1)DO NOT bend forwards.Bending forward does no good to anyone. It might twist your spine for all you know.So whenever you need to bend and pick up something, bend your knees first and not your back and pick up.A slipped disk (also called a herniated disk) happens when a disk between the bones of the spine bulges and presses on nerves, this is often caused by twisting while lifting.Hence, kep your back straight and bend at your knees. DO NOT bend over to lift anything heavy off the ground with knees straight.Lift heavy items with your legs, not your back. Do NOT maintain any one position for a prolonged period. If you have been sitting for an hour, take a break walk for sometime and then continue with your work. Same applies if you have been standing for a prolonged time, take a break and sit for sometime.Stretch your muscles and relax. The best way to stand for a prolonged time is the hotel bar position: one foot on the ground and the other foot on the brass rail, when rail is not available use any raised platform.Every 5 to 15 minutes, switch the foot you’re resting on the stool. DO not arch your back while exercising, watching TV,standing or sitting on a chair.Keep it upright.Avoid crouching postures. DO NOT move anything heavy by pulling it in front of you.Always push and never pull. DO NOT sit with crossed legs, sit with knees slightly higher than the hips.Keep your feet on the foot rest. ...etc

After getting mri done, not much to contribute for btterment, don't go for operation. Back pain depends on lot of factors such as your profession, type of work, the way you sit, the way you sleep, the way you lift the things etc. Best way is take rest on flat (palang) bed with 2 inches thickness, don't bend & work or lift any thing from ground, rest should be complete except allowing youself to bath room& all the instruction which are advised by qualified doctor or physiotherapist. I am sure you will be much better, take some simple pain killers like dolo 650 mg three times daily on & off when you require them. Don' t forget todo some back extension exercises when you don't feelpain to prevent future episodes of pain.

Fibromyalgia - How Physiotherapy Can Help You?

Fibromyalgia - How Physiotherapy Can Help You?

Fibromyalgia causes pain in the muscles of the body and weakens them gradually. Patients with fibromyalgia have a number of "delicate points" on the body and are very sensitive to different things that are not typically painful or unpleasant. They can encounter increased the tenderness and weakness which may lead to problems in movement and even proper sleep.

Physiotherapy concentrates on the treatment, and healing of injuries. Standard exercise based physiotherapy methods may help you gain control of your fibromyalgia as you concentrate on lifestyle changes instead of persistent pain, stiffness and fatigue. Physiotherapists can demonstrate generally accepted methods to get rid of the side effects of pain and solidness in everyday life. They show patients how to build strength and enhance their scope of movement. They show them ways to get rid of the everyday pain.

In case you have fibromyalgia, your physiotherapist creates particular extending and stretching programs to meet your individual needs. While there is no known cure for fibromyalgia, physiotherapy might help you get rid of the pain. It can reduce the stiffness.

Strengthening muscles and increasing flexibility through a number of exercises are two vital ways physical therapists decrease fibromyalgia pain and make life more manageable. These include:

  1. Stretching: By increasing your flexibility through stretching, the hardened muscles loosen up giving fibromyalgia help. Your physiotherapist can teach you the correct approach to stretch your muscles, ligaments, and tendons. Various stretching exercises will also be suggested depending upon the condition or type of pain you have in what part of your body. The combination of these stretching exercises might need a stretching band or other accessories like a compression ball or a rubber band.
  2. Aerobic exercises: Low speed and low affect exercises are ideal. Stationary cycles and circular machines are typically less pressurizing on the joints. Aerobic exercises are also a great option for fast recovery, but the intensity depends on your condition.
  3. Aqua treatment: Swimming and other water activities are very good for fibromyalgia patients. The lightness of the water can decrease weight on muscles and joints and enhance adaptability. A warmed pool might be particularly useful because of the warmth that can calm sore muscles.
  4. Massage: Massage can help pain alleviation and joint stiffness.
  5. Joint movement: It can improve movement in the tightened muscles, delicate spots and joint stiffness.
  6. Hydrotherapy: Hydrotherapy with heat or ice packs works by stimulating the healing force of your own body. Cool packs lessen swelling by tightening veins. On the other hand, warm packs on painful areas widen veins. That expands the stream of blood, oxygen, and different supplements and speeds the elimination of toxins from the body.

Physiotherapy is a lifestyle remedy for such conditions but must have to be patient as the results will be gradual. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a physiotherapist.

Back Pain - You must Know

Back Pain - You must Know
Definition:
Back pain (usually one refers for lower back region) is one of the most common reasons people visit the doctor or miss work and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Most people have back pain at least once.
Fortunately, one can take measures to prevent or relieve most back pain episodes. If prevention fails, simple home treatment and proper body mechanics often will heal back within a few weeks and keep it functional for the long haul. Surgery is rarely needed to treat back pain.

