Exclusively for a DENTIST- Hi, I had to undergo a root canal and filling and a temporary tooth had to be placed 2 days ago cause my front 3 tooth broke in an accident. They call it trauma. How long should I wait until I can start smoking and drinking alcohol again? And tomorrow will be my last day of medication, a pain killer and an antibiotic. No pains.

Just complete the course of antibiotics. If you don't have any bruises because of trauma, then you can smoke and drink. Smoking and drinking are not good for your health, so if you have controlled the habit then don't start again. Be healthy, be happy.

These spots could be accurately diagnosed after checking clinically. The possibilities are for dentinal fluorosis which is pain less spot.

Oil pulling i.e. sloshing your mouth with coconut, sesame or sunflower oil for 15 minutes and then spitting it out can give you whiter teeth. It acts as a flossing agent and lubricates the gums to provide that extra shine to your teeth.

BDS (GOLD MEDALIST)
Dentist, Jamshedpur
I am 35 years old. I am suffering from teeth pain for last 3 days. Please guide me.
Pain can be due to some conditions like cavities, tooth abcess, gum disease, and fracture of tooth. So its important to find out the cause of pain. After that treatment can be decided. You can consult me privately with your reports and symptoms for further advice. For temporary relief from pain you can take ketorol dt 2 tabs dissolved in half cup of water. Or ibuprofen after meal. Brush regularly two times daily with soft bristle toothbrush. Rinse your mouth with chlorhexidine mouthwash.

Hi my son teeth is very big and unbalanced his age is 12 year please tell me how to solve the problem.

Hi my son teeth is very big and unbalanced his age is 12 year please tell me how to solve the problem.
Your son is a 12 year old, but the permanent teeth which are erupting in his mouth are of the size of a fully grown adult, this is absolutely normal. The size will get matched as he grows up. If the teeth are not in a proper order or crooked in nature, please consider consulting an orthodontist, or a child specialist dentist.

Smoking and Its Effect on Teeth

Smoking and Its Effect on Teeth

Smoking is a phenomenon where the smoke emanated from a burning substance, usually tobacco, is inhaled. Smoking is a major cause for multiple diseases such as lung cancer, mouth cancer, blood pressure disorders etc.

Smoking tends to limit the capabilities of the immune system and this makes it easier for various diseases to affect the body. Smoking can lead to problems in the teeth where the gum tissues that attach the bone with the teeth are affected. This may cause the blood flow to the gums to be impaired and affect the functioning of the teeth.

The changes that the teeth undergo due to smoking are -

1. It may increase teeth sensitivity.
2. Smoking causes the teeth to be pulled away from the gums.
3. It can result in swollen and bleeding gums.
4. It may cause pain while chewing food.
5. Bone loss around the jawline occurs in smokers.
6. It can result in stained teeth and bad breath.

Disorders related to the teeth caused by smoking

There are various disorders of the teeth which are directly linked to smoking, they are -

  • Mouth cancer - in this condition tumors are formed in the mouth
  • It can cause plaque to accumulate in the teeth
  • It may cause gum disease that can result in tooth loss
  • It may interfere with healing period of any dental treatment
  • It reduces the success rates of teeth implants
  • Sweeteners present in the tobacco can also cause tooth decay

The effects of smoking on the tooth can be minimized by avoiding smoking altogether. Apart from that, following proper dental hygiene such regular brushing and flossing of the teeth will keep the teeth healthy. Avoiding smoking also reduces chances of lesion leukoplakia (white patches near teeth and gums).

Hello lybrate-user, sensitivity is sharp, shooting type of sensation in teeth on contact of extremely cold or hot food which usually lasts for a few seconds and disappears completely after that and re-occurs again on such stimulus. Treatment plan for sensitive teeth goes as follows: 1. You can use any commercially available desensitizing toothpastes such as colgate sensitive or sensodyne as first line of treatment. If it reduces your sensitivity substantially you can continue brushing with toothpaste in long run to avoid further sensitivity. 2. If you don't get any relief from desensitizing toothpastes it indicates a more severe problem which will need further treatment like layering/coating the damaged tooth surface or filling of the tooth if there is big cavity or root canal treatment in extreme cases getting proper treatment leads to permanent relief in sensitivity problem.
