I am 19 year old, female.I have been suffering from stammering since childhood and normally with my family and other people I speak normally and hardly stutter but in public places when I am in situation such as in interviews, presentation etc I am hardly able to speak and sometimes the situation gets worse as I make faces while speaking and my stomach also squeezes. So recently I was thinking to join a public speaking and personality development programme but I am confused as will it help me to improve my stutter and overcome my fear or else I should see a speech therapist?

Hi Am sorry to hear your situation. Can understand is quite nerve wrecking n embarrassing to say the least. My dear. Every cloud has a silver lining n so has urs .as you get into trouble only when you face difficult situations. Yes you have stammering which only surfaces in anxiety provoking situations as described by u. Why not control the anxiety first. Naa rahega baans .na bajegi baansuri .if you get what I mean. Pls Google rcpsych social anxiety to know more about your condition n then see a good Psychiatrist. Yes speech therapy n public speaking courses will definitely help you but in my view it is also important to work at the root of your problem. Hope this helps. Rgds.

Stammering can be made lesser only and only by speech therapy. So you should take the help of a speech therapist. Also, i'd suggest you to visit a psychologist as confidence plays a great role in dealing with this problem. I'd suggest you to speak very slowly, word by word. Actually I have problem with my voice. I can not speck louder in some circumstances. And I am not okay with my voice.

Breathe deeply and exhale on a hisssssssing sound. Repeat 10 times. Proper breathing is the foundation for a healthy voice AND control over nervous energy that can make the voice quiver. Say “Mm-mmm (as in yummy) Mmm-hmm (like yes) ” Repeat 5 times. This develops mask resonance, which creates a clean and vibrant sound by creating a clean approximation of the cords and a resonance that will sound great and project easily. Say “Mm-mmm. Mmm-hmm.” up and down your vocal range, from low to middle to high and back again, 10 times.

Nothing is particular cause for stammering, you consult doctor to get medicine but also consult the speech therapist and evaluate your stammering then take continues speech therapy, slow your rate of speech whenever you talking someone, take a small breath to start the words, practice the relaxation and breathing exercises at home. Less your nervousness and freely mixed with your friend but you must take speech therapy, after speech therapy it will be curable.

What we have to do in CBT for psellismophobic person? Give me some stepwise idea about this.

For those who are prone to stuttering might feel embarrassment, some kind of distress as well as fear in most cases. Psellismophobia is full blown condition / phobia. Cbt is one of the best form of treatment therapy for the same. We believe that our brain can be re-wired / reprogrammed just like the our pc could be programmable. In cbt the basic principle is to looking into the thought processes that lead to negative belief and behavior pattern. We believe that these unhealthy thought processes are continue the chain reaction of thinking, acting and believing leading the behavior to continue. For example" what will happen if I stutter? I always stutter when there are people around. The cbt aims at changing these thought processes and replace them with more positive thought processes, which is called cognitive restructuring. In other words it is all about changing the way you think about something so that your perception will also change and that will help reduce the problem. The first step in cbt is to notice your recurrent thoughts which are negative. These are the thoughts that works as a trigger. And write down these thoughts on a piece of paper. You may divide the page in 3 vertical columns and write down negative thoughts in first column. Second state is rational thinking - here you refute the negative statement with rational thinking, which we all could do when not currently in a stressful situation. For example, if a negative thought is" what will happen if I slutter? rational thought could be as simple as" these people are friends" or" in a conversation what is important is my participation. And in the third column write down positive affirmation - these are positive thoughts and positive statements that you consciously repeat. For ex" I am a confident and effective speaker. This will help you improve your confidence. The bottom line behind this is that you repeat this affirmative statement often enough that they gradually become habitual thoughts. When you are naturally thinking these positive thoughts that itself will improve your performance. Along with cbt you can also use regular meditation session to help you manage your stress better and to induce calmness which helps in the process. Visualization is also very effective way to change behavior. It works as begin with the end in my. Daily you see yourself speaking confidently and maintaining your calm, confident state of being while in conversation. You may also include how you are successfully working with your fear or embarrassment by changing your thought and body posture. This will also help change your behavior. Hope this helps.

Dear lybrate-user. Don't worry. Your voice will change. Usually it changes when you enter the adolescent period. But it could take even some more years. See upto the age of 18. If no change, then approach a speech therapist. Take care.

I suffer from stammering problem since I was in 4 th standard. Sometimes it decreases to negligible and sometimes becomes very severe. I stammer on certain words only, like the words which have a combination of A with D and D with I and etc etc. Please suggest a way to get rid of my stammering or suggest a doctor with whom I can consult. Lybrate-user. I think your stammering has more to do with your confidence and self esteem, rather than words and alphabets. May be you stammer more when you think you can't handle a situation or a problem. Also it might be an issue of inferiority complex. In any case you have to work on how you think. Be your self. Do not think more of the consequences. If you think you are correct then go ahead. Do not think low of your self. Everybody is not the same. You are unique. Respect your own self. All the best.

I am fifty years old active working women. Before I can sing a song nicely. But past one year, I am not able to speak also. My voice is low and it is not clear now. What is the solution for it. I am always having curd. Do not ask me to avoid curd.

Hello, if you are saying you cannot sing properly, that would still be okay, but if you are saying you cannot speak also properly. Then it's high time you should visit an ent specialist. Once after check up is done if there is no problem. Then take up your singing issue. Till then first take care of your voice.
