Causes, symptoms and treatment of Frozen shoulder

Hello friends! I am doctor Shekhar Srivastav a senior orthopedic consultant at Sant Parmanand hospital in Delhi. Today we will discuss a very common topic that is frozen shoulder. It is commonly seen in general population, more commonly seen in middle aged persons. Though it is seen in almost all classes of people, but it is more commonly seen in people who have diabetes, thyroid problems or if they have any heart problem.
Sometimes it is also seen after trivial trauma. It usually happens because of the capsule which surrounds the shoulder joint, it becomes stiff and inelastic.

Gradually the patient starts having pain and it also reduces the movement of the shoulder joints. Initially the patient gets pain while moving the shoulder but then gradually he can also feel the pain during the rest period. Sometimes it even disturbs the sleep. The treatment includes usually exercises and medication. Now many a times we see patients going to quacks for treatment where they forcibly move the joint and this can lead to complications such as fractures or damage to muscles and ligaments inside the joints. So this should be totally avoided. The proper treatment would be to consult an orthopedic surgeon who will give you some medication and will also send you for some supervised physiotherapy.

Exercises to stretch the stiff capsules are very essential for treatment. It usually takes two to three months to get resolved. Sometimes the stiffness is too much and it may persist for months together. If it doesn't improve with medications and exercises in that case we go for surgery. The surgery in this case is not an open surgery but it’s a key hole surgery where we make small cuts like the size of a tip of a pen. So we make few cuts behind and infront of the shoulder and through these cuts we release the capsule all around the shoulder. So the patient gets his motion and pain also decreases. But this is reserved for only those patients who don’t improve with medications and exercises. The mainstay of the treatment remains medications and exercises.

So in frozen shoulders what I would like to suggest is you should take proper treatment, you shouldn't go to quacks which may cause more damage to your shoulder joint, but instead you should consult an orthopedic surgeon. For that you can visit Lybrate to find out the appropriate orthopedic surgeon for you. Thank You.

This could be due to OA knee &/Or obesity. Physiotherapy along with medicines will help. Do knee exercises. It may have to be further investigated Rule out diabetes & vit.D deficiency or any other metabolic disorder. Sleep on a hard bed with a soft bedding on it. Torn Meniscus: What You Need To Know About It?

Torn Meniscus: What You Need To Know About It?

Your knees are one of the most vulnerable parts of your bodies. In case of strenuous or vigorous activities, knees are more prone to damage and injury than the other parts. Several of the knee tissues are fairly delicate and often are easily impaired. Among the other knee tissue injuries, meniscus tears are perhaps the most frequent. Meniscus is essentially a cartilage that protects and stabilizes the knee joints. However, an untoward twist or a strain can lead to a tear in the meniscus. Meniscus tears are a common phenomenon among athletes and sportsmen. They have been noted to be more recurrent in older individuals.

Some of the early symptoms that indicate the onset of a meniscus tear are swelling and difficulty in bending or straightening of the leg. Sometimes a "locking sensation" in the knees also forebodes a torn meniscus. The inflammation potentially causes a lot of pain and irritation. While, it is fairly easy to ignore a meniscus tear for a normal knee injury, prolonged overlooking may only aggravate the pain and worsen the condition. The process of diagnosing a meniscus tear usually involves an MRI scan and an X-ray examination, over and above a detailed evaluation of the wound.

Treating meniscus tears vary according to the extent of the injury. Depending upon the location and the depth of the tear, various cures can be tried. The healing process, however, depends upon other allied factors such as age, level of physical activities and one's medical history. An external and minor injury is easily mendable. Whereas, graver injuries are resolved through surgical means. The other non-operative means include certain prescribed medicines and specific exercises. Some of the recommended ways of battling a meniscus tear can be enlisted as:

  1. Resting the knee by limiting the activities that involve excessive use of the legs or they may potentially strain the leg muscles.
  2. Applying ice pack can significantly bring relief to the swelling and the pain in the injured knee. Doctors advice regular use for a duration of at least 15 days.
  3. Compressing the knee using an elastic bandage or neoprene sleeve reduces the swelling in the knee.
  4. Prescribed medicines in the likes of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be effective remedies for a meniscus tear. However, one must mandatorily consult a doctor before consuming such medicines.

First of all check your posture when you are lifting any material like heavy bucket. And try to lift the heavy bucket without bending your back. You may lift the bucket after bending your knees only. This will definitely help you. * gentle massage with lukewarm mustard oil of your waist area will also give you relief. * surya namaskar is only exercise which you need to do. * in diet vegetable protein of cereal, b complex supplements and half teaspoon of haldi in a cup of milk for seven days will give you enough relief.

Hello, thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. You will have to elaborate your problem as to a detailed discussion of your neck pain which means duration of pain and mode of onset. You have mentioned that your fingers get numb occasionally and you are also a diabetic. We will have to actually see whether this numbness is due to your long standing diabetes or spine issue. My advice for you will be: - to get a detailed neurological examination (both motor and sensory done for yourself) so that I can understand whether there is any compression at neck region - please send me your x rays and mri cervical spine region - you should continue with anti inflammatory medications, adequate sugar control, medications for neuropathic symptoms like pregabalin and/or gabapentin, vitamin b12 supplementation, adequate calcium and vitamin d supplementation etc. Once I have investigation reports with me, I will be able to advise you in a better manner. Please also tell me about any associated symptoms like fever, weight loss etc. What medications you generally take and what has been your treatment history till now for existing problem. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.
