General Physician,
Heavy sweating (also known as hyperhidrosis) is a very real and embarrassing problem, but there are some effective ways to treat it. What Is Hyperhidrosis? Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a common disorder which produces a lot of unhappiness. An estimated 2-3% of people suffer from excessive sweating of the underarms (axillary hyperhidrosis) or of the palms and soles of the feet (palmoplantar hyperhidrosis). Underarm problems tend to start in late adolescence, while palm and sole sweating often begins earlier, around the age 13 (on the average). Untreated, these problems may continue throughout life. Sweating is embarrassing, it stains clothes, ruins personal contact, and complicates business and social interactions. Severe cases can have serious practical consequences as well, making it hard for people who suffer from it to hold a pen, grip a car steering wheel, or shake hands. Causes OF Hyperhidrosis:- Although neurologic, endocrine, infectious, and other systemic diseases can sometimes cause hyperhidrosis, most cases occur in people who are otherwise healthy. Heat and emotions may trigger hyperhidrosis in some, but many who suffer from hyperhidrosis sweat nearly all their waking hours, regardless of their mood or the weather. Antiperspirants This may be the first treatment that a dermatologist recommends. It is affordable. When applied as directed, an antiperspirant can be effective. Your dermatologist may recommend a regular or clinical-strength antiperspirant. Some patients need a stronger antiperspirant and receive a prescription for one. Iontophoresis (the no-sweat machine) If excessive sweating affects your hands, feet, or both areas, this may be an option. You will use this treatment at home. It requires you to immerse your hands or feet in a shallow pan of tap water. As you do this, a medical device sends a low-voltage current through the water. Many people obtain relief. Some people dislike that this treatment can be time-consuming. Uses: Hands and feet It works by the electric current shuts down the treated sweat glands temporarily. Side effects: Some people develop: •Dry skin •Irritated skin •Discomfort during treatment Prescription medicine Some patients receive a prescription for a medicine that temporarily prevents them from sweating. These medicines work throughout the body. However we cannot prescribe in open question answer session as a rule but you can ask in consultation. These medicines prevent the sweat glands from working. Athletes, people who work in a hot place, and anyone who lives in a warm climate should use extreme caution when using this treatment. The body may not be able to cool itself. Uses: These medicines can effectively treat sweating that involves entire body. This medicine also can be an effective treatment for post-menopausal women who sweat excessively only from their head. Side effects: The medicines that prevent the sweat glands from working can cause: •Dry mouth •Dry eyes •Blurry vision •Heart palpations (abnormal heartbeat) Surgery If other treatments fail to bring relief, surgery may be considered. Surgery is permanent and carries risks. The following surgeries can stop excessive sweating: •Surgically remove sweat glands •Sympathectomy A dermatologist can surgically remove sweat glands from the underarms. This surgery can be performed in a dermatologist’s office. Only the area to be treated is numbed, so the patient remains awake during the surgery. A dermatologist may use one or more of the following surgical techniques to remove sweat glands from the underarms: •Excision (cut out sweat glands) •Liposuction (remove with suction) •Curettage (scrape out) •Laser surgery (vaporize) Sympathectomy is another surgery used to treat hyperhidrosis. This is major surgery, which a surgeon performs in an operating room. During sympathectomy, the surgeon tries to stop the nerve signals that your body sends to the sweat glands. To do this, the surgeon will cut or destroy certain nerves. To find these nerves, the surgeon inserts a mini surgical camera into the patient’s chest just beneath the underarm. The patient’s lung must be temporarily collapsed so that the surgeon can cut or destroy nerves. Uses: •Surgical removal of sweat glands is used to treat the underarms •Sympathectomy is mainly used to treat the palms.

Everyday morning when I wake up I find my nose closed. As the day progresses it gradually opens. But not totally. Please advice what can I do ?

MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Rajkot
You can use otrivin nasal drops to open nose, but it is not advisable to use this drops/spray for more than 1 week. You may have enlarged turbinates or deviated nasal septum. It will be informative if you can take a photo of your nose in such a way that I can show inside of your nasal cavity. For proper visibility of interior of your nose, first cut the nasal hairs and take photo with flash. Send it to me so I can guide you further.

What is the treatment of flat feet?

Diploma in Diabetology, Master of Hospital Administration, MBBS
General Physician,
What is the treatment of flat feet?
You can treat flat feet by: wearing comfortable and supportive shoes with insoles that fully support the arch and help stabilize the heel. Look for shoes that are comfortable for both work and sporting activities. Insoles add additional support to your shoes and comfort the arch of your foot. Wearing orthotics that help distribute and minimize pressure in the foot by providing additional arch support. Orthotics also aid in realigning your foot's ankle joints and bones. Orthotics are custom designed to fit your feet and give you extra support while walking, standing, and running. Using arch inserts and wraps that add extra support to your feet, especially if your shoes lack existing arch support. Inserts and wraps help alleviate the pain of flat feet and allow you to last longer on your feet during the day.

