I'm 18 year old boy. I had a CT scan recently. For my nasal polyp removal operation. I heard that one CT scan can expose radiation as 200 chest x-ray. Is it true ? Will it increase the possibility for cancer?

M.Ch - Surgical Oncology, MS - General Surgery, MBBS
Oncologist, Delhi
yes, the radiation exposure from one ct scan is many times to that of an xray. and it is also true that excessive radiation exposure can induce cancers. but there is also a limit ro radiation exposure in a year the body can ssfely tolerate. 1 or 2 ct scans done properly in a year for diagnosing a problem, do not increase your risk of developing cancer significantly. so don't worry.

Dear Lybrate User, Dust allergy occurs due to the production of histamine in blood. This production of histamine is provoked by the entry of certain foreign substance in our respiratory system through the air we inhale. A detailed case taking along with some blood test results are required to diagnose the proper underlying cause behind dust allergy. Please conduct a laboratory test of your blood for TC, DC, ESR & IgE. Revert back with the results & consult me privately via Lybrate. In the mean-time you can take the following medications:- 1) 5 drops of Homoeopathic PYROGEN 1000, thrice daily in empty stomach. 2) 30 drops of Homoeopathic Mother Tincture CASSIA SOPH Q, thrice daily, after meals, in a glass of water.

What is Allergic Asthma?

B.A, Fellowship in Applied Nutrition , PG Diploma in Dietetics and Nutrition, Certified Diabetes Educator
Dietitian/Nutritionist, Gurgaon
What is Allergic Asthma?

Allergic asthma is the condition in which the symptoms of an asthmatic attack appear after exposure to certain allergens. 90% of the cases of asthma in children are allergy driven, while in adults, the percentage is said to be around 50%.

An allergy happens when an individual's immune system exhibits massive reaction or fights vigorously against substances like pollen, dust, animal dander or certain other minute particles which are actually not harmful to the body but are considered so by the immune system.

Symptomatic changes in cases of allergic asthma:

If the symptoms of an asthma attack occur only when you are subjected to these triggers or irritant particles, your case is allergy driven.

  • In such cases, the airway reacts aggressively to the entry of such allergens.
  • The airway muscles tighten up and inflammation is observed.
  • Breathing becomes painful and compromised, and mucus accumulation sets in very quickly.
  • Coughing is a common phenomenon, as the body tries to expel the mucus accumulated.

The allergens mentioned above are not the only triggering agents. Basically, anything that causes irritation could trigger an allergy and an asthmatic attack thereafter. Symptoms in the case of allergy driven asthma are more or less the same as seen in other asthmatic cases.

Confirming the cause of asthma as allergic or not:

The doctor would give you a much better clarification on whether you're asthma is allergy driven or not. There are pretty much two ways to decipher the same:

  • One is to administer a tiny amount of allergen to the skin and making a note of the reaction to that. Whether the reaction is a normal one or an aggressive one would tell if an individual has an allergy or not.
  • Specific IgE test may be done to confirm the cause, or to test the presence of an allergic reaction in the individual.

All your queries pertaining to allergic asthma and asthma, in general, are more than welcome.

I am 63 years old and had recently lobectomy of left upper lobe due to adenocarcinoma stage 1. I am coughing a lot since than and pneumonia twice after the the surgery. It is three months since surgery and and I am still very weak and down.

General Physician (AM)
Alternative Medicine Specialist, Chandigarh
The most common lung cancer operation is a lobectomy. This has been proven to have a lower chance of cancer recurrence in the lung and to have a higher cure rate than a wedge resection or segmentectomy for a stage I lung cancer. The cure rate for lung cancer surgery varies from 20 to 80%, depending on the stage of the tumor. The most common risk is pneumonia, permanent treatment is not there but yes palliative is there available in biochemics. You can consult me privately to ascertain.
