Loose motions immediately after feeds are normal in newborn called gastrocolic reflex. If the baby is in nicu, there must be a reason for the baby to be in nicu, talk to your treating doctor.

If legs widening is not congenital, it is usually due to vitamin D deficiency particularly in poor family. Vitamin D 6oooo iu once in a week for 3 weeks and Calcium tab 2 times in a day may be given after seeing blood report. Sun exposure of body is useful.

I skipped my baby girl polio injection can I give that vaccines two months after the date.
Ipv (injectable polio vaccine) dose is to be given at 8 weeks and 14 weeks (goigovt of india, 6 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks (indian academy of pediatrics) booster at 18- 24 months. At present in india there is shortage of ipv across the country so 8-12 weeks schedule has been suggested by goi. You can give second dose later but as you have not mentioned age of baby it's difficult to tell how long you can delay it. Generally delay upto 8 weeks is ok.

My daughter has got high fever suddenly with shivering. She is 7.7 years. She was fine till yesterday afternoon. Last evening became little lethargic and by night feverish. Is it because of sudden onset of cold weather? Or anything else?

BHMS
Homeopath, Faridabad
Hi, yes this may be because of change of weather .Take gelesemium 200, twice daily . Take Eupatrium perf 200, 5 drops thrice daily. Take Antifebrinum 3x, 2 tabs , thrice daily. Take Alfalfa malt, 1 tsf, thrice daily. Drink lots of water and take light homemade food like dalia and khichdi, avoid oily, spicy, fried, junk and cold drinks. In case of high uncontrollable fever, don't panic you should do cold sponging to lower down the temperature. If fever does not goes then go for a set of blood tests. Revert me with feedback. Take care of your health.GOOD DAY.

4 Basic Skin Problems in Infants

MAMC, MRCPCH, MD - Paediatrics, MBBS
Pediatrician, Noida
4 Basic Skin Problems in Infants

Your baby's skin requires constant care and protection because it is exposed to the ravages of pollution, dust and harmful UV rays. A healthy skin also has aesthetic benefits apart from being disease resistant.
It takes about a year for the epidermis of a baby to develop and function effectively. Once the baby turns one, the skin gets thicker and more immune to skin problems.

Here are four common skin problems found in almost every infant:

  1. Prickly heat rashes: Prickly heat rashes are the rashes, which develop on the face, neck, back or the bottom of the baby because of heat. To deal with this situation you should try to keep the infant cool and dry (not let him/her sweat) and ensure that they wear loose and comfortable clothes made of cotton.
  2. Seborrhea: Rashes that develop on the scalp, eyebrows, cheeks, chest, and/or neck of a newborn baby (up to 6 months), are known as seborrhea. It appears to be gruesome, but does not bother the baby. It is recommended to use mild baby shampoo and creams to get rid of the problem. If there is no improvement, consult a dermatologist.
  3. Eczema: About 20% of the babies suffer from a very itchy skin rash known as 'eczema'. The affected area of the skin may turn red, ooze pus or crust over. It can be a result of an irritation caused due to sweating in a hot weather or due to the drying up of skin in a cold weather. Some clothing, specifically wool can even trigger this skin condition in a baby. A dermatologist or a paediatrician should be consulted in order to know what should be done.
  4. Diaper rash: Diaper rash is the development of red and inflamed skin in the area under the diaper. It is recommended to check the diaper for any wetness at regular intervals, and to change it when required. The diaper should not be too tight or left on too long. Applying a diaper rash ointment and keeping the area dry and open whenever possible can help in relieving your baby from the problem.

Go on trying to latch her on nipple for some time and then give her expressed milk before she is tired but not with bottle use spoon. Try yourself to pull nipple with your thumb and finger repeatedly if it is still persisting.

I was born a baby in Feb 2015 and my period is starting from this month but not regularly why is it a problem?
If you are breast feeding and your periods have just resumed then wait for 3 cycles at least to see what happens. Normally the first few periods may be irregular . I would also advice you to use a good contraception in the meantime.

Bow Legs:What You Need To Know

MD - Paediatrics
Pediatrician, Kolkata
Bow Legs:What You Need To Know

Often children are born with bowing of legs, due to folded leg position in utero.

Once they start putting pressure on them while walking, they may straighten out. This happens generally by 2 to 3 years of age.

If not corrected then they may cause some serious problems:
*shortening of 1 leg
*deformity
*difficulty walking running
*higher risk of arthritis.

Persistent bowing may be due some deficiency:
*rickets
*Blount's disease
*lead or fluoride poisoning
*others

First few tests:
25 (oh) vitamin d3 level in serum
Serum free calcium level
X-ray of legs.

How will your pediatrician monitor for a change?

Measurements of distance between knees while a child is lying on the back.

This is monitored to see for any worsening

What can be done?

*treat rickets.
*any other underlying problem to be ruled out.
*braces orthopedic devices to keep the leg in straightened position (serious cases)
*surgery after 3 years (determined according to individual case basis)

All problems may not be solved but timely intervention can change the life of a child forever.

There is no evidence of cancer causing substances in baby products. My sincere advise is apply olive oil (massage oil) wait for half an hour and do routine bath. Other than this nothing is required for baby.

I suppose baby is not having fever and taking feed well and if weight is about 3.75 to 4.0 kg, you need not to worry. There is no need of either ambrodil or antibiotic which are of no use. Vomiting after feed is usually regurgitaion. Burping and right posture is solution. Saline nasal drop is safe and may be effective.

Yes, you may add well cooked whole egg if there is no family history of allergy to egg. It is not necessary to add egg if you are not eggitarian.

Only vitamin d3 is required as it is less in mother's milk, so other vitamins you can get from food itself, instead of medications I would suggest proper diet. Look for diet which contains which vitamins on my facebook page - pediatric department at qury nagadia.

1. Always start with a single food. Either a fruit, vegetable or grain. Avoid a mixture of foods. You can start with mashed fruit first. The presence of digestive enzymes in fruits helps the baby to digest them better. After a week, while you continue feeding fruit, you can start rice water (kanji), after a week clear dal soup or boiled vegetable water. You can also try feeding ragi milk extracted from soaked ragi / finger millet. 2. Always follow the 3 day test rule for every food you introduce. Wait for the results until the 4th day. 3. A 6 month old baby can eat only a tsp of mashed food initially, slowly increase the quantity to a tbsp and then more. 4. Use stainless steel or glass bowls and cups for preparation of baby foods. Avoid plastic ware even made of any superior material, including virgin plastic or graded as BPA free. Any kind of plastic ware consists of plasticizers that are used to make the containers flexible. Plasticizers are similar to BPA and are an endocrine disruptor. Even BPA free plastic and virgin plastic ware have chemical plasticizers. Please use google search for more info. 5. Always feed the baby in a calm, quite environment and in a steady place like on the lap or in a high chair or on the floor. While feeding, refrain the baby from activities like watching a TV show, playing with a hand held gadget like mobile, and tablet or game devices. Some of these emit radiation that is not good for the baby. Meal time has to be a learning for the baby, speaking to your baby about the food – its texture, taste and color helps the baby to develop a liking for the food. Or narrate a good story to the baby, do not encourage the baby to talk while eating. This may seem to be over disciplined but this is the only way I have found to grow fuss free kids. They will begin to love any food that is served. 6. Introduce water from a steel cup or a glass not from a feeding bottle or sipper. A 90 ml cup is best suited. This makes the transition from teat to cup easy when the baby grows up.
