliest.

Symptoms

Warning signs of TSS include:
-Seizure
-Headaches
-Muscle aches
-Diarrhea
-High fever
-Nausea

Causes
An overgrowth of bacteria called staphylococcus aureus (staph) causes this disease. It can be found primarily in female bodies. This is one of the many staph bacteria that lead to skin infections in burn victims and patients recovering from surgical wounds. Group a streptococcus (strep) bacteria is another cause of this syndrome.

I am married since 2 years and I and my wife are planning for a baby since last 6 months but she is not conceiving and I am very about and want to know is there any way to weather the problem is with me or my wife so that we can take treatment accordingly please help.

Gynaecologist, Kolkata
What is the actual problem can only be determined if we talk to both of you, check you and then advise some tests depending on examination findings. Further treatment depends on the cause of the problem. Even when there is no cause found, we can still offer treatment with good success rate.

If you have diabetes or if you have lowered immunity you tend to have recurrent fungal infection. Also if your partner also has fungal infection and not treated you tend to have recurrent infection. Both of you get treated simultaneously. Medication can be advised only in private consultation or you get prescription from your gynaecologist.

Roti vs. Rice- What should you have your meals with?

Msc- food and nutrition
Dietitian/Nutritionist,
Roti vs. Rice- What should you have your meals with?
Roti vs. Rice- What should you have your meals with?
#12;
The nutritional conflict between rice and roti is age-old, as primary staples of every Indian cuisine. White rice and wheat chapattis are both infused with considerable amounts of protein, calorie, fat as well as fibre. This overlap makes it tougher to choose just one as an accompaniment with your meals.
The health-conscious can take a sigh of relief with this list of effective benefits of the two. Let’s pit them against each other!

#1: If you opt for a lighter meal…Choose rice!
Boiled white rice is easier to chew and digest as it is low in fibres. For those with issues of diarrhoea, colitis, an upset stomach or morning sickness, rice is a favourable choice. If you are suffering from chronic gastrointestinal distress, rice is recommended for you.
Tip- You can consume a bowl of steamed rice with sautéed vegetables for a wholesome meal!

#2: If you are looking for muscle growth…Choose roti!
Rotis is the best food accompaniment for vegan and vegetarian bodybuilders. At home, you can mix variants of whole grains to harness the benefits of calcium and other minerals. Wheat chapattis made of whole grain consist of complex carbohydrates that boost your energy.
Tip- For reducing your portions, have two servings of roti (without ghee) with a large bowl of home-cooked yellow dal.

#3: If you have a heart condition… Choose rice!
For you to keep your heart healthy, the consumption of rice is vital. Brown as well as white rice is full of fibres and high in magnesium, niacin, phosphorus that can prevent heart problems. Rice helps you in lowering bad cholesterol levels.
Tip- Substitute your regular white rice in the khichdi or biryani recipe with brown rice. (Contains fibrous bran and germ layer)

#4: If you want to feel fuller… Choose roti!
For weight watchers, who want the feeling of satiety for longer period should include rotis in their meal. Wheat rotis take longer to digest which helps in maintaining blood sugar levels. This quality also makes it a good alternative for diabetic individuals. Wheat rotis are nutritious and contain vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and B9 that help in keeping you strong.
Tip- While kneading the wheat dough for the rotis, you can add soya powder to increase its protein content.
To escape the dilemma of choosing between these two healthy and tasty staple sides, try switching to whole-wheat rotis and brown rice. Savour both, guilt-free!

I had a miscarriage at 24 weeks of pregnancy even though I hv done my cerclage at 13th week. What precautions I need to take when I conceive again, so that I can have a healthy baby?

U need to reduce weight. Also you would need another circlage operation next time around. Around 15% of pregnancies gets miscarried, that is nature's rule. You should avoid next pregnancy for 6 months from the last abortion. Chances of repeat abortion or pretem delivery increases if one becomes pregnant within 6 months of miscarriage. Also if abortion/ miscarriage was caused by any viral infection, then it will get cured automatically within 3 months time. Use contraception for 6 months. Best one to use are oral contraceptive pills. No special treatment or tests are needed if you had only one miscarriage or spontaneous abortion.

Hi my wife has faced miscarriage three months back. DNC was performed. Now the doctor has prescribed ovigyn dsr tablets. She has been taking it from last twelve days. She has also grade I fatty liver. There is continously pain in her abdomen on right side. Is it safe for her to get pregnant and why is the pain there ?

MD DGO, Laparoscopic Surgery
Integrated Medicine Specialist, Mumbai
It is extremely important to have normal thyroid levels at the time of conception. The miscarriage could be related to low thyroid. Also, the baby's brain development needs normal thyroid. Fatty liver means her 'cholesterol' level is high. So your wife has hormone imbalance, which can be treated safely by Integrative Medicine. Only after normal thyroid should she get pregnant.

My cousin has a fibroid in her uterus she delivered a baby girl who is 6 months old now the doctor advised her to get operated when the baby is of 1 year old should she get dat operated or can it get cured by medicine.

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Ludhiana
Hi, first of all I wants to clear you that 1- there in no medicine available for the treatment of fibroid uterus 2- all fibroids don't need any treatment. 3- fibroids are innocent tumors & very slow growing 4- it's size increases during pregnancy but decreases considerably after delivery, 5- small fibroids don't causes much problem. Problems with fibroids are usually due to it's size &/or location. 6- treatment is only needed if there are symptoms. Treatment is only by surgery. So ask her to get done her ultrasound lower abdomen now & send me report. I want latest report.
