My Daughter has cough and running nose and her first molar teeth coming out. She is cranking very often and drooling. Please suggest some medicine for cough and cold too. She is 14 month old.

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Jamnagar
It is not good to write drugs without seeing a patient. But you can give syp paracetamol 15 mg/kg per dose 6/4 hourly. It will reduce her bodyache and fever if it is. Will reduce her crankyness.

It is indicative of serious underlying problem. Waste no time and get it checked by a competent dentist. Gargle, rinse & spit with salt-water after meals till you get an oral checkup.

Chewing a sugarless gum after your meal for around 20 minutes freshens your breath and also make the leftover food particles cling to it.

I have bad breath even after brushing and flossing. It starts by evening. What to do?

Advanced Aesthetics, BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Hi, there are various reasons of bad breath, like impurities in blood, inefficient digestive system, dry mouth (lack of saliva production), gum disease, cavities, plaque and tartar formation around teeth and gums, kind of diet, improper brushing / cleaning of mouth etc. I would advise you to get a thorough physical and dental examination to rule out the cause of bad breath and to solve it permanently.

Sensitive Teeth

BDS
Dentist, Mumbai
Is the taste of ice cream or a sip of hot coffee sometimes a painful experience for you? Does brushing or flossing make you cry out occasionally? If so, you may have sensitive teeth.
Possible causes include:
• Tooth decay (cavities)
• Fractured teeth
• Worn fillings
• Gum disease
• Worn tooth enamel
• Exposed tooth root
In healthy teeth, a layer of enamel protects the crowns (the part above the gum line )of your teeth. Under the gum line a layer called cementum protects the tooth root. Underneath both the enamel and the cementum is dentin.
Dentin is less dense than enamel and cementum and contains microscopic tubules (small hollow tubes or canals). When dentin loses its protective covering of enamel or cementum these tubules allow heat and cold or acidic or sticky foods to reach the nerves and cells inside the tooth. Dentin may also be exposed when gums recede. The result can be hypersensitivity.
Sensitive teeth can be treated. The type of treatment will depend on what is causing the sensitivity. Your dentist may suggest one of a variety of treatments:
• Desensitizing toothpaste. This contains compounds that help block transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the nerve, and usually requires several applications before the sensitivity is reduced.
• Fluoride gel. An in-office technique which strengthens tooth enamel and reduces the transmission of sensations.
• A crown, inlay or bonding. These may be used to correct a flaw or decay that results in sensitivity.
• Surgical gum graft. If gum tissue has been lost from the root, this will protect the root and reduce sensitivity.
• Root canal. If sensitivity is severe and persistent and cannot be treated by other means, your dentist may recommend this treatment to eliminate the problem.
Proper oral hygiene is the key to preventing sensitive-tooth pain. Ask your dentist if you have any questions about your daily oral hygiene routine or concerns about tooth sensitivity.

I have a bad breathe always. Brush my teeth for 3 times a day. What should I do to avoid this bad breathe. Thank you.

Post-Graduate Certificate in Endodontics
Dentist, Cuttack
Brushing is advised only twice a day. Overbrushing might destroy your enamel and cause sensitivity. Bad breathe has several reasons. It can be because of deposits or food particles remain inbetween your teeth. Or it can be due to medical conditions like gastric reflux, diabetes, lung infection, sinusitis or medications for chest pain and all. So before treating the problem, we have to know the cause so that we can eradicate it from roots. For time being use mouthwash and go for a dental check up soon to get the treatment.

I have problem with bad breath even if go for 2 times brush also please suggest me what I can do to solve this.

BDS
Dentist, Bangalore
Bad breath can be reduced or prevented if you: - practice good oral hygiene. - brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove food debris and plaque. - don't forget to brush the tongue, too. - replace your toothbrush every 2 to 3 months or after an illness. - use floss or an interdental cleaner to remove food particles and plaque between teeth once a day. - see your dentist regularly -- at least twice a year. He or she will conduct an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning and will be able to detect and treat periodontal disease, dry mouth, or other problems that may be the cause of bad mouth odor. - drink lots of water. This will keep your mouth moist. - chewing gum (preferably sugarless) stimulates the production of saliva, which helps wash away food particles and bacteria.

You need complete scaling (professional cleaning) and polishing of your teeth. Get it done by a dentist. If there are caries (decay) in your teeth then those have to be filled by cosmetic fillings. Brush your teeth twice daily in vertical motion. Avoid doing it horizontally. Use a soft bristle toothbrush. Be gentle to your teeth while brushing.

One of my braces came off. It's the only metal that is supporting it. Is it okay if I wait for a month to fix it because I've my exams going on right now and it'd finish only after a month?

BDS

Better to visit dentist and just get it fixed. It would hardly take 15 minutes for the dentist to fix the braces.

I am Sufferings from last night and feel paid teeth since morning what we will do?

BDS
Dentist, Ajmer
Tooth pain is a symptom of decay in tooth, please visit your dentist as soon as possible. He will take an xray and determine severity of the decay. If the decay is less then he will remove the decayed part and reatore it with a filling. If the decay has reached the innermost tissue he will ask you to go for root canal treatment followed by crown placement/cap. If there is no chance of saving the tooth he will ask you to get the tooth pulled out/extracted. If you want you can consult with me privately so that I can tell you a treatment plan. I will require some x-rays and photographs of the tooth for the same. Have a nice day! keep smiling!

Can you prescribe a good toothpaste of affordable price for white teeth and red gums.

If you have red gums also I think you would first require a scaling polishing by a dentist than use good co soft tooth brush with any standard tooth paste of your choice.
