IUI Vs IVF - Understand the Difference!

IUI Vs IVF - Understand the Difference!

Infertility is an issue that arises when a couple is not able to conceive even after having intercourse without protection for a period of up to or beyond 12 months. This problem can be in the male or female or in both partners. While there are many kinds of treatment methods that can be used to treat and manage infertility to help a couple conceive naturally, there are also many instances where the couple may have to go in for other semi invasive methods that can be used in extreme cases. Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) and In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) are two methods that are used in such cases. Let us understand both the methods and the difference between the two.

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI):  It is a process wherein the woman’s womb is injected with motile sperm. This method is done in keeping with the ovulation cycle of the woman, and it may be conducted a few times in the days, right after the ovulation starts. The process of ovulation is usually diagnosed by a doctor and the insemination process is timed accordingly.

In vitro Fertilization (IVF): It is a process that is slightly more complex than IUI. It is one of the most successful methods that is in use for couples who have tried every other kind of treatment for infertility. In this process, the eggs are retrieved from the ovary and then harvested. This is done with the help of a process of stimulation of the ovaries. The fertilization of the eggs happens in a lab.

Insemination process: While the motile sperm is injected in the woman’s womb during the process of IUI, in IVF, the process is slightly different. In this case, the eggs are fertilized in a lab so as to form embryos. These are then placed in the woman’s uterus.

Preparation: While IUI needs a proper process of studying the ovulation cycle of the woman so as to detect the same, in IVF, the process of ovulation has to be stimulated using hormonal injections and other types of drugs so as to extract eggs that need to be fertilised. In this case, IVF tends to be a more intense method of treatment.

Chances of pregnancy: In IUI, the chances of pregnancy depends on whether or not the fallopian tubes pick up the sperm and whether or not the egg and sperm meet each other. In IVF, the chances of pregnancy depends on the age of the woman as well as the causes behind infertility. Also, the efficacy of IVF depends from patient to patient and also on the quality of the IVF laboratory where the treatment happens. In IUI, the practices are more standard. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult an IVF Specialist.

I am a 24 year old married. I am suffering from heavy irregular bleeding since last 7 weeks after having a medical abortion. Ultrasound was advised by doctor and it's clear with nothing left. She suggested me to take trapic twice for 3 days to stop bleeding but It didn't stop. What should I do and is there any complication which I should be worried off? Will there be any issues regarding my future pregnancy.

Hi Pooja. Welcome to Lyberate. If your bleeding has not stopped with trap ic then it's best you start with progesterone tablets to control the bleeding. Also take plenty of water. Please do continue Tranexamic acid tablets along with progesterone. All the best. Hope you get well soon.

Hello Doctor, I'm 31 yrs old. I have been trying to conceive my second baby for past four months. We made love during my fertile days only. Everything was well planned, but we did not succeed. I have also to confess that i'm under stress to conceive faster and also traveled exhaustively. We could not guess what would be the problem for not conceiving. Should I consult a gynaec now? Note: I have no issues like irregular periods, PCOD etc. I had no problem in my first pregnancy also

It can sometimes happen as it depends on chance. As you had previous pregnancy, your chance is quite good. Try for another 2 months. If still, no conception, consult doctor .

The common cause for having no periods properly due to pcos. The common symptoms are: acne. Weight gain and trouble losing weight. Extra hair on the face and body. Often women get thicker and darker facial hair and more hair on the chest, belly, and back. Thinning hair on the scalp. Irregular periods. Often women with pcos have fewer than nine periods a year. Some women have no periods. Others have very heavy bleeding. Fertility problems. Many women who have pcos have trouble getting pregnant (infertility). Depression.

Swine Flu in Pregnancy

Swine Flu in Pregnancy

Swine Flu in Pregnancy

What is Swine Flu?

It is a respiratory(associated with breathing) disease caused by a virus. This virus is similar to the influenza virus responsible for causing the common cold.

The scientific name of the virus is H1N1 type A influenza virus. This strain was earlier known to infect pigs(swine family), thus the name swine flu.It is a new strain of the virus, previously unknown in humans, hence, there is no known immunity in humans against this virus.

What are the symptoms:

There are three main symptoms :

Fever,
cough,
shortness of breath.
and a combination of one or many of these:

Headache, aching muscles, running nose, sneezing, chills, tiredness, loss of appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea.

It is usually a mild disease for most people. Symptoms appear quickly and last for almost for one week to ten days.

How do I know if I am at higher risk?

Certain categories of people seem to be at higher risk for complications from swine flu. These are:

Asians, especially people living in poorly ventilated colonies.
People having associated ailments like - asthma, diabetes, paralysis, previous strokes, spinal problems, and jaundice.
Extremes of body weight;very thin built or obese people.
Smokers
Teenage mothers, women in their second and third trimesters are at higher risk.
How can swine flu harm my baby?

For the majority of pregnant women, swine flu does not cause any serious damage to the mother or the baby.

Fever in the first three months may increase the risk of neural tube and birth defects.
Fever during labor may cause neonatal convulsions, encephalopathy, cerebral palsy and fetal death.
Pregnant women should always take fever seriously and contact their doctor when the temperature goes more than 100 degrees.

How does swine flu affect me during my pregnancy?

Active infection by swine flu virus may cause miscarriages, preterm delivery, and adverse delivery outcomes.
There is a higher risk of hospitalization/ ICU admission during pregnancy.
Chest infections/ Secondary bacterial infections are common resulting in pneumonia or even brain infections.
What can I do to protect myself?

Protection can be at three levels:

1) Taking general precautions- which is most useful for prevention.

2) Use of vaccines.

3) use of drugs

Use of face masks will not prevent swine flu. Focus instead on hygiene and clean surroundings.

It is safe to consume well cooked pork and pork products.

Hi, First check the urine for pregnancy. If it is positive, then consult your gynaecologist who will prescribe some medications to end this pregnancy and later get an IUCD inserted after getting your periods which gives protection for 3-5 years.

Can misoprostol be taken orally (under the tongue) or it has to be taken vaginally only. Pls suggest Thanks.

BHMS, DEMS
Homeopath, Pune
The misoprostol tablets can be used in one of three ways: under the tongue, vaginally or buccally (in the space between gum and cheek). All methods are equally effective in causing an abortion. However all the misoprostol must be used in the same way. We strongly advise you to use misoprostol under your tongue. This way, no remains of the pills can be found in the event that you need to go to a hospital.

Hi, retrochorionic collection is excessive bleeding and a collection of blood or hematoma that forms between the chorionic membrane surrounding the embryo. Older pregnant women with large amounts of bleeding have higher rates for miscarriage. You need to take care of wife, with routine check ups.

Absolutely, there absolutely no problem in taking alfalfa tonic. Weakness is commonly present after viral fever if the treatment is taken solely from allopathy. Take this tonic and feel the effect, if there will be any other problem, then consult a qualified homoeopathic physician.

Some times when a woman is breastfeeding the baby she may not get her periods or her periods may become irregular but still it is better to confirm the pregnancy status by getting an ultrasound abdomen done and once it shows negative results then do adopt some contraceptive methods to avoid another pregnancy do soon

I have unusual period and had done many doctors but their is no result can you suggest me.
Dear lybrate user. Unusal period is related with improprer digestion, poor nutririon, irregular life style etc. For that. Eat more and more green leafy vegetables. Do not eat fast food, junk food, heavy food, spicy, ioly food etc which are heavy in digest. Manage the stress and anger. Do yoga / pranayama for mental relexation. Take enough sleep.
