Know More About Asthma

MD PULMONARY, DTCD
Pulmonologist, Faridabad
Play video

I am Dr. MC Gupta, a respective physician practising in Faridabad for the last 40 years. My talk is on Asthma.

Asthma is a very common disease involves 3-10 % of the population and the prevalence is gradually increasing due to increased pollution in the industrialization and environmental and occupational problems. It is characterized by chronic inflammation of the air tubes that carry oxygen and air from and into the lung. Due to chronic inflammation of the air tubes, there is a hyper responsiveness of the air tube that means if there is any trigger they react, constrict, there is an increase inflammation and that lead to the attack of asthma.

Asthma by symptom is characterized by shortness of breath, chest tightness, cough. These are the main three symptoms. Asthma is usually variable. One we have an asthma attack and the patient may go into dimensions when there are no symptoms at all.

There are many risk factors and if we control the risk factor we can avoid or control the asthma attack. The risk factors are a family if any one of the parents is having asthma then there are twenty-five percent chances of children getting asthma or if both the parents are having asthma then fifty percent of children can develop asthma. Other risk factors are repeated viral infections, stress obesity, rhinitis, reflex, some medicines which can aggravate the symptoms of asthma, even in some exercise can induce asthma which is called exercise induced asthma. Tablet aspirin commonly taken as disprin and in some persons can induce the attack of asthma.

The diagnosis very simple usually on the basis of symptoms the patient is suffering supported by pulmonary function tests, x-ray test, haemogram and total IGE and rust test for lse.

Treatment of asthma depends upon the character of asthma, rather it just mild intermittent or it is persistent. In persistent is mild moderate and severe. If the asthma is just mild and intermittent one needs only rescue medicine that shorts acting beta 2 taken during the time of the attack and after that, the patient usually goes into remission and does not require the treatment. In persistent asthma, in mild asthma long acting beta 2 with an inhaled corticosteroid in minimum doses that control asthma and keep under control. Moderate asthma and severe asthma the bowls of inhaled corticosteroid can be increased from 800mg to 2000 microgram and it should be given in a combination of long acting beta 2. In the fourth stage of asthma, these inhaled corticosteroid plus long acting beta 2 agonists may be added with LAMA that is long acting muscarinic acids agents or taken orally or steroids. The oral steroids should not be taken continuously for the treatment of asthma because they can cause osteoporosis diabetes, hypertension and obesity.

If you want to ask or want any help you can contact me through Lybrate.

Sex During Periods - 4 Associated Benefits

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)

Sex During Periods - 4 Associated Benefits

While the social stigma pertaining to women's sexuality is being gradually (albeit heavily) dismantled, questions addressing the sexual concerns and problems of women are also more widely and openly discussed now. The debate of whether to completely forgo sexual activity during menstruation is one that continues to share explicitly divided opinions despite everything even till this day.
The idea of intercourse during 'the time of the month' is one that seldom receives an approving nod. Inhibitions relating to the 'mess' and the notion that menstrual blood, sanitary pads, and tampons can lower your arousal rates may underplay the many benefits of engaging in sexual activity during this time. However, this remains challenged by the many upshots as enlisted below:
- Helps ease cramps
The release of oxytocin and dopamine along with other endorphins alleviate the cramps and body-ache that one might encounter during periods. Sex promotes better blood flow and relieves stress and can help battle mood swings during periods.
- Shortens the length of periods
Many women who engage in sex during menstruation often claim that their periods last for a comparatively shorter span of time than if they hadn't had any intercourse. This is because every time you have an orgasm, the uterus contracts. The muscle spasms of orgasm allow expulsion of blood and uterine lining faster than it is usually subjected to happen.
- No need for lubes
Your flow acts as an active and better lubrication during sex and this also enhances pleasure. This might act as a natural way to deal with dryness during sex and one may avoid store-bought lubrications during the time of the month.
- Chances are that you might actually like it
Changes in hormonal balances during the first few days of periods can make women more desirous of sexual activity and the partners may enjoy a greater level of pleasure. Sex during periods also ushers in a feeling of deeper intimacy between the partners. An intensified sense of libido that one may feel during this time is extremely beneficial to sexual activity. The pleasure is therefore greater and you might actually like it more than sex on normal days!
How to minimize the mess?
If your primary concern is the 'mess' that you're afraid to create, a menstrual cap or female condom may be the solution to your problem. They help reduce the blood flow during sexual intercourse. In fact, even a regular condom can make it less messy, at least for you partner. Sex in the shower also elevates cleanliness while retaining (often increasing) the excitement in your sexual act. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a Sexologist.

