Are there any mental screening tests to find out the extent of depression? I mean tests like brain imaging, MRI etc.

Are there any mental screening tests to find out the extent of depression? I mean tests like brain imaging, MRI etc.
Neuroimaging techniques like mri and ct scan are not very much specific for depression although they show some findings. Newer imaging techniques like fmri is much better for detecting psychiatric disorders but its very much expensive and currently used as a research tool and seldom as diagnostic tool.

Hi, Doctor, i tend to think too much on very small problems also. I get depressed to frequently. It's fact that I'm facing challenge in every aspect of life, getting backs in MCA, rejection in interviews due to various silly reasons, not getting results as efforts I make every where, I feel like looser, feel like I'm too humble and polite and not made for this society. I have some very good friends who support me, but when we can't communicate few days I feel alone and have nobody whom to talk. Last month I despite giving my 100% not able to achieve my target in my business due to some other reasons. I just broked , and not able to sleep 3 days.

I think that you are working too hard instead of working smart. If you concentrate on the small details, then you may miss the larger picture. Sit down and work out a strategy to concentrate on the right and useful material to be able to succeed. Failure is only failure, if you do not learn from it. When you learn, it is experience. And success is the contribution of all the failure that is now nothing but experience. I think it was Bill Cosby who said, that he does not know how to succeed but he surely knows how to fail: by trying to please everybody! You need to perform to your satisfaction because you know what you have prepared for. A people-pleaser will bend backwards and get rejected eventually by everyone. Yes, to some extent it is a ?dog-eat-dog world, but to combat that, you have got to be street-smart. Perseverance is the key that has made ordinary people become great. You are still young, and the whole world is out there to conquer. In your generation you have so many options and opportunities that we feel jaded and worn out just looking at them! So, start all over again but this time around plan well, focus on the larger picture and the process. You will get there, eventually. Talk to a counselor, if you need any help and support to pursue this path. The perception of failure is the biggest problem. It can actualize failure and make you dejected. Change your thoughts and you will change who you are.

Hi, certain amount of stress is normal, but when this stress increases beyond a point it creates problems. 1) identify your triggers of stress. Learn to say no. 2) manage your time properly. 3) practise relaxation techniques like meditation, going for walks, laughter therapy. 4) sleep for 8 hrs. 5) take time out for your hobby or entertainment. Revert back for safe homoeopathic medicines for stress.

Dear lybrate-user, I am sorry to learn about your situation. Well, it is beyond our control whether a person will stay in our lives or not. Please don't worry. Give yourself some time. In 3 months time it will not hurt so much and in 6 months time you will feel much much better. Some wise person once said" if you love someone truly set them free, if they are your's they will come back to you, if they don't they were never yours. In setting others free we set ourselves also free. Don't be sad about your friend having another friend. Think about the beautiful memories you have with her, smile and wish well for her. Engage in activities like singing, listening to music, reading poetry, writing your thoughts or poems, making painting, drawing, coloring, stitching, knitting, dancing- whatever you like. Doing any of these activities has therapeutic value. Once again, don't worry and please focus over doing things you like to do. You will feel better, soon.

Breaking wedlock for one person is not appreciable. It gives bad image about family life to the children. If your husband start earning more should he leave u. No, I wil say. You can continue your friendship for ventilation of feelings. If you start taking both relationship differently you wil be at peace.

I am stressed a lot and I get angry lastly. I dont know what to do and how to control myself when angry. Please give me your valuable suggestion?

Master of Clinical Psychology, Post Graduate Diploma in Psychological Counselling
Psychologist, Pune
Anger is a natural feeling which all of us experience. You don't need to control it, instead, learn to express it in a constructive manner. It needs to be released rather than holding or suppressing. Openly express your feelings with your closed ones. Write down which things make you upset and how you can take it without giving impulsive reactions. First of all, when you get angry, start deep breathing and release the negativity and think what you need to do in a passive manner.

