Stop worrying. This is normal, if baby is playful, active and is passing clear urine six /seven times in twenty four hours. Plot weight on growth chart, normal growing curve pattern will make you more happy and confident.

Give genticin eye drops, two drops in each eye for 2 to 3 days. If the baby is drinking milk properly and sleeping passing urine and motion regularly, you need not worry regarding weight gain. They will grow. May be slow but they won't loose weight.

DPM, MBBS
Psychiatrist, Mumbai
ADHD in Kids - Warning Signs!

ADHD refers to attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, which is a brain-related condition found among preschoolers, children, teenagers and in many cases extends well into adulthood. These individuals have significant impairment in academics as well as social situations and interpersonal relations. The child has difficulty sustaining attention, phases of hyper activeness and cannot control his/her impulses which make their day to day life at school and home difficult.

ADHD Symptoms

The symptoms of this disorder among children can be categorized under three headings.

  1. Hyperactivity which includes
    1. Fidgeting
    2. Restlessness
    3. Inability to stay at one place runs around and tries to climb things
    4. Trouble playing quietly
    5. Excessive talking
  2. Inattention, which can be divided into symptoms like
    1. Getting easily distracted
    2. Tendency to loose things
    3. Daydreaming
    4. Facing problems related to organizing things
    5. Not listening carefully
    6. Forgetting about daily activities, carelessness
  3. Impulsiveness
    1. Interrupts others as they speak and talks out of turn
    2. Answers questions without listening to what has been asked
    3. Not being able to wait for their turn to come

Prevalence :
10-12% of school children before puberty are affected by one or more types of ADHD. ADHD especially hyperactivity is more prevalent in boys than in girls, with the ratio up to 9:1. Inattention and poor concentration are more commonly seen amongst girls. The rate of ADHD in parents and sibling of children with ADHD is 5-10 times higher than in the general population.

ADHD Causes
The probable causes of ADHD among children are,

  1. Neurodevelopmental changes - Poorly developed activity of the brain particularly in the areas that control attention and concentration cause ADHD. This causes an imbalance in the neurotransmitters or the chemicals important for brain functioning and development.
  2. Genetic Factors - genetic studies show that ADHD is largely hereditary in nature with a heritability of 75% approximately.

Better to avoid as some will develop allergy to animal proteins. Moreover small babies can't digest them.

My child is one and a half year old and he does not eat anything and only drinks milk. And also bites everyone.
Teething may be the cause behind his biting problem. Start giving him some crunchy food like piece of apple or some teething toy. Give him every home made food which you eat seeing you eating will help him to pick eating habit.

Piles has no relation with the current problem. Children tend to suffer from stomach ache in the initial months of life. However if there are no other symptoms, child is taking orally well and there is weight gain, nothing to worry about. Otherwise consult a pediatrician. Warm Regards.

Even though very rare, milk protein allergy can also happen in exclusively breastfeed babies. Consider cutting down all dairy products in your diet for few weeks to a month - milk, yogurt, ghee or butter, beef, biscuits, or anything that can contain bovine or milk products, and also common allergens such as eggs, wheat, peanuts - and see how it goes.

It is not compulsory and is optional and protects from certain types of pneumococcus bacteria There are currently two types of pneumococcal vaccines: pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13) and pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23). There are more than 90 types of pneumococcal bacteria. PCV13 protects against 13 types and PPSV23 protects against 23 types. Both vaccines provide protection against illnesses like meningitis (infection of the covering of the brain and spinal cord) and bacteremia (blood infection). PCV13 also provides protection against pneumonia (lung infection).

No dear, full correction is not possible without surgery. Post bt shunt child would mostly need bidirectional glenn surgery at later age (usually around a year or two depending upon child's oxygen sats.) but don't worry next 2 surgeries requirement in your baby (approx) would not be difficult as child would be bigger by then. While bt shunt is major surgery in neonatal age group.

Pollution - How It Can Affect Your Child's Lungs?

Pollution - How It Can Affect Your Child's Lungs?

Air pollution is known to take a toll on the lungs of even the healthiest adults. So, it comes as no surprise that the effects of this pollution on the lungs of children is deemed as a grave situation, full of health hazards including the onset of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorders and conditions like asthma and other lung disorders. Read on to find out more about the link between air pollution and its effect on the lungs of children.

Children's Lungs: Mostly, all the organs of a child's body are considered delicate and not fully matured until the child reaches a certain age. The main and largest part of the child's lungs will usually grow only after the child is born, much like the arms and legs. In fact, it is a medically proven fact that about 80% of the tiniest of air sacs grow after the child's birth, these are called the alveoli and they facilitate the transfer of the oxygen into the bloodstream with a life-sustaining function that is built into our lungs. These alveoli continue to grow until the child becomes an adult.

Immunity and Infections: Like the lungs of the child, the immunity of the child is also still in its growth phase, and is very much, unlike the immunity that an adult enjoys. This makes the child more susceptible to infections that are usually carried by air pollution in today's day and age of urban living when myriad pollutants are sent into the air every single day. Also, since children play outdoors more often and spend more time breathing in this air, they are more prone to these infections and lung or respiratory ailments due to this reason. Various studies and tests have shown inflammation in the respiratory passages caused by deposits of carbon dioxide emissions in the lungs of children.

Symptoms: Usually, the very first symptoms that show that air pollution is affecting your child's lungs can be seen when persistent coughing and wheezing sets in, without any proper reason. Also, when the child faces bronchial infections time and time again, all these are indicators of hazardous effects of air pollution in children.

Respiratory problems: Apart from respiratory problems, which can lead to asthmatic attacks, hay fever and allergies as well as other COPD ailments, there are other related dangers as well. These can happen when constant choking and obstruction of oxygen due to pollution becomes a regular affair. These include stroke and brain damage which can eventually also lead to a higher risk of dementia.

How can you protect your child during such times?

  1. Restrict outdoor activity for the time being, especially during the early morning and evening
  2. Make sure that your child wears a face mask when outside, preferably N95 or 99
  3. Use air purifiers at home
  4. Go green and use indoor plants that can remove indoor toxins
  5. Boost your child's immunity
  6. Lastly, keep a track of air quality index in your locality