It is a problem when it causes frequent stress and affect your ability to function. There are various kinds of Mental disorders like Schizophrenia, Bipolar mood disorder, Depression, anxiety etc. Signs and symptoms of mental illness can vary, depending on the disorder, circumstances and other factors. Mental illness symptoms can affect emotions, thoughts and behaviors. Examples of signs and symptoms include: Feeling sad or down Confused thinking or reduced ability to concentrate Excessive fears or worries, or extreme feelings of guilt Extreme mood changes of highs and lows Withdrawal from friends and activities Significant tiredness, low energy or problems sleeping Detachment from reality (delusions), paranoia or hallucinations Inability to cope with daily problems or stress Trouble understanding and relating to situations and to people Alcohol or drug abuse Major changes in eating habits Sex drive changes Excessive anger, hostility or violence Suicidal thinking Sometimes symptoms of a mental health disorder appear as physical problems, such as stomach pain, back pain, headache, or other unexplained aches and pains. Your treatment depends on the type of mental illness you have, its severity and what works best for you. In many cases, a combination of treatments works best. Although psychiatric medications don't cure mental illness, they can often significantly improve symptoms. The best medications for you will depend on your particular situation and how your body responds to the medication.

Acne - 7 Home Remedies for Treating it

Acne - 7 Home Remedies for Treating it

Ayurveda offers a unique and holistic approach in treating acne. It is an Indian healing system, which aims at treating pimples and acne by managing its underlying causes. Toxicity build-up and impaired digestion are targeted according to the doshas identified in an individual by an Ayurvedic practitioner.

According to Ayurveda, the whole of the cosmos is made of 5 elements namely water, fire, air, earth and space. Doshas are aggregations of these elements and affect our well-being. If access to an Ayurvedic practitioner isn’t feasible, then try cutting down on junk food as they contain additives and preservatives. Eat foods which don’t have more than 4 ingredients.

Raw and unprocessed food is the best for digestion. Replace artificial skin care products with natural ones. Change your sheets and pillows regularly as they may have trace residues of acne causing organisms. Insecticides and disinfectants should be substituted for their natural counterparts, such as neem based cleaning agents.

Here are some Ayurvedic natural substances which work wonders for treating your acne:

  1. Tulsi: An amazing way to get rid of pimples is tulsi (basil) paste when used by you on a daily basis. If access to fresh basil is difficult, then get a jar of dried basil from your neighborhood departmental store and use it with warm water. Use about 3 teaspoons so that a smooth paste can be formed and apply it on your face for over 10 minutes up to 5 times a week.
  2. Lemon and Honey: A mix of lemon juice and honey is a simple, but effective homemade beauty remedy for the treatment of acne. Mix 1 tablespoon honey and 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice. Apply the mix on the pimples and on the spots caused by the pimples. However, do not apply on severe pimple outburst as it can cause a severe and intense burning sensation. Keep it on your face for about 10 minutes and then wash it off. You can continue doing this 7 times in a week. You will eventually find very satisfactory results.
  3. Cinnamon: Try dry roasting dalchini or cinnamon. Grind it finely and then make a creamy paste by adding honey to it. Apply this paste for a minimum of 5 times a week. Let its goodness soak into your skin and watch the benefits of the paste work its miracle!
  4. Neem: Neem leaves (Indian Lilac) are the perfect natural way of treating pimples. Turn it into a paste and apply it on the areas affected with pimples. If getting fresh neem isn’t feasible, try procuring some dried and bottled leaves instead and soak for about 15 minutes in hot water and use the same as a paste.
  5. Sesame: Turn sesame seeds into a paste by soaking them overnight. Then turn into a paste. You can also use powder, which is readily available. Keep the paste on for 15 minutes and wait for the magic to work.
  6. Potato: Potato juice or grated potato can be applied directly onto your pimples. Let the sticky potato juice sit on your face for over 10 minutes before washing it off. It lends a mild and natural bleaching glow to your skin. The same technique can be also tried with tomato juice.
  7. Mint: Soak a few mint leaves and turn it into a fresh paste , it will act as an astringent.  Mint is also effective in making acne marks fade away if used regularly.
