I am having tonsils for the last two days and taking d cold total but every 12 hours the fever comes back and also doing gargling with salt water (hot) which provides temporary relief from the pain. Should I consider moving onto antibiotics as they make me feel very weak and upset my digestive system somewhat. If so which group of antibiotics should I opt for.

1. Do warm saline gurgling 2-3 times daily 2. Take throat lozenges, 3. Drink warm/cold fluid to ease pain 4. Have smooth/semi solid food, 5. Take adequate rest 6. My father is feeling a whizzing sound at the back of head and vertigo quite often from past one month. His age is 60. Please suggest what could this be ?

M.S(ENT),DNB,D.O.R.L, Laryngology fellow

Whizzing sound & giddiness can be caused by a rise in the blood pressure or by certain ear conditions (Meniere's disease, labyrinthitis, acoustic neuroma etc). He needs an ENT evaluation to rule out the sinister causes.

Hi, sore throat is usually accompanied by pain. Here are a few steps that you may follow in general to either cure or avoid getting sore throat. Try avoiding constipation at all costs. (a) healthy & balanced diet with focus on fresh fruits/ leafy greens. (b) consume flesh foods in moderation. (c) take plenty of water daily. (d) regularize life style, reduce stress/ strain. (e) protect yourself from intense heat/ cold air. (f) do not take extremely hot/ cold drinks. (g) warm saline gargling 2 - 3 times daily. (h) gargle made of tulsi, turmeric or fenugreek seeds are also beneficial. (i) avoid overcrowded places. Hope the above-mentioned shall help. You may still connect with me in private to discuss and come up with a treatment plan that suits you/ family members in particular.

I had a sore throat and feeling pimples in throat and its paining. So I request you to please suggest me the best treatment.

MBBS, MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Ahmedabad
Best treatment is mild analgesics like paracetamol. Hot water gargles. Quit smoking if you do. Avoid spicy fried chilled junk food. This should help if you do not have fever, pain is not very severe and you are not allergic to paracetamol. Simultaneously you must treat acidity if you have. Take antacids.

There is a need to examine your throat. If there is follicular tonsillitis or severe pharyngitis and some other antibiotic may need to be started. Till then do hot saline gargles and consult further.

I always have cold, I have consulted quite few doctors, their medicines stop reacting on me after a period of time. I also opted for homeopathic treatment. I am not a doctor so I am not sure if it's sinus or just allergy but I really want to get rid of it. I start sneezing at any random time in any situation, sometimes I wake up in middle of night and start sneezing.

MBBS
General Physician,
You may be having allergic or viral infection due to which you are getting cold of and on. Do warm saline gargle regularly have homemade freshly prepared lemon juice which is rich in vitamin c thereby increasing your body autoimmune system which prevents infection. You can have a tab of cetrezine as and when required. Go for regular morning walk followed by free hand exercises in clouding deep breathing exercises. Or you could be having frontal or maxillary sinusitis with nasal septum deviation. Or a nasal polyp if you could consult the ent specialist to rule out the nasal problems. For the time being you can have a tab of cetrezine as and when required.

Vertigo and dizziness

Vertigo can be caused by many reasons:

Bppv or positional vertigo
It is a disorder of inner ear where tiny crystals in the inner ear get dislodged from their place and fall in the semicircular canals. This causes brief spells of spinning (vertigo) for few seconds or minutes with change in position.
Vestibular therapy helps repositioning of these particles and helps getting rid of the vertigo completely if diagnosed and treated correctly.

Vestibular neuritis and labrynthitis (inflammation of the ear connecting inner ear to the brain)
This can take few weeks to months to resolve and vestibular therapy can help speed up recovery and improve function in daily activities.

Age related symptoms
Dizziness and balance problems due to decreased vision, decreased sensations, slowed reflexes, degeneration in spine and other leg joints, weakness in muscles, other neurological problems such as paralysis, parkinson's etc. And side effects of medications.
Fall prevention and balance rehabilitation can help to increase independence and quality of daily living.

Cervicogenic dizziness that is neck related dizziness.
Problems in the neck due to injury or pain can cause feeling of wooziness or unsteadiness or feeling of heaviness in head.
Combination of vestibular therapy and manual therapy for the neck can help decrease dizziness.

There are many causes for vertigo and dizziness and a thorough evaluation is necessary to diagnose.
