Metabolic Syndrome

MBBS

Hello Everybody!

This is Dr. Muffi from Digestive Health Institute. I wanna speak about metabolic syndrome, diabetes surgery and its good value for money and why we should be doing it. Diabetes surgery up to now people call it that most people with high sugar, should not get operated. And today's surgeon across the world reconstructed metabolic surgery to treat diabetes. Your high sugar which stops medications like insulin and various others. So, how is this transition occurs? Something which is called as bariatric surgery which is actually meant for weight loss or people who are very obese, surgeon realize that suddenly sugar has come under control, cholesterol seems to come down.

And therefore, 3 main prone of metabolic syndrome which is diabetes, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and cholesterol. And that's how surgery called bariatric surgery need to do metabolic surgery. Now we know that weight causes a lot of problem across the world. So, the weight causes the problem from head to toe, hypertension, thyroid problems, respiratory problems, sleep apnea and heart failure. It causes a problem in the stomach which are like hernia reflux disease, gallstones, hepatitis, obesity, pancreatitis, development of hernia because of obesity. Obesity is the cause of infertility. A lot of pain like osteoarthritis and high uric acid levels. So, all these things are because of diabetes. 40 different cancers are directly linked to obesity. So in men, there are high chances of prostate cancer and lung cancer. Much higher chances of uterine cancer and breast cancer. So the preventions are the best form of cure.

So, what happen when your BMI is more than 37.5 or it is above 32.5 and with uncontrolled diabetes, with the most conservative association across the world that such as American Diabetes Association, The International Diabetes, if your sugar is not under control with medications, at best you can go for metabolic surgery or bariatric surgery. You can't stick with good sugar control. A chronic diabetic would have the vessels of his heart, his eyes, his kidneys, kidney damage, heart failure because of diabetes, you can have blindness because of diabetes or loss of sensation in the foot in diabetic neuropathy. The best way to get treated with metabolic surgery. What happens with type 1 diabetes. In this bariatric surgery does not cure. But if you are obese, reduce your weight so that the insulin level comes down and other complications will also come down. For all those who want to get in touch with me, consult me, seek an appointment, please do consult me through lybrate.com.

Homoeopathy for All

BHMS, MD - Homoeopathy
Homeopath, Lucknow
Homoeopathy for All

Suppressing your disease problems with large, harmful and raw chemical doses or external creams causes them to reappear them with more intensity, or can lead to several other problems involving internal organs like respiratory, digestive or cardiovascular.

These chemical drugs are not only causes several side-effects, but also, do not cure the problem from internal root, and just make them to suppress, which causes greater problems later.

Homoeopathy offers you side-effect free treatment and permanent cure to many diseases, which are thought to be untreatable or only manageable by taking life-long medication.

In homoeopathic mode of treatment medicines are not chosen just according to your disease only, but whole physical and mental constitution (make-up) is considered, and this type of selection causes permanent cure of the disease and the doses are so minute that there is no any side-effect, even to pregnant ladies.

Moreover, this type of treatment removes disease from its root instead of suppressing it.

Gymming Hard? What Should You Do To Protect Your Spine?

MBBS, AFRCSI, FRCS - Trauma & Orthopedic

Gymming Hard? What Should You Do To Protect Your Spine?

The human spine is endowed with tremendous strength and flexibility, but it is also prone to severe injuries. Due to the presence of a vast network of nerves in the spinal cord, particularly in the lower region, injuries can become gravely complicated with a large scope for permanent damage. Heavy lifting, sudden movements and twisting can lead to spinal injuries and must be avoided while working out in the gym.

There are simple precautions that you can take to protect your spine from accidents and injuries while doing heavy lifts in the gym. Not only will these precautions ensure that your spine is protected from any harm, but they also yield a range of health benefits in the long run.

Following are a few precautions that can be taken from spinal protection:

  1. Check the object before lifting: It is important that you check the weight of the object before performing the lift. Test it out by pushing it with your hands or your feet very lightly to see how heavy it is and determine whether or not you should be lifting it.
  2. Perform a warm up exercise: This is one of the most essential factors for preventing exercise-related injuries. Pace around and stretch all your muscles before you start lifting. This will keep your muscles from suddenly stiffening or locking while you do the lift.
  3. Ensure that the weight is well balanced: Unbalanced weights greatly increase the risk of injury. You should always make sure that the weight you are lifting is evenly balanced on all sides and that the packing is proper so that it does not move around when you lift or have pieces falling off it.
  4. Maintain proper posture: One of the most important aspects of lifting in the right manner is to maintain proper body posture. You must always avoid arching your back or reaching out while you lift as that will surely lead to injury.
  5. Move slowly: Sudden jerks and movements are sure to lead to injury when lifting weights in the gym. Slow and smooth movements are recommended as they keep you from straining your muscles. There is no need to rush through your workout. Always avoid twisting while performing a lift.
  6. Create enough space: There has to be enough room all around you while you are lifting. This will ensure your safety while you are working out.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Childbirth - How Should You Take Care of Your Body After It?

Gynaecologist, Mumbai
Childbirth - How Should You Take Care of Your Body After It?

Childbirth is a very strenuous procedure, one has to undergo. Just like pregnancy, vaginal childbirth can take a toll on your health. But, there are certain simple tips and tricks you can have up your sleeves which can ensure you stay in optimal health post child birth.

