Neonatal hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver that occurs in early infancy, usually one to two months after birth. About 20 per cent of infants who develop neonatal hepatitis were infected with a virus causing inflammation of the liver either before birth through their mother, or shortly after birth. Viruses which can cause neonatal hepatitis in infants include cytomegalovirus, rubella (measles), and hepatitis A, B and C. In the remaining 80 per cent of affected infants, no specific cause can be identified, but many experts suspect a virus is to blame. There is no specific treatment for neonatal hepatitis. Vitamin supplements are usually prescribed and many infants are given medications which improve bile flow. Formulas containing fats more easily digested by the body are also given. It will take 2 months to cure fully

Hi my baby 7 months old. She suffering every month loose motion. Please suggest how can control this.

MBBS DCH
Pediatrician, Gandhinagar
Don't give any medicines if your baby is gaining weight properly. Avoid bottle feeding. Start pomegranate and apple juice in small amount. Frequency of slightly watery stool is not a disease if child is growing well.

It must be nasl block only or early viral rhinitis. But you keep his nose clean by using a soft bud.

Please don't give any medication for sleep. It takes one year for babies to adjust to the circadian rhythm. Ensure she is not hungry. And not having any issue like colic. Or any kind of discomfort. Make her play throughout the day. And she will surely sleep.

General Physician,
If he was standing for a long time as in assembly at school it can be orthostatic hypotension. If he at times sit and look blank/ vacant look we have to look for absence attack type of epilepsy. Ask me with all details privately.

As pulmonary pressure is normal there is nothing to fear and foramen ovale usually will close or surgery may needed. If you can upload the full report to me it is better to give you a better idea.

Best Ways to Deal With Tonsillitis in Kids

Best Ways to Deal With Tonsillitis in Kids

Tonsillitis, in the easiest terms, is the swelling of tonsils in our throat that is accompanied by symptoms like throat pain, difficulty in swallowing/ drinking, altered voice and fever etc.

As in the case of most infections, the occurrence of tonsillitis is more common in children due to relatively lower immunity and habits that invite infections. Let's take a look at the first line of defence when you have a cranky child with swollen tonsils.

1. Make your child gargle with salty warm water: This treatment is most helpful in any infection in the mouth. Add half teaspoonful of salt to a glass of warm water and make the child gargle with the mixture as many times in the day as possible (to a maximum of 5 times). Continue till the condition prevails.

Make sure the child spits out the water and not drinks it.

2. Antibiotics: Consult the ent specialist and have the antibiotics if it is a bacterial cause as per the doctor. Take the alternative treatment prescribed in case of other causes. The entire course of medication should be completed even if the kid gets better sooner to eliminate all traces of bacteria.

3. Painkiller/numbing lozenges: Painkillers that are prescribed by the doctor can be given to ease the pain. Same is the case with lozenges but care should be taken that he/she should not have too many of these.

4. Allow him/her to take rest: It does help in a betterment of the condition!

5. Give warm (not hot) soothing food: Soup, ginger honey mixture, ginger tea can help soothe the inflamed tonsils in most cases. The condition, more often than not, gets better within 7-10 days.

If your baby is exclusively breastfed, it doesn't matter if he does not pass stool everyday. Some breastfed babies go without passing stools for a week, but it is perfectly normal provided they are exclusively breastfed.

If baby sleeps whole day, breast feed him about every 2-3 hourly in day time then probably baby shall not cry whole night and shall be satisfied in night with intermittent feeding too. This shall keep him calm in night as he shall not be hungry and sleep well. Take care of his comfort too. Cry in night is due to not satisfactory feeding in day time and may be wet.
