My wife is pregnant with 16 weeks and having whooping cough since 2-3 weeks. What should I do to get her relief from choking and breathing problem?

MBBS, Basic Life Support (B.L.S), A.C.L.S.
General Physician, Delhi
Dear does your wife has a history of such coughing episodes earlier also? or any history of tuberculosis? since she has been coughing for more than 2 weeks, I would strongly suggest that you consult a doctor and get a sputum examination done. Prolonged coughing also puts her at risk for preterm labor and associated complications if this continues.

-Do steam inhalation once or twice daily -Cough- For dry cough.Take syrup Alex-D for a dry cough.(1 tsp thrice daily) -Productive cough:it brings up mucus from behind the throat or the lungs. These coughs should not be suppressed to the point that they no longer bring up mucus. Use syrup Alex. -Get chest xray done if cough lasts for more than a week and consult doctor immediately.

Hello Sir/Madam ,I am 51 years old Asthma patient. I use Asthalin inhaler three times a day continuously for past 30 years. Is it harmful to use Asthalin regularly? Will it be less effective for me at the time of acute asthma attacks due to continuous use of it?

MD - Pulmonary Medicine
Pulmonologist, Mangalore
Hi Mr. lybrate-user, There are two aspects of treating asthma. One is relieving an attack. Second is preventing further attack. Asthalin is only to relieve an attack. It does not prevent asthma from worsening. Hence if you are requiring asthma three times daily you may need inhalers with extracontroller. Yet using asthalin Does not cause major side effects. Yes. Using it this frequently can cause it to be less effective. I hope I answered your queries.

I can understand your concern - commonest cause of such loose stools are - milk protein allergy, lactose intolerance and improper digestion n food habit and rarely disease known as" celiac disease" which is an allergy of gehu. Wheat. So pls get tests for these many issues done especially - test named as ttg-a.

I have chest pain and cough over 5 years is there any solution for this. I smoke ciggarates.

Reparenting Technique, BA, BEd

I hope it is a regular chest pain and cough. But you never know with you smoking and all. You msut visit a doctor and examine teh chest pain to see that you are not developing some cardiac problem. Whatever happens the smoking must stop. It is very bad habit and if these symptoms are connected to the habit, this may hopefully be the last of your smoking. Please do some of the following as you condition improves:Tobacco consumption, either through smoke or other edible forms, is always harmful. The desire to quit is a good starting point. The best way to quit is to know more about the ill-effects of tobacco. The knowledge is astounding and scary. That information itself should help you to want to quit. The tobacco tar in cigarette smoke lines your lung with huge patches that make that portion dysfunctional. Your oxygen carrying capacity is jeopardized, and breathing is impinged. The nicotine in tobacco smoke stimulates the heart beat to raise the blood pressure in no time at all. There are more than 4000 harmful chemicals in cigarette smoke!!! You will need to stop smoking or consuming any tobacco related items with immediate effect. Then you need to identify why you smoke: there is an oral need, the nicotine effect, the psychological effect of covering up some other issue, for style, to impress, etc. You may discover that the reasons may be unimportant at this stage because you have become too addicted and the habit has become compulsive. You should start exercises, gradually increasing it over a period of time. Do deep breathing exercises every time you feel like smoking (try Yoga), and replace the oral urge with some healthy food substitute to satiate the need. You may take hard candy or chewing gum. If the urge is too strong, then use nicotine chewing gum or nicotine patches, for a little while until the smoking drive reduces substantially. You may join Smokers Anonymous in your city where the support is really extraordinary for like-minded people who are also in the same situation. Keep yourself occupied or engaged with interesting activities during the times when it is most tempting. Keep the company of non-smokers for some time i.e. at least for the first 21 days. Above all announce it to everyone that you have quit smoking. Here’s a piece of very good advice: even if you accidentally/willfully take a cigarette, it is not the end of the world – you can start the cessation all over again. Don’t be discouraged because it is not too late even now to reverse all the ill-effects of smoking. As Mark Twain once jocularly said, “giving up smoking is easy; I have done it many times”. You must persevere with the best support until you defeat this addiction. Counseling is very useful in the initial stages and when temptations are at their highest.

General Physician, Hyderabad
Hello Mr. lybrate-user! Sir please take cetrizine 10 mg tab at bedtime and for your cough pls take cofdex syrup 10 ml 3 times every day for 5 days. Home remedy for cough will be to roast a laung on a pan and crush it and put the powder on a teaspoon of honey and eat it before bedtime. And avoid drinking or eating anything after it. If you are experiencing fever also please take paracetamol 500 mg two times. If your fever/cough/cold is extending to more than 5 days then pls get blood investigations done to find out the cause of your infection so you can start antibiotics hope you get well soon take care.

The treatment available for asthma are inhalers containing medicines which you are already using. If you can identity the triggers of your asthma, then trigger avoidance can further help in preventing the attacks.

Use any good sunscreen that is rated SPF-30 and above (examples – Nivea, Biotique, Neutrogena). Apply sunscreen every 3 hours. Always cover your face with cloth whenever you are going out, especially if on a two-wheeler or rickshaw, to keep it safe from dust as much as possible. Use a face wash at least twice a day. Drink lots of water to keep yourself well-hydrated, 2-3 liters depending on your activity levels and weather. Eat sour fruits like orange, amla. These are rich in Vit C. You can also start oral vitamin C supplements like Tab LIMCEE/CELIN which is available OTC in medical stores. Kindly get a CBC, ESR, xray chest pa view and usg abdomen done and revert.

Hi i'm 22years, female. Last month suddenly I lost my weight, had light fever and cough too. From past five days while i'm brushing blood is coming from my mouth when I spit. I'm scared. Can you please tel me what would be the reason? should I consult a doctor? to which specialist I had to consult?

MDS Prosthodontics

Go to a dentist for a oral check up, if he says that its not due to oral factors then you need to see a general physician. And dont worry, things will become alright as soon as your diagnosis is made and treatment begins.
