Hi. Please take her to any counsellor, to rule out if there are underlying fears, or is she scared of any one, or confidence issue, or may be any deep routed cause. Along with it also consult speech therapist. (it would have been good if you would have mentioned the age of your daughter).

Swami ramdev reports patients have benefited by anulomvilom pranayama. You will have to close and open your son' nostrils with your hand. I hope if you do it there will be definite improvement. Otherwise, medicines are the last resort with little success so why not try pranayama that might benefit just as other mental health problems.

I do stammer nd my voice is not clear like others nd sometimes I found difficulty with some particular words .I hv inferiority. Complex of this prblm but I talk very confidently to everyone .does this prblm has permanent solution? Or I will suffer from this throughout my life.

MD - Psychiatry

Stammering is typically recognised by a tense struggle to get words out. This makes it different from the normal non-fluency we all experience which includes hesitations and repetitions. Commonly it involves repeating or prolonging sounds or words, or getting stuck without any sound (silent blocking). Sometimes people put in extra sounds or words. Often people lose eye contact. Some people who stammer talk their way round difficult words so that you may not realise they stammer at all. This avoidance of words, and avoidance of speaking in some or many situations, is an important aspect of stammering. Stammering varies tremendously from person to person and is highly variable for the person who stammers who may be fluent one minute and struggling to speak the next. Get an mri brain and eeg with a psychiatrist evaluation. It can be dramatically improved, if it s due to anxiety. All the best.

Hi lybrate-user, you are suffering from stamerring and wanted to overcome this problem. Firstly, you have done a good job for coming forward to tell your problem. Stammering is not a big problem unless otherwise no physiological cause is present. It is only 6 months old problem definitely, we can solve it, medication is not necessary. But can you tell, how you feel when you take medicine for this problem. I want you to consult speech specialist or ENT specialist and let me know the result or status of your problem and then we could get clear idea of what exactly and then, start the treatment for you. Do not worry, there are many ways to overcome this problem. Take care.

PDDM, MHA, MBBS
General Physician, Nashik
It can be made lesser only and only by speech therapy. So you should take the help of a speech therapist. Also, i'd suggest you to visit a psychologist as confidence plays a great role in dealing with this problem. I'd suggest you to speak very slowly, word by word. People may make fun of this but believe me, slowly you'll get better at it.

I am a Marketing professional. Most of the time I am very calm and normal. When I see some wrong things I becoming violent and once I become angry I loose my control and speak whatever it comes and do whatever it may be and this status will be last not more than 10 minutes. Kindly suggest some treatments and some medicines for it.

MBBS, MD Psychiatry, DNB Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Nagpur
Being otherwise calm and but at times having an uncontrolled anger outburst for few minutes that you later regret, is suggestive of either a personality problem, impulse control disorder or underlying agitated depression. These are just possibilities which can be evaluated and managed accordingly by consulting a psychiatrist. At times unresolved mental stress may also lead to such symptoms'i would therefore suggest you to consult a psychiatrist for the same. Try mental relaxation exercises like deep breathing for 15-20 minutes, yoga or meditation etc.

My son is 3.2 years old, he has lisping in his words, is it terminate itself as he grows or something has to be done from our side I e to look after the doctor in the same, please advice.

Advance Course in Neuro linguistic Programming, Diploma In Dyslexic Studies, Masters In Psychological Counselling
Psychologist, Mumbai
Lisping could be due to physiological and psychological reasons. Among the physiological factors are the functioning of the tongue, the vibration of the vocal cords, the cleft of the pallet etc. You need to first identify wether it is a developmental issue by consuling a speech language therapist (slp. Once that is ruled out then you need to address the psychological issues.

Voice Disorders - Signs You Are Suffering From It!

Voice Disorders - Signs You Are Suffering From It!

Voice results from the air that comes out of the lungs and passes through the vocal cords. The latter is also known as the voice box. Speech results from the vibration of the chords. Voice disorder might occur for various reasons such as tone, pitch, and volume of the if the voice. The roots of all problems boil down to the malfunctioning of the cords.

Voice disorder examples:

  1. Laryngitis: Laryngitis results from the swelling of the vocal cords. It can lead to a temporary halt of voice or a voice with hoarseness. It often occurs due to a viral attack in the respiratory tract. It can last from a few days to a few weeks. The treatment suggested for cases like these include resting the voice and intake of a lot of fluids. Some common causes that are responsible for laryngitis are GERD, chronic cough, and asthma.
  2. Vocal cord paralysis: Paralysis of the vocal cord can be temporary or permanent. The possible cause of this scenario can be from viral infection, cancer, surgical injury to the nerve etc. In the case of a paralysis of the vocal cord, a person might find difficulty in breathing, can result in weak voice etc. While this condition improves for many people with voice therapy and surgery, for some they permanently lose their ability to speak.
  3. Spasmodic dysphonia: The vocal cord spasm due to a problem with the nerve. This condition can lead to a quivery, hoarse, groaning or jerky voice. In this condition, a person might find it easy to speak at times and have difficulty in speaking later. Botulinum toxin and speech therapy help to improve this condition.

Possible causes of voice disorders:

  1. Growth: Extra tissue formation on the vocal cords might stop the vocal cords to work properly leading to voice disorders. The growth can be treated with injection, medicine or surgery.
  2. Swelling and inflammation: Exposure to chemicals, vocal and alcohol abuse, surgery-related complications can lead to inflammation or swelling of the vocal cords resulting in voice-related problems.
  3. Hormone: Disorder of the male, female and thyroid hormone can lead to voice related disorders affecting speech.

Symptoms of voice disorders:

  1. The harshness of the voice
  2. Voice is breathy, weak and whispery
  3. The voice sounds like choppy or strained
  4. A quivering sound while speaking
  5. The voice sounds harsh or rough while speaking

Diagnosis of Voice related disorders:
Voice related disorders can be detected through a process known as Laryngoscopy. This helps a doctor to view the throat region and find out the possible culprit that may be causing the problem. Some other popular methods are stroboscopy, EMG and imaging tests such as MRI and X-Ray of the throat. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a speech-therapist.
