What to Expect During ACL Surgery Recovery?

What to Expect During ACL Surgery Recovery?

ACL Surgery is basically Anterior Cruciate Ligament reconstruction, which is carried out for patients suffering from damaged ligaments which can lead to stiffness, pain and decreased mobility among a host of other symptoms and ailments. This kind of surgery aims at repairing the ACL with the use of grafts taken from other parts of the patient’s body. These grafts are used to replace the damaged ligaments.

Read on to know what you can expect in the recovery phase following an ACL surgery.

  1. Rehabilitation exercises: The rehabilitation process starts right after the surgery when the patient is given muscle strengthening exercises right after being wheeled back into the room from the operation theatre. These exercises will be given to the patient by the doctor or the physiotherapist who will show the correct way to do them and what all to avoid while doing them. Also, a gradual walking program will be started where the patient will first be helped when it comes to walking indoors, and then taken outdoors to practice walking on more natural terrain. Other motions can also be introduced gradually to exercise.
  2. Crutches: The patient may be asked to use crutches for a while right after the surgery. This is usually done to ensure that the body and the knees are strong enough to support full weight carriage and bearing without putting pressure on the newly operated region. Full weight bearing usually comes about within ten days after the surgery, and until then the patient is asked to take it easy.
  3. Knee extension: In the first few weeks after the procedure, the patient will experience swelling or inflammation in the area as well as some amount of trepidation when it comes to using the knee extension. The patient will be asked to do ninety degree knee flexicons before graduating to full knee extension gradually. In this phase, right after the surgery, the patient will also be encouraged to gain back control of the quadriceps as well as patellar mobility.
  4. Swelling: In the first two to three weeks after the surgery, there will be some amount of swelling. Usually, in the first two weeks after the surgery, the focus is on controlling and preventing any undue swelling and inflammation with elevation and ice.
  5. Strength and confidence: Once the initial three to four weeks are over, the focus will shift towards strengthening the core muscles with running and jogging for short periods. This will also improve the patient’s confidence in the restructured knee.

Ensure that you have a detailed discussion with your caregiver and orthopaedic specialist so that you are mentally prepared for recovery and rehabilitation.

Patient is suffering from Spondyloarthropathy( Ankylosing Spondylitis) . It is an inflammatory disease where various joints and spine is involved causing stiffness and pain. Regarding treatment, exercise plays an important role. Make back stretching and cardiovascular exercises like walking and swimming a part of your life. This will keep your joints mobile and also prevent pain. Medicines are to be taken for prevention of disease progression. I don't have knowledge about role of Homeopathy in such conditions. You can consult a pain specialist in Kolkata at Daradia for your problem.

When muscles are torn, they have to be repaired by surgery. These muscles are called rotator cuff muscles. Supraspinatus, infraspinatus and subscapularis are main along with teres minor. Muscles are like rubber in tension. If they get torn, torn ends move away from each other and natural healing is not possible. More you delay the surgery, more difficult it becomes to repair the torn part. This surgery can be done best by well trained shoulder specialist orthopedic surgeon only. Please don't go to general physician or even orthopaedic surgeon without speciality in shoulder surgery.

Irregular periods may create leg pain. Address such issue. Irregular periods may be due to overweight, hormonal imbalance, stress, lack of physical activity, having too much of fat contents. Check for above issues and get proper advice or treatments. For vaginal infection have lemon or mosambi juices regularly, it's for you also. Follow hygienic sexual life and hygenic inner wears. Walk atleast 30 minutes per day for you both. * your weight is also seem to be more it may also create issues. Thank you bro. Wish you a health baby soon.

Knee advice. Avoid sitting cross legged. Avoid squatting- quadriceps exercises- lie straight, make a towel role and put it under the knee, press the keen against the role, hold it for 20 secs. Repeat 20 times twice a day. This will help relieve some pain. Core strengthening exercise- straight leg raised with toes turned outward, repeat 10 times, twice a day. Hams stretching- lie straight, take the leg up, pull the feet towards yourself, with a elastic tube or normal belt. Repeat 10 times, twice a day. Sports taping- stretch the tape from both ends and apply on the affected area contrast fomentation (hot and cold).

If there is no weakness or loss of sensation in legs, no involvement of bowel or bladder, then the injury is likely to be of less significance and should settle in a few weeks time by rest and appropriate medicines. Patient should also be checked by DEXA scan for bone strength, and if bone density is weak, then treatment to strengthen bones should also be started.

Hello sir, I am 35 years old. Height 5.4 around 72 kgs in weight. I was injured while working onboard a ship (fell down from metallic stairs on ship) about 8 years ago. I didn't take that much serious at that time as it was not causing much problem but condition become little bit difficult after 1 year later when I was not able to walk and climb or get down stairs and do feel as if my upper part of my body above waist is detached and falling down. So, I visited on of a orthopaedic doctor who advised for rest and few exercises. Which I have followed as per his instructions. After I undertook a mri scan which states" small broad based central protrusion of the l1-2 and l2-3 discs, indenting tje thecal sac and loss of lumbar lordosis" but my question is that sir even though it's been nearly 8 years I do sometimes feel stiffness in back, feel stiffness when I do stand up after get up from sleep while on belly and also not able to sit down for a longer duration which my work requires. When I am doing the exercises I do feel better if not I do feel some what pain which tends to be felt only for few couple of minutes later on it's normal again. So, sir I do hereby request you to help me to overcome this situation of mine.

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. I need more information from you. There are many causes of pain in lower back region. But in your case there was an injury to your back region. Also tell me on a scale of 1-10 how severe is your back pain? is it also associated with any leg pain or any other neurological symptoms like numbness, paraesthesias (electrical shock like abnormal sensations) or any weakness in limbs. Please also tell me about any associated symptoms like fever, weight loss etc. What medications you generally take and what has been your treatment history till now for existing problem. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.
