Ayurveda and Joint Pain Remedies

Pain in the joint is an eventuality that only few can escape. It is an ailment that comes with age and promises to stay despite continued attempts at eradicating it. Being a problem that many are battling, it has provoked attempts at treating it. Various disciplines of medicines have tried in their own ways in dealing with this problem, but Ayurveda with its strict reliance on natural products and aversion to chemicals has been most preferred.

The various ways by which Ayurveda treats joint pains are:

  1. Massage: Ayurveda focuses on massages as a remedial measure. Using few herbal oils and using them to massage regularly on the affected joints has been an accepted remedy for joint pains. A massage promotes blood circulation and creates a calming effect.
  2. Hot and cold compresses: The effectiveness of this form of treatment has remained prevalent through generations. Extremely convenient and easy to use, you can use hot and cold compresses alternatively to ease the pain.
  3. Fenugreek: Fenugreek seeds have a long standing reputation of relieving you of pain. Boasting of antioxidant properties and the ability to reduce swelling, they must be finely grounded and swallowed with lukewarm water to enjoy best results.
  4. Turmeric: In the hierarchy of Ayurvedic medications, turmeric probably ranks the highest. It is packed with multiple benefits. Not only does it take care of the skin, it also helps in reducing joint pains. The most common way of having it is by mixing turmeric in a glass of warm milk and honey.
  5. Apple cider vinegar: Apple cider vinegar reduces joint pains by effectively eliminating the accumulated toxins. It is rich in magnesium and phosphorus and owing to its alkalizing effect, it has the ability to cure rheumatism.

I am 40 years old female. Nowadays I have back ache. What measures are good for the treatment?

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. If you have localised backache with no neurological symptoms like numbness, paraesthesias, weakness etc and there are no systemic and other associated symptoms; the I can advise you: - to maintain proper posture while working and sleeping - if pain is more then you can take a short course of an anti-inflammatory medication which suits you - physical therapy initially under supervision of a trained physiotherapist and then to continue at home - adequate calcium & vitamin d intake if levels are low in body - ice packs can applied if your pain is acute, then hot fomentation can be done at home - analgesic spray for local application can be used and is easily available. - avoid lifting heavyweight/ acute forward bending in mornings normally patients with mechanical back pain respond quite well to conservative form of management within 2-3 weeks, if your pain is not decreasing, then you may need to get in touch with me as I will require certain investigations. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

The movement of the spine generally aggravates the pain of the neck. It is often associated with loss of memory and sleeplessness. Visit us at www.Malhotraayurveda.Com

At this age osteo - arthritis is common feature. Gentle massage over knees with lukewarm herbal pain relieving oils daily for about 15-20 minutes and hot fomentation afterwards will greatly help in subsiding the pain. These procedures would give strength to your knee and reduce the pain and stiffness. Regular oiling the joint will improve the lubrication also. Use knee caps over the joints and avoid over exertion of the joint. This will greatly help. Although some herbal medicines might also help you but after proper history taking. Please update with your valuable feedback after 15 days.\

Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. There are many causes of vertigo, one of which can be degenerative cervical spine causing compression, so you need to send me a detailed neurological examination and mri of your cervical spine so that I can see and advise you accordingly. Till that time you can use tab vertin 4 mg on sos basis for vertigo and do intensive physical therapy for your neck. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance. You can also discuss your case and treatment plans with me in a greater detail in a private consultation.

I got an fracture. How much time it take to heal. I want to know it as soon as possible.

M S Orthopaedics, MBBS
Orthopedist, Mumbai
Hello lybrate user, healing of a fracture depends on the many things. Firstly, on the bone which is fractured. Large bones of the arm, forearm, thigh and leg usually take 6 weeks or more to heal. Smaller bones of the hand and the foot usually take 3 to 4 weeks to heal. Secondly, the region of fracture in a particular bone. End of bones are highly vascular and heal much faster than the middle part fractures. Thirdly, type of fracture. Simple fractures tend to heal faster than a fracture with many bony fragments which we call communition. Also the gap at the fracture site. More the gap, more delayed is the healing fourthly, the type of intervention which is used. Fractures require rigid immobilization to prevent any motion at the fracture site. Any motion at the fracture site can lead to delayed healing. This rigid immobilization can be provided by use plasters, splints or through surgery and fixation with metallic implants. The better the stability, faster is the healing. Lastly, it also depends on the patient's general health and nutrition. The most important factor is the management. I would suggest, you consult a qualified orthopaedic surgeon for the best management. But, in general a fracture would take anywhere between 3 weeks to 3 months to heal depending on all the factors. But any problem at the fracture site would delay it further. Hope this helps.