Hi lybrate-user I understand what you are going through. 1. There is no perfect penis size. Any size would do and make you have a satisfactory sexual life. 2. I feel you have body shaming. You are ashamed of being obese and that's why you avoid being intimate with anyone. You can go for liposuction altho exercise would be very healthy not only to reduce weight but for overall mental and emotional weelbeing too. Consult with me for therapy. All the best.

Not at all. You are probably going through some depression and I suspect that your hormonal imbalances may be effecting this reaction. Kindly meet with a counselor and if that person feels you need to meet with a doctor, kindly do so and cooperate with both of them. Even if you are pit on medication do not discontinue the counseling until the depression is fully resolved. If it is only to do with the hormones, it will resolve itself in some time. Yet a visit to a counselor is advised.

I have many tension about my future so I have very weak loss my memory. What can I do for this pressure? Please advise.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd
Psychologist, Bangalore
If you indulge too much into the future, you will develop unnecessary fear. Your best bet is to stay with the present and be satisfied. We must establish a goal in the future but do not get attached to that goal. The concentration to the present is where you put in all your energy to make sure that you are doing the right things to contribute to that future. If not all your attention and energy will be wasted into a future that has not yet come and the present will be affected by a lack of time and energy investment. You can meet with a counselor to monitor your focus, and to also help you with handling your feelings. If your level of stress is too much it can affect your memory. Although concentration is different to memory, they can affect each other. Daily exercise of at least half an hour is a must. Even if you go to a gym, ask for aerobic and/or callisthenic exercises with whatever else you are doing. A healthy body harbors a healthy mind. Have a good night? s sleep, have a good breakfast of more proteins, meditate often, remain free of stress, eat a lot of fiber (whole grains, fruits and vegetables), nuts, avocado, eat dark chocolate, do yoga meditation exercises, etc. Short-term memory is a faculty of the left brain, and long-term memory is a feature of the right brain. When people are stressed, they tend to favor the right brain and abandon the left brain, where short-term memory resides. So, it is really very simple: deal with the stress and activate left brain functions. Here are a few suggestions to activate left brain function: shut your left nostril and breathe, move your eyes from right to left and vice versa for at least half a minute at a time, and do callisthenic exercises with some form of counting, regularly. If your home life is full of distractions and stress, it is likely to affect your memory, adversely. In that case, I suggest that the family goes for counseling.

You may be into an anger related depression or in the early stages of it. Meet with a counselor and work out your emotions with that person and follow all the instructions. When you internalize your feelings you will experience a lot of health complications. If you know of any reason, developmental or genetic that has contributed to this condition, take that to your counselor. So go out and meet with people, exercise regularly, sleep well and eat healthily. You must become active; stay upright during the daylight time; meet people; never sleep during the day, wake up by 6 am every day, play some active games, especially contact games, do physical exercises, talk to people and join some social clubs, attend Yoga classes etc. Watch sitcoms on TV or comedies and cheer yourself up. Go for excursions in groups, for outings, camps, conferences, and religious conventions. Get a pet dog and spend time training it, exercising it and relating to it. Expose yourself to some sunlight every day, at least 30 minutes but not in the scotching heat. Whatever happens, please incorporate these three important adaptations in your life: always be responsible, be respectful, and be functional. If you did these three, lots of things will go well in life. Please pray and have faith in God to alleviate your sufferings. Don?t wait for others to help. Use your own motivation, which might be at its lowest, but persevere and win this battle. Above all to be really happy, you need to live in love and for love: find someone to love and to love you back. A counselor is there only to facilitate you, all the hard word must come from you, and your cooperation with that person is very critical for your success. Be positive everyday and learn to be contended with what you have.

The word depressed is a common everyday word. People might say" i'm depressed" when in fact they mean" i'm fed up because i've had a row, or failed an exam, or lost my job" etc. These ups and downs of life are common and normal. Most people recover quite quickly. With true depression, you have a low mood and other symptoms each day for at least two weeks consult a psychiatrist and get evaluated.