Signs and symptoms of back pain may include:
1. Muscle ache
2. Shooting or stabbing pain
3. Pain that radiates down your leg
4. Limited flexibility or range of motion of the back
Most back pain gradually improves with home treatment and self-care, usually within two weeks. If not, see your doctor.

In rare cases, back pain can signal a serious medical problem. Seek immediate care if your back pain:
1. Causes new bowel or bladder problems
2. Is accompanied by fever
3. Follows a fall, blow to your back or other injury
4. Is severe and doesn't improve with rest
5. Spreads down one or both legs, especially if the pain extends below the knee
6. Causes weakness, numbness or tingling in one or both legs
7. Is accompanied by unexplained weight loss
8. First time after age 50, or if you have a history of cancer, osteoporosis, steroid use, or drug or alcohol abuse.

Back pain can come on suddenly and last less than six weeks (acute), which may be caused by a fall or heavy lifting. Back pain that lasts more than three months (chronic) is less common than acute pain.
Back pain often develops without a specific cause that your doctor can identify with a test or imaging study. Conditions commonly linked to back pain include:
1. Muscle or ligament strain
2. Bulging or ruptured disks
3. Arthritis
4. Skeletal irregularities like osteoporosis

Risk factors
Anyone can develop back pain, even children and teens. Research has yet to prove what contributes to back pain. However, these factors might put you at greater risk of developing back pain:
1. Age
2. Lack of exercise
3. Excess weight
4. Diseases
5. Improper lifting
6. Psychological conditions
7. Smoking

Investigations
If you see your doctor for back pain, he or she will examine your back and assess your ability to sit, stand, walk and lift your legs. Your doctor might also ask you to rate your pain on a scale of zero to 10 and talk to you about how well you're functioning with your pain.

These assessments help determine where the pain comes from, how much you can move before pain forces you to stop and whether you have muscle spasms. They will also help rule out more-serious causes of back pain.
If there is reason to suspect a specific condition may be causing your back pain, your doctor may order one or more tests:
1. X-ray
2. Mri or ct scans
3. Blood tests
4. Bone scan
5. Nerve studies (electromyography, or emg)

Most acute back pain gets better with a few weeks of home treatment. Over-the-counter pain relievers and the use of heat or ice might be all you need. Bed rest isn't recommended. Continue your activities as much as you can tolerate. Try light activity, such as walking and activities of daily living. Stop activity that increases pain, but don't avoid activity out of fear of pain. If home treatments aren't working after several weeks, your doctor might suggest stronger medications or other therapies.

Medications
Depending on the type of back pain you have, your doctor might recommend the following:
1. Over-the-counter (otc) pain relievers
2. Muscle relaxants
3. Topical pain relievers
4. Narcotics
5. Antidepressants
6. Injections

Education
Physical therapy and exercise
Physical therapy is the cornerstone of back pain treatment. A physical therapist can apply a variety of treatments, such as heat, ultrasound, electrical stimulation and muscle-release techniques, to your back muscles and soft tissues to reduce pain.
As pain improves, the therapist can teach you exercises that can increase your flexibility, strengthen your back and abdominal muscles, and improve your posture. Regular use of these techniques can help prevent pain from returning.

Surgery
Few people need surgery for back pain. If you have unrelenting pain associated with radiating leg pain or progressive muscle weakness caused by nerve compression, you may benefit from surgery. Otherwise, surgery usually is reserved for pain related to structural problems, such as narrowing of the spine (spinal stenosis) or a herniated disk, that hasn't responded to other therapy.
A number of alternative treatments may ease symptoms of back pain. Always discuss the benefits and risks with your doctor before starting any new alternative therapy.
1. Chiropractic care
2. Acupuncture
3. Massage
4. Yoga

You may be able to avoid back pain or prevent its recurrence by improving your physical condition and learning and practicing proper body mechanics.
To keep your back healthy and strong:
1. Exercise
2. Build muscle strength and flexibility
3. Maintain a healthy weight
4. Stand smart
5. Sit smart
6. Lift smart

Buyer beware
Because back pain is so common, variety of products and neem hakim promise to prevent or relieve your back pain. But, there's no definitive evidence that special shoes, shoe inserts, back supports, specially designed furniture or stress management programs can help. In addition, there doesn't appear to be one type of mattress that's best for people with back pain. It's probably a matter of what feels most comfortable to you.

First of all check your posture when you are lifting any material like heavy bucket. And try to lift the heavy bucket without bending your back. You may lift the bucket after bending your knees only. This will definitely help you. * gentle massage with lukewarm mustard oil of your waist area will also give you relief. * surya namaskar is only exercise which you need to do. * in diet vegetable protein of cereal, b complex supplements and half teaspoon of haldi in a cup of milk for seven days will give you enough relief.