My aunt is suffering from diabetes. What she should do to cure the diabetes?

M.D. Internal Medicine
Endocrinologist,
My aunt is suffering from diabetes. What she should do to cure the diabetes?
Till today there is no permanent cure for type 1 and type 2 diabetes. However some recent research has shown there may be some hope for type 1 diabetes in near future as far as type 2 diabetes is concerned there have been no scientifically proven studies for cure. Obesity with diabetes that is if your aunt has her bmi that is body mass index more than 30 and if she has no complications of diabetes or no contraindication of surgery then some studies have shown that some patients don't require any anti diabetic drugs after bariatric surgery. However I will not use word cure for this type of treatment as still we need to follow these patients on long term basis that is till they live their full life, however this is not true for all patients undergoing this surgery. Some do require medical line of therapy for control of diabetes even after such surgery. So the best options for obesity and diabetes is weight reduction gradually may be to near ideal body weight with regular exercise and lifestyle modification.

Night Internet chanting is become my habit. Now a days I used to sleep after 3 am. How to overcome. please help.

Night Internet chanting is become my habit. Now a days I used to sleep after 3 am. How to overcome. please help.
1. Avoid caffeine found in coffee, tea, chocolate, cola, and some pain relievers.[four to six hours before bedtime.] 2. Quiet, dark, and cool environment can help promote sound sleep. [use heavy curtains, or an eye mask to block light, and also keeping computers, tvs, and other work materials out of the room will help promote mental bonding between your bedroom and sleep] 3. Avoid stressful, stimulating activities like doing work, discussing emotional issues. Physically and psychologically stressful activities can cause the body to secrete the stress hormone cortisol, which is associated with increasing alertness.

Sir. My son is 10 years old. In changing weather sometimes moderately bleeding happens from his nostril. Homeopathic doctor had told me after examination that this is adenoid. So what we should do? is there any permanant solution for this problem. We dont want operation. Please guide me? I will be very thankful to you.

MS - ENT(Gold Medalist), MBBS

Adenoids cause mouth breathing, crowding of teeth, bed wetting at night but rarely nasal bleed. Do you have any xray of nose? if not get xray nasopharynx to rule out adenoids.

Alcohol - How it Affects Your Sex Life?

M.S. - Sexology Sexual Counselling , Ph.D. - Sexology - , PGDPC (Post Graduation Diploma In Psychological Counselling) -
Sexologist, Mumbai
Alcohol - How it Affects Your Sex Life?

Alcohol can it affect your intimacy level with your partner, yes! But with this you might be wondering how can that be possible when you actually sustain yourself for long, maybe longer than you should be. It is probably the “whiskey penis”. Alcohol may give you a sense of elation at one point of time, but it is essentially a nervous depressant. The over consumption of alcohol mainly has a reduced effect on sensitivity for both men and women.

How alcohol affects sex life in men: The effect of alcohol on the sex life of men is immense. In most cases, chronic and acute cases of alcohol consumption have shown to reduce the production of testosterone in men. Since testosterone is the hormone that results in the increase in libido in men, the effects of alcohol really reduce the performance in men. It has shown to reduce pleasurability and it can also reduce the intensity of orgasms. Sometimes, it can cause difficulty in ejaculation or delayed ejaculation.

How alcohol affects sex life in women: Alcohol can have a very mixed effect on women in general. While it can increase sexual arousal and desire, it can also result in low sensitivity. Women have a higher percentage of fat as compared to water in their bodies, this means that alcohol has a more profound effect on their bodies as compared to that in men. Their bodies also take longer to process and eliminate the alcohol. While some women report a heightened sense of sexual arousal and an increase in the duration of the orgasm, a large number of women also complain of lesser lubrication.

Alcohol also has a psychological effect; that is the loss of inhibition that may help in developing carnal instincts when intoxicated. This psychological effect may have a more profound effect than the physiological effects as a result of which women might claim that alcohol does indeed help in better sex. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a sexologist.

Is it lemon tea good for health or not? If good then please tell me about benefits.

