What should I do for a baby who has a dyslexia problem? Please suggest me a treatment.

M.Sc - Applied Psychology, Advanced diploma in counselling psychology
Psychologist, Mumbai
Now a days there are many ways to deal dyslexia. (1) first, we have to confirm its dyslexia, because sometimes at this age it is normal that some children may be slow to pick up but later they caught up. (2) if confirmed that the child has dyslexia then you can go for learning disability certificate. (3) then you can go for remedial teaching which takes care of such children.

My 7 month old baby girl has viral fever and is under paracetamol drops medication. I got her urine routine test done which shows 20-40 WBC/hpf and positive leucocyte esterase. Does this mean that she has UTI or it could be because she already has viral infection.

More then 10 wbcs are suggestive of urine infection. You must start antibiotics immediately after giving early morning urine sample for culture and sensitivity test report of which you will be getting after 48 hours and you must change the antibiotics according to that.

Bed Wetting in Children - Know Ayurveda Can Help!

Bed Wetting in Children - Know Ayurveda Can Help!

Is bedwetting a regular feature in your child? Has this been continuing for a long time and is making you concerned? Nocturnal enuresis is the condition in which a child passes urine when he sleeps at night, unknowingly. It is referred to as bedwetting or nightwetting in Ayurveda. Shayyamutra is the Ayurvedic name of this condition in which shayya refers to sleeping, and mutra means urine.

Ayurvedic guidelines and remedies

  1. You must ensure that your child is getting sufficient sleep. A proper sleep schedule will make it easier for him to wake up when his bladder is full and he needs to urinate.
  2. The bowel must be kept clear to prevent thread worms from troubling at night. They account for being an important cause for bedwetting.
  3. Your child should abstain from food items such as green gram, potato, tea, chocolates, coffee, and spicy foods producing gas.
  4. You must make sure that your child does not drink any liquid right before going to sleep. On the contrary, his bladder should be emptied before going to bed.
  5. Bladder stretching exercises should be undertaken, which are effective for the management of bedwetting in children.
  6. In children who experience bedwetting in spite of being grown up, the reason is usually stress. Stress may occur from various causes and it is important to bring your child’s stress under control. For this, he should undertake yoga, mindful meditation, and other relaxation techniques.

There are various Ayurvedic home remedies, which are ideal for managing bedwetting in children. Some of them are as follows:

  1. Fry one spoon of coriander seeds until it turns brown. Mix one teaspoon each of sesame seeds, babul gum, and pomegranate flowers and make a fine powder out of the ingredients. Add crystal sugar to the mixture and give this to your child before bedtime regularly.
  2. Give half a cup of milk and Sarshapa in a powdered state to your child before he/she goes to sleep at night.
  3. Ayurvedic remedies used for curing bedwetting in children aim at strengthening your nervous system and your urinary tract. Vishatinduka vati, Chandraprabha vati, and Shilajitwaadi vati are common Ayurvedic medicines used for treating bedwetting.
  4. Deworming should be carried out for the infestation of intestinal worms, which may provide relief to your child.
  5. Several medicinal herbs are also used for the Ayurvedic treatment of bedwetting. They include bimbi, kataka, amalaki, hareetaki, haridra, khadira, and a lot more.

My child is 4 years & 8 month old boy his weight 15 kg, height is approximately 3 feet 6 inch he don't want to eat anything excepts milk we are giving - pediasure 2-3 times and he love to drink only milk 3-4 times in a day he is very thin and I am always worried his health request to you please guide me. Thanking you

M.D.( Pediatrics), DCH
Pediatrician,
It is an art than science to teach children eat healthy food. Take him along with you when you take your meals. Let him see how and what you eat. Don't scold in order to follow quickly. He will learn by watching you, parents are role model to children. They will behave the same way you behave. Love them, understand them, they have mind of their own. You also know how difficult is our mind to control. So more difficult will be for child. But love will ultimately triumph all. Have patience and work honestly to raise child. It is definitely not easy in an instant era.

Suffering from Chronic Cough - How to Manage it?

Suffering from Chronic Cough - How to Manage it?

Coughing is a common problem of the respiratory tract and often indicates a deeper problem. It can be very irritating and can affect eating habits and socialization. A cough which persists for more than 4 weeks is believed to be chronic in nature. Tuberculosis (TB) is the most common cause of chronic cough in India. TB is an airborne bacterial infection caused by the organism, 'Mycobacterium tuberculosis', that primarily affects the lungs, although other organs and tissues may be involved. Cardinal features are:

  1. Chronic cough with or without sputum.
  2. Fever more in the night time.
  3. Poor appetite.
  4. Unintentional weight loss

Read on to know about other common causes of chronic cough and how to manage them.

  1. Allergies: People with allergies usually have a chronic cough, which gets aggravated when exposed to the allergens such as pollen or environmental dust. Staying away from allergen provides relief. Antihistamines are also useful, which most people detected with allergies keep in handy. Inhalers might be required, if there is associated congestion or shortness of breath.
  2. Asthma: This is a very common chronic condition, caused by inflammation and swelling of the lungs, in addition to wheezing and shortness of breath. Asthma patients often suffer from a chronic cough. An asthma attack usually happens during the night or early morning, and is triggered by colds, cigarette smoke, air pollutants or allergens, which can even include certain foods. Most asthmatics usually carry their steroids, inhalers, and bronchodilators, as the onset of attack can be unpredictable.
  3. Bronchitis: This condition of inflammation of the bronchial region is very common among smokers and among the elderly. There is excessive mucus accumulation, which the body tries to clear via coughing. The lungs are weakened and therefore, the coughing is painful.
  4. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): This is a problem of the digestive system, but regurgitation of food into the airway induces cough. GERD is a chronic issue and so most people also end up with a chronic cough. It is worse with sitting up than with sitting down. Treatment includes H2 blockers to suppress acid production and dietary changes including small, frequent meals and avoiding spicy food items.
  5. Upper airway cough syndrome: There could be multiple problems in the upper airway, which leads to a constant postnasal drip. Here, there is constant dripping of the sputum into the air passage, which can lead to a chronic cough whenever there is impaired air flow. This can be caused by various forms of chronic sinusitis and rhinitis. People diagnosed with this condition usually resort to antihistamines and decongestants for relief.
  6. Other causes: There are a number of other causes as noted below. Smoking, tuberculosis, congestive heart failure, pertussis or whooping cough, foreign body in the airway, cancer in the airway passage, chronic aspiration of foods, etc. can all lead to chronic cough.

The key is to identify the reason that is causing the chronic cough. Most people who are diagnosed are educated to handle it and carry the required medications including steroids, bronchodilators, and inhalers. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a doctor and ask a free question.
