Health Tip - Joint Pain

PGDHHM, MBBS
General Physician, Delhi
Health Tip - Joint Pain
Active movements are golden rule of joint health: the more you move, the less stiffness you'll have.

I had a miscarriage in Oct 2015. Trying since February 2016 again. This cycle I took Siphene 100 mg and was on follicular testing. Ovulation was proper. I also took duphaston twice a day for 14 days. I had developed a dry cough since a week and cough very violently at night. I can feel the pressure in my pelvic region. Could this affect chances of conception and implantation?

Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Bangalore
Dear Lybrate user, Coughing, usually will not affect chances of conception and implantation. However, in case you are taking medications for the same, that may adversely affect the conceptus.

I have 28 days menstrual cycle . I want to know that in which time I am safe for unprotected sex. Or what is my safety time.

DGO, MD, MRCOG, CCST, Accredation in Colposcopy
Gynaecologist, Kolkata
Best is to use a regular contraception. But time upto 7-9 days after your periods starts is safest .For a regular 28 day cycle you are expected to ovulate mid-cycle

My wife is pregnant since last 6 weeks and ultrasound report says single intrauterine pregnancy of about 6 weeks 4 days gestational age without cardiac activity then what can I do please suggest me as soon as possible.

M.B.B.S, Post Graduate Diploma In Maternal & Child Health
Gynaecologist, Bokaro
I would suggest that you wait for another week and get the USG repeated at another centre. Do not take any hasty decision. There may be some confusion of the last menstrual date. All the best.

I have asked a question about if a women took ipill after sex and that is within span of two hours, as per the info she would not conceive or get pregnant. However, what if she is not getting periods on date, is it the sign of getting pregnant or what. I have received mixed answers from different doctors, I would request you all, please answer in such a way, that would be helpful not confusing. Thanks.

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Agra
Helo lybrate-user you seem to be really confused if she has taken pill within 2 hrs then it is very unlikely that she ll concieve she may have untimely bleeding afte taking pill. But it had nothing to do with irregular cycles. Lady can have irregular cycles due to other gynaecological disorders like pco. Irregular cycles dosent mean that she is pregnant.

I had intercourse around 8-10 times in last 4 days. Yesterday night I had intercourse and after that I am getting unbearable pain while urinating. I am getting immense pain while passing urine through vagina. While urinating initially I don't get pain but later I do go through immense pain. I never experienced such pain before. What this can be?

BHMS, MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Vijayawada
This could be mild urethritis. You can take homeopathic remedy. Can notharis 30 5 pills every 4 hourly for 4 times. Thus will get cured. By the way. Take a break for few days. You know what I mean.

Difference Between Masturbation and Sex with Female Partner

M.Ch - Urology, MS, MBBS
Urologist, Dehradun
Difference Between Masturbation and Sex with Female Partner

Masturbation is normal habit for all healthy adolescent males. It is neither harmful nor has any side effects. However the aim of masturbation is to attain a climax through ejaculation which can occur in a couple of minutes.

While having sex with a partner your aim is not only ejaculation. Your aim is to give pleasure to your partner and satisfy her by all means including oral sex. Actual sexual intercourse should be the last. So the two situations are different. What happens during masturbation does not necessarily happen during heterosexual sex.

Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

MICOG, MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MBBS
Gynaecologist, Gurgaon
Abnormal Uterine Bleeding

Abnormal uterine bleeding, formerly known as dysfunctional uterine bleeding, is vaginal bleeding that cannot be related to pelvic injuries, miscarriage, pregnancy or menstrual cycle.

Symptoms:

  1. The cycle changes and the bleeding become heavier.

  2. Bleeding lasts for 7 days or more.

  3. A tender or dry vagina.

  4. Abnormal mood swings.

  5. Hot flashes.

  6. Nausea.

  7. Excessive body hair, especially on the back, chest and face.

Causes:

  1. The ovaries do not release an egg.

  2. Changes in the hormone level.

  3. Lower levels of oestrogen or progesterone.

  4. Thickening of the uterine wall in women above 40 years of age.

  5. Certain birth control pills can also cause abnormal bleeding.

  6. Some women also complain of abnormal bleeding in their first few weeks of pregnancy.

Diagnostic Procedure:

  1. The physician first checks the haemoglobin levels of the woman.

  2. An ultrasound of the pelvic region is done to check for physical injuries.

  3. Sometimes, an endometrial biopsy (the doctor checks a sample of the endometrium, which is the lining of the uterus) is also used to test the condition of the uterine lining.

  4. Hysteroscopy, using a hysteroscope, is used to test the insides of the uterus. A hysteroscope is a thin tube that is inserted into the vagina for the examination of cervix as well as the insides of the uterus.

Treatment:

  1. Younger women in the range of 18-23 years of age are usually treated using low doses of birth control pills.

  2. Oestrogen therapy is used.

  3. Painkillers such as ibuprofen are also prescribed before the beginning of the menstrual periods.

  4. The increase of ‘progesterone’ through IUD. An IUD (intrauterine device) is a contraceptive device that is inserted into the uterus.

  5. Cyclic hormone therapy is given to women above 40 years of age (Progesterone is administered in a periodic interval, usually about 4 weeks).

  6. Women considering pregnancy are recommended hormone therapy to increase ovulation.

  7. Anaemic women are given iron supplements.

MD-Ayurveda, Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Sexologist, Haldwani
Hello- the most fertile period for pregnancy is the 14th days prior to the next menstrual cycle (if the cycle is fixed). Three days prior to and later to, that is 11th to 17th day before your next menses have maximum chances for the pregnancy.