Listed below are a few steps one can undertake to take care of your body after childbirth:

  1. A healthy meal: Since childbirth, both vaginal and Cesarean Section (C-Section), are strenuous procedures, you should choose to eat healthy and balanced meal which provides your body with the necessary nutrients and energy. Since, you are also breast-feeding, you need the required nutrients to pass off to your child.

  2. Good rest is a must: You need to sleep on time and rest to relax your body. If you do not rest enough, you will be able to see the negative effects on your skin, manifesting in the form of puffy eyes and reduced energy levels. This puts extra strain on your body. Hire a nanny if you must; but, make sure you sleep on time to give your body the desired rest.

  3. Work-out: You definitely cannot work-out in full flow after you have just had a child as your body is still healing. However, what you can do is engage in mild forms of Yoga stretches and breathing exercises to relax your body. Working out will help you relax your muscles and lose the fat, your body has gained during pregnancy. It also releases ‘endorphins’, the ‘happy hormones’ which make you feel better, both physically and psychologically.

  4. Drink a lot of fluids: It is advisable for you to consume fluids after childbirth. The fluids relieve your body from toxin build-up and help in detoxifying and relaxing your body. Opt for vitamin based drinks and smoothies which impart sufficient nutrition to your body.

  5. Heal your perineum: The best way to take care of your perineum is by cleaning it with lukewarm water and  a few drops of aromatherapy oils or bath salts. Invest in a hazel pad if required as the gentle squirts of water help in cleaning the bacteria and blood off your perineum. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a gynaecologist.

Urinary Tract Infection

MS - General Surgery, MCh Urology
Urologist, Hyderabad
Urinary Tract Infection

OVERVIEW

Urinary Tract Infections are common infections, affect men and women of all ages, and vary dramatically in their presentation and sequelae.

Urinary Tract Infections are a common cause of morbidity and can lead to significant mortality.

WHAT IS AN UTI?

A UTI is an infection involving any part of the Urinary Tract such as the Urethra, Urinary Bladder and the Kidneys.

UTI is an inflammatory response of the urothelium (lining of the urinary tract) to bacterial invasion.

INCIDENCE AND EPIDEMIOLOGY

Women are most at risk for a UTI. Nearly half of all women (50%) will experience a UTI during their lifetime.

WHY?

Women have a short urethra which makes it easier for the bacteria to enter the bladder and cause infections. Also the urethra is in close proximity to the anal canal, which is the source of these organisms.

What causes the UTI`s?

The most common causative organisms of UTI`s are bacteria from the bowel such as E.coli, proteus, pseudomonas etc.

Once the bacteria enter the urethra, they travel upwards causing infection in the bladder and sometimes other parts of the urinary tract.

Sexual intercourse is commonly associated with UTI`s in women. During intercourse, the bacteria in the vaginal area are sometimes transferred into the urethra by the motion of the penis.

Using spermicides or a diaphragm also can cause more frequent UTI`S , due to increased binding of the organisms to the lining of the urethra.

Menopause also increases the risk of getting a UTI. During menopause, the level of estrogen decreases which causes changes in the periurethral tissues that can lead to a UTI.

In men, urethritis is usually the result of bacteria acquired during sexual contact.

SYMPTOMS AND SIGNS OF A UTI

  1. A strong persistent urge to urinate.
  2. A burning sensation during or after urination.
  3. Passing frequent, small amounts of urine.
  4. Blood in the urine (Hematuria) / Cloudy Urine / Foul smelling urine.
  5. Pain in the lower abdomen and the pelvis.
  6. Penile discharge in men.
  7. Pain in the flank region/ back, fever , nausea and vomiting, fatigue  (Infection of the kidneys)

HOW ARE UTI`S DIAGNOSED?

The Urologist will take a proper history and examine the patient and order some basic investigations like Urine Analysis and Urine Culture and sensitivity. UTI`S in males require more detailed investigations like the Ultrasound of the Abdomen to elucidate the cause of UTI.

TREATMENT

Based on the severity of the symptoms, the urologist may prescribe antibiotics empirically based on the common sensitivity patterns. The antibiotic may be changed based on the Urine C/S report , which usually takes around 48 hours time. You may also be prescribed a medicine that will relax the bladder while the antibiotic starts to work.

Patients must make sure they take the complete course of treatment as directed and to return back if the symptoms are not relieved.

Patients are also advised to drink plenty of oral fluids, which help in flushing out the bacteria from the urinary tract. Patients are also asked to avoid coffee, alcohol, and soft drinks containing caffeine until the infection is cleared because these can irritate the bladder and cause worsening of symptoms.

Kidney Infections (Pyelonephritis) usually require hospitalization and more intensive management.

PREVENTION OF UTI`S

  1. Drink plenty of oral fluids to flush out the bacteria
  2. Do NOT hold the urine for long periods of time. Urinate when you feel
  3. Wipe from front to back after a bowel movement.
  4. Urinate before and after sexual contact emptying the bladder completely each time.
  5. Avoid using spermicides/ diaphragms , in case of recurrent UTI`s
  6. Avoid use of feminine “hygeiene” products like douches and sprays, which could upset the delicate bacterial balance of the genital region.
