I have teeth sensitivity from a week, what should I do?

MDS - Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Dentist,
I have teeth sensitivity from a week, what should I do?
A major cause of tooth sensitivity is root exposure. Kindly consult a dentist in person for further suggestion. We need more investigations (full mouth x-ray) to decide upon treatment. You may need cleaning along with desensitizing procedures and / or artificial enamel filling. Advance procedures can be done with laser too. You may consult me in person. Until then apply a desensitizing paste (sensodyne tooth paste) on the teeth. Wait for 10 to 15 min until you brush your teeth with the same paste. Applying it overnight will be better. Dental tips: - visit a dentist every six months for cleaning and a thorough dental check-up. Limit sugary food to avoid tooth decay. Gargle your mouth thoroughly after every meal. Scrub gently to clean your tongue with a tongue cleaner. Floss all your teeth inter dentally & brush twice daily, morning & night, up & down short vertical strokes, with ultra-soft bristles, indicator brush.

Know Everything About Tooth Extraction

Know Everything About Tooth Extraction

A healthy set of teeth is essential for good living. However, teeth problems are widespread and you are susceptible to it at any age, at any time. Though there are medications available for tooth problems, sometimes extraction of the tooth remains the only plausible solution.

You may have to undergo tooth extraction for multiple reasons. Some of them are:

  1. Unaligned teeth: In case you are suffering from unaligned teeth, chances are that you may suffer from what in technical terms is known as "crowded mouth." In such a situation you have difficulty in eating as there is not enough room for the teeth in the mouth. Extraction of tooth, in this case, is the only way to rectify it and align the teeth in a better fashion.
  2. Infection: Sometimes if you suffer from a tooth infection, it tends to quickly spread to the pulp, affecting and damaging the blood vessels and different nerves. Though medications are available, if the intensity of the infection increases, extraction of tooth remains the only option.

Procedure: There are different steps that are involved in the extraction of teeth. They are:

  1. Local anesthesia: Like all other surgeries, administering a local anesthesia is the first step. If you are undergoing a tooth extraction, the dentist or the surgeon will inject anesthesia that will create numbness and soothe you of the ensuing pain.
  2. Cutting away gum and bone tissues: After the anesthesia, the dentist will proceed to extract the infected tooth. In order to do this, the doctor cuts away the gum and the tissues covering the tooth. After the root of the infected tooth has been exposed, the dentist would then with the help of forceps, sever it from the jaw.

After the surgery, you must observe certain precautions to expedite the recovery process. Some of them are:

  1. Take painkillers: After the tooth extraction, the possibility of suffering from an ensuing pain is incredibly high. Therefore, in most cases the dentist prescribes certain painkillers and you must take them regularly.
  2. Change the dressing: The operated area will be covered with bandages to preclude any infection. However, the dressing must be changed from time to time. If the same dressing remains for a long time, chances of an infection increase.
  3. Complete rest: After the extraction, you must take complete rest and not engage in any form of physical activity.
  4. Avoid certain foods: Just after the surgery, the operated area remains tender. Therefore, you must eat food that requires less effort to chew like soup, pudding, ice cream etc. You must also abstain from smoking and drinking for some time.

Hi, there are various reasons of bad breath, like impurities in blood, inefficient digestive system, dry mouth (lack of saliva production), gum disease, cavities, plaque and tartar formation around teeth and gums, kind of diet, improper brushing / cleaning of mouth etc. I would advise you to get a thorough physical and dental examination to rule out the cause of bad breath and to solve it permanently.

5 Home Remedies to Correct Yellow Teeth

5 Home Remedies to Correct Yellow Teeth

A sparkling set of shiny white teeth can make a smile more appealing and infectious. Yellow teeth can be extremely embarrassing and annoying. The important dental tissues that make up a tooth include the Enamel, Dentin, Cementum and the Pulp, of these four tissues, the enamel (the white and hard teeth surface) and the dentin (pale brown) are responsible for the tooth colour. Any damage to these two tissues bring about teeth discolouration and factors that contribute significantly towards yellowing of teeth include:

  1. Poor dental care and hygiene like improper and inadequate flossing and brushing techniques.
  2. Unhealthy lifestyle habits like chewing of tobacco and betel nuts, smoking, excessive consumption of alcohol, tea and coffee.
  3. Certain medical conditions and treatments (chemotherapy and radiation) can adversely affect the dentin and the enamel. Antihistamines are also known to stain the teeth. It is best to avoid mouth washes containing Cetylpyridinium Chloride.
  4. With age, the enamel tends to thin naturally exposing the dentin that lies underneath it.
  5. Fluoride intake in excess can stain and discolour the teeth.
  6. Yellow or discoloured teeth can also be genetic.

