My sister is pregnant, what are tips that she would follow to give birth to active, brilliant, color baby.

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Ludhiana
Hi, character of baby depends on genes he/she get from parents but whatever mother eats & does also affects her baby. So mother must take care of her health both physical as well as mental. She must have healthy diet, sound sleep, stress free life, a disciplined cheerful life, do regular light exercise and meditation so har child will devlop good habits in the womb. Also she should take prenatal medicaction prescribed by her doctor, these are a great help for baby's development.

My friend has recently got married so she is very afraid of participating in sex. What are the things to follow for 1st time participation in sex and what will be the result after participating in sex?

PG Dip(psycosexual diseases), MBBS
Sexologist, Delhi
If this is arranged marriage try to dissuade your husband to do sex on first night. If he does not agree convince him and take about 3 to 5 days to know each other body and go for first insertion very slowly, dont worry or follow about blood myth from vagina on suhaagraat. For exentsive suggestion come on lybrate private forum.

7 Ways Sleep Deprivation Harms Your Sexual Health

MBBS, MD, PGD-USG ,PGDS(SEXUAL MEDICINE
Sexologist, Delhi
7 Ways Sleep Deprivation Harms Your Sexual Health

Many men claim to get by on 4 to 5 hours of sleep a day, but robbing the body of its required sleep has a number of side effects. The human body requires a minimum of 8 hours of sleep a day. There are two main reasons men don't get enough sleep: intentionally staying awake late at night and sleep disorders, such as insomnia, sleep apnea etc.

Here's how depriving your body of sleep can harm your sexual health:

  1. Less testosterone: The male body produces testosterone while he sleeps. When the body does not get adequate sleep and rest, it produces less testosterone. As the insomnia continues, this situation worsens. This leads to a low sex drive and poor libido.
  2. Low self esteem: Testosterone also influences the way the body stores fat and hence less testosterone can also lead to gynecomastia. This is condition where male bodies develop breasts as a result of an increase in body fat. Lowered testosterone levels in a male body also lead to reduced muscle strength and hence an overall lower sense of well-being.
  3. Erectile dysfunction: Inadequate sleep can result in obstructive sleep apnea. This is linked to the lowered levels of testosterone in the body as patients with sleep apnea do not reach the stage of REM sleep when testosterone is produced. Thus, sleep apnea can lead to erectile dysfunction where a man is unable to get or maintain an erection while having sex.
  4. Low sperm count: Testosterone plays an important role in sperm production. The relation between the two is simple: the higher the testosterone levels; the more the body produces sperm. Thus, if you do not get adequate sleep, your sperm count can be affected leading to infertility.
  5. Sexual misunderstanding: Sleep deprivation can affect your decision making and understanding of the other person's intentions. Thus, if you haven't slept properly, you are more likely to make uncalled for sexual advances and misunderstand your partner's sexual expectations.
  6. Accelerates aging: The body sheds dead cells and grows new cells while it sleeps. Thus, if the body is deprived of adequate sleep, the gaining process is accelerated. Not only does this bring on an early onset of wrinkles but it also lowers your sexual drive. Lowered testosterone may also lead to early balding.
  7. Fatigue: If the body doesn't get its required rest, you start the day feeling tired instead of refreshed. As the day goes on, this tiredness increases and is accompanied by irritability and aggression. When you're in such a bad moon and constantly tired the chances of wanting to be physically intimate with another person decrease.

I am unable to have sex with my husband. Each time he tries the insertion, I move him away because of the pain. This ultimately leads to a fight. Please help me. How should I prepare myself and avoid the pain?

Don't fight. Sometimes pain is due to fear, but sometimes due to some diseases like endometriosis or infection. I usually treat these patients by check up and counseling.

Hello, progynova and estrogen gel will not stop menses if it has to come. Their role is in ovulation alone and not related to menses. If there is no success after embryo transfer, then menses shall arise. You would have been placed on progesterone support after the transfer which should help in supporting the embryos.

Long term use of painkillers can cause kidney cancer

C.S.C, D.C.H, M.B.B.S
General Physician,
Long term use of painkillers can cause kidney cancer
A study published in the journal Archives of Internal Medicine has shown that people who regularly take painkiller drugs like ibuprofen or naproxen are 51 percent more likely to develop kidney cancer. There is no increased risk from taking aspirin or paracetamol. The mechanism through which painkillers could cause kidney disease is the inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis with resulting papillary and tubular injury, and ultimately damage to DNA.

The study analyzed data from 77,525 women in the Nurses’ Health Study and from 49,403 men in the Health Professionals Follow–up Study. The risk was related to the duration of use of the painkillers. There was a decrease in the risk by 19% if the painkiller was used for less than four years. There was a 36 per cent increase in risk of kidney cancer for people who used them regularly for 4 to 10 years. The risk increased almost three times for those who used these drugs regularly for 10 years or more.

The good news is that kidney cancer is uncommon so the risk is small for average users.

Two other important causes of kidney cancer are obesity and smoking. So people on painkillers should not smoke and should also keep their weight under control to prevent kidney cancer.

My wife is 5'3" and weigh 86 kg. We want to conceive but with this weight is there any health issues in it? also which days are high for conceiving after her period days?

MBBS, MD Obs & Gynae, FNB Reproductive Medicine

High weight is a health risk as there are more chances of developing diabetes and hypertension during pregnancy. if cycles are regular from 28 to 30 days, day 12 to day 16 are highly fertile.

Hi , excessive bleeding during periods is usually due to hormonal imbalance at this age but some time a fibroid or polyp may be responsible so get done -- 1 - ultrasound lower abdomen 2 - blood test for haemoglobin estimation, blood counts, tsh level, 3 - your last menstrual period date 4 - if any contraceptive method you are using please send me all information so I can advise you best possible.

I assume you mean fibroadenoma. They are not harmful and can be treated with medicines depending on the size.
