I have an abscessed tooth that has gotten infected. When I woke up 3 days ago I found I could barely swallow accompanied by a new level of pain so I went to the ER and got antibiotics. At the moment the swelling hasn't subsided and I have a strange red blotch starting on my swollen jaw & moving down neck and slowly down my chest. The pain is at times nauseating and my head and neck hurt. How concerned should I be and what course of action should I take? Thanks.

Please visit a dentist because with proper oral and radiographic findings we can determine whether the sensitivity is caused by carious tooth or not. If there is no dental decay found you can use any of the desensitizing toothpaste available in the market.

You might be brushing in a wrong way or with a hard bristle toothbrush. Do remember always brush your teeth gently, do not exagerrate. You can get professional cleaning done by a dentist, cleaning is recommended every 6 months and will help you maintain good oral health. You can also learn toothbrushing techniques from your dentist.

Oral submucous fibrosis is a premalignant condition which affects the whole mouth. It is caused by consumption of supari and tobacco. The chances of getting oral cancer are almost 19 times if you have submucous fibrosis. The chances are increased in those who continue to consume tobacco, supari or alcohol. Even after quitting the habits, the increased risk of cancer persists for 10-15 years. Furthermore, submucous fibrosis is not known to revert back to normal. If one continues the habits, the chances of getting further fibrosis which leads to trismus and difficulty in mouth opening increases. If trismus occurs, Various treatments like jaw stretching exercises, lycopene, antioxidants, steroid and hyaluronidase injections to surgery with flaps and coronoidectomy have been tried with different levels of success. As you don't have decreased mouth opening at present, no intervention is advisable. Close Clinical observation 6 monthly by a head and neck surgeon or a surgical oncologist is advisable, so that they can detect cancer at an early curative stage. But definitely you have to quit smoking and alcohol as if not only increases the severity of the submucous fibrosis, but also increases the chances of cancer. If you want to discuss further, donot hesitate to contact me directly.

I am 26 year old girl, right side wisdom tooth surgery done with stitches on 2014 December, 10 months passed still I am not able to eat even soft items, and left side upper tooth problem have since 5-6 months when ever I chew food when up and down tooth get connect while chewing that time suddenly get pain like stone are there in food otherwise there is no pain. So many doctors I visited but all doctors says everything is fine there is nothing x-ray also done. I am not able to chew both side, right side wisdom surgery done left side while chewing suddenly I stop eating like stone in food. Please guide me what should I do?

MDS - Orthodontics, BDS
Dentist, Noida
I think you might have problem on both side, during surgery of wisdom tooth if roots of second molar and wisdom crown are very close, trauma can hamper blood supply of second molar (adjacent tooth), pulp of this tooth can become dead (goes undetectable in x ray, vitality of tooth needs to be checked) and that can cause pain, sensitivity to hot can be a prominent feature. On right side you might have some problem which needs to be checked. If everything is fine then biting pattern of teeth are to be checked, as this can also cause problem while chewing.

Hi, pain can be due to some conditions like dry mouth, gum disease, caries in tooth and fracture of tooth. You need to be investigated properly to rule out the cause of pain. For temporary relief from pain you can take ketorol dt 2 tabs dissolved in half cup of water. You can chew a clove also.