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
Ayurveda, Bangalore
Is it lemon tea good for health or not? If good then please tell me about benefits.
10 benefits of drinking lemon tea first thing every morning 1. Hydration - This is I feel the most important benefit – Our body is literally on a fast while we sleep and is in a mild state of dehydration when we wake, lemon water can re-hydrate your body within minutes of drinking it which is why it is so good first thing. Lemon tea – warm water and lemon juice helps to replace fluids that are continually lost by our body, being dehydrated causes rapid aging and deterioration of the body, we feel exhausted, stressed, cant think straight, constipated – the list goes on. We are 70-75% water, it is essential to keep those body fluids up. When we are properly hydrated we are full of energy and feel vibrant. 2. Digestive Aid - Lemon juice doesn’t actually flush the body as you may read, but it helps the liver and kidneys to do their cleaning job, it helps produce the acids we need for good digestion. The acids in lemons are of a similar composition to our saliva and the hydrochloric acid of digestive juices – the body’s natural digestive acids. Lemons are also high in minerals and vitamins which help shift toxins in the digestive tract. Lemons turn alkaline when digested by the body and so help to relieve symptoms of indigestion, such as heartburn, acid reflux and bloating. The citric acid in lemons help to produce enzymes, which aids healthy digestion and stimulates the liver. The American Cancer Society says warm lemon water helps cancer sufferers to stimulate bowel movements. 3. Lemon is a Natural Diuretic - A natural diuretic, therefore helping the body to release toxins – helps detoxification and keeps the bloating away. 4. Clears Skin - With all that flushing and hydrating we are obviously going to improve the look of our skin and we all know vitamin C is fab for our skin right? Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is key to the production of collagen, a protein which aids in the growth of new cells and blood vessels to give skin its firmness and strength. Vitamin C also helps create scar tissue and ligaments, it helps our skin repair itself. The vitamin C contained in the lemon rejuvenates the skin from within our body and gives us a vibrant glow! 5. Immune Builder - One of the easiest, cheapest and most effective ways to boost the immune system – high in antioxidants and vitamin C, drinking lemon juice or lemon tea regularly helps to fight of disease and illness. Lemons are also high in potassium, which stimulates brain and nerve function and control blood pressure. Lemons are anti -inflammatory – inflammation can cause many health problems. People with Asthma and other respiratory symptoms would all benefit hugely from drinking lemon tea/water. 6. Balances pH Levels - Lemons are one of the most alkalizing foods for the body bringing it back to a balanced state, when we are over acidic we are vulnerable to disease – no disease can survive in an alkaline body. Drinking lemon water regularly can help to remove high acidity in the body, including uric acid in the joints – one of the primary causes of pain and inflammation. 7. Freshens Breath - Lemons can help clear bacteria in the mouth assisting with the health of our teeth as well as keeping our breath nice and fresh. The acid in the lemons can erode the enamel on the teeth though, so be sure to rinse with fresh after after your lemon drink. 8. Promotes Healing - If our immune system is strong we obviously heal more quickly and the vitamin C found in abundance in lemons, helps to heal wounds quickly and basically takes care of all the tissue in the body including bones and cartilages. Vitamin C also helps us recovery from stress and anxiety. 9. Lifts our Mood - Just the smell of a lemon can clear our mind and so lift our mood, back in my aromatherapy days, we were encouraged to use lemon essential oil and have it near us while studying to help us stay clear and focused as well as happy! 10. Aids in Weight Loss - Last but definitely not least, lemons help us hugely with keeping our blood more alkaline and people with healthy alkaline levels tend to lose weight more easily and faster than those who are high acid, the body is very sluggish and slow when in acid state and so it would be very difficult to lose weight, for us to lose weight we need our system to work well and eliminate properly, lemon is helpful in this way too. So get that lemon tea going and lose those extra pounds! Of course just lemon tea alone will not bring all these benefits, but an overall healthy diet, lots of water and lemon tea in the mornings will bring huge health benefits.

If you have a problem in your gastrointestinal system, one of the first remedies you should always try is yogurt. Most of the issues in the gut have to do with a bacterial imbalance, too many or too few. Yogurt contains probiotics that stimulate the cultivation of beneficial bacteria, which will help keep the right levels of acid in the stomach, and prevent conditions like high acidity, and avoid spicy food and should have ginger tea daily and do consult a homeopath for complete cure.

Lybrate-user, diabetes melltus if confirmed, then has to be treated with appropriate drugs. The commonly seen diabetes in adults is t2, which can be well controlled by oral anti- diabetes drugs. There are a number of them. Choice of the drug depends on the severity of blood sugar level and presence of resistance to insulin. Some times oral drugs do not give adequate relief, then insulin injections are used along with oral drugs. Apart from drugs diet and exercise play e very important role. Because over weight, inactivity and junk foods are major contributors for development and increasing the severity of diabetes. Diet for each patient has to be very specifically advised. But general rule is to avoid sweets, deep fried foods, junk foods, pastries and other bakery items, sweetened aerated drinks (colas), highly processed food products and fructose corn syrup containing products. Plus alcohol and smoking should be completely avoided. Daily exercise of about 1 hour is a must. Weight should be maintained near normal. One should consume good deal of green leafy vegetables and salads. Thanks.