Yellow teeth, though frustrating, can be fully treated. The mode and success of the treatment is largely influenced by the extent of the teeth discolouration.

  1. Avoid smoking and chewing of tobacco as much as possible. Control the intake of drinks and foods that can stain and discolour your teeth.
  2. Practice healthy dental hygiene. Brush your teeth twice daily.
  3. Some whitening agents (over-the-counter) can be effectively used to treat yellow teeth.
  4. Dental veneers are a great way to deal with yellow teeth.
  5. For a healthy set of white teeth with pearly shine, visit your dentist every six months.

In addition, several natural and homemade remedies can also prove to be beneficial

  1. Nothing can treat yellow teeth more effectively than baking soda. Brushing your teeth with toothpaste mixed with baking soda (about a quarter teaspoon) can do the yellow teeth a world of good. Using a mixture of baking soda with vinegar (white), lemon juice and hydrogen peroxide is an effective natural remedy.
  2. A healthy practice to get rid of yellow teeth is to rub the teeth with orange peel every night.
  3. Rubbing the teeth with Strawberry paste will help to reduce the yellow stain greatly.
  4. The benefits of lemon are known to all. Brush your teeth with a mixture of lemon juice and salt. Wash it off after a few minutes and the yellow tinge will be a thing of the past.
  5. Charcoal, Apples and Basil leaves are powerful natural ingredients to treat yellow teeth.

Your smile is precious! Do not lose it to yellow teeth.

After the tongue tie is diagnosed it is a simple surgical procedure if we do with dental lasers. Later you would require the help of a speech therapist who will help in pronunciation. Kindly consult.

I have problem of bad breath. I tried many ways to avoid it but cant. How can I avoid it? Please help me.

Bad breadth occurs due to many reasons. In most cases, it is due to plaque or calculus over your teeth. You should check if there is any yellowish or grayish layers around the teeth especially near gum area. For the proper diagnosis of the reason, you should consult a dentist near by and take a deep cleaning of your teeth, it should be done at least once per year. However there may be some other reasons for bad breath. Brush twice properly, use mouthwash, properly clean your tongue, gargling after eating especially after eating sticky or sugary food or drinks will help you reducing it, but to get it diagnosed the proper reason for bad breath is necessary and for that consult a nearby dentist.

I have a different type of problem in teeth. Actually i went through cleaning of teeth by a intern dentist 3 mnths ago. Problem is severe cold and some sensations in teeth. When it came in contact with air,it felt actually.

MDS - Periodontics
Dentist, Yamunanagar
Dear , The sensitivity to cold is a common problem after tooth cleaning. It is not due to the procedure but due to the exposure of the sensitive part of tooth (Root), which takes place after the removal of calculus (Tartar in common language). Anyhow lets treat it. Buy Colgate Sensitive Pro Relief or Sensodyne or Sensodent KF or Thermoseal RA (either of them) toothpaste. Apply the paste, with the help of finger, to the outer and inner surfaces of teeth (especially in the teeth with sensitivity) and let it be there for 15- 20 minutes. Then take your toothbrush, wet. As paste is already there in mouth, brush your teeth with very soft hand. It is just like everyday brushing, only difference being that you have apply the paste for some time before you brush your teeth. As the paste already there, no need of applying paste to the brush. It will take almost three to 4 weeks, for the sensitivity to completely subside. It can subside early also, but if doesn't wait for 4 weeks. If you don't get relief upto 4 weeks, then go to a Periodontist. Now I will come to the harder part. In your case, I feel Periodontitis (Pyorrhea) has set in.As a result only scaling (cleaning of teeth) won't suffice. You have to seek the opinion of a Periodontist (Gum specialist) is definitely required. The reason being Pyorrhea being a very slow destruction of bone supporting your teeth, you will realize the actual difficulty when no or minimal bone will be left and your teeth becoming loose. At that stage saving your natural teeth will not be possible or in a compromised state. On the other hand if you undergo complete treatment, and follow the instructions properly then, you will never loose your teeth. Just make sure you consult a Periodontist. Till the Good Luck and Good Bye.
