Tips for Parents to Deal with Autistic Children

The moment when you learn about your child being autistic can be a life changing moment for you. You might feel all the dreams and aspirations which you built around your child come crashing down on a pile of zilch. However, recent developments in this field show that you can certainly take steps to make your child more comfortable and bond well with them.

Autism related disorder usually begin before the age of 3, when the child starts encountering problems in communication and social interaction. This article tries to help you find a way to deal with an autistic child:

  1. Learn more about autism: Learn about autism as much as you can; a broad understanding of the causes and symptoms of the disorder can help you understand your child better. This will also enable you to respond to your child’s needs better, both physical and psychological.
  2. Build a strong support system: It is difficult to parent a child who is suffering from autism. Communicating and interacting with your child might be extremely difficult and problematic. In order to overcome this stress, you should have a strong support network, a support network from which you can draw your strength and logic once you have to take major life decisions for your child.
  3. Review your treatment options: It is advisable to start treatment immediately after the diagnosis is done. Early treatment can help better your child’s cognitive skills that can help him/her cope better with the surroundings and circumstances. The treatment options include behavioral training whereby self-help or social skills training is used to work on the child’s communication skills and behavior. Specialized therapy is another option whereby the therapies are directed at a particular aspect of the child, primarily speech or physical functioning.
  4. Focus on your child’s diet: Diet plays an important role in the regularization of any disease. Even in case of autism, deficiency of certain vitamins or minerals makes it very important to analyze the diet and then assess it. Consult with the doctor before making any modification to the child’s diet.
  5. Behavioral training: Behavioral training is an aspect of autism treatment that allows the child to adapt to various conditions. Before a child undergoes behavioral training, it is advised to assess his/her behavior, functional abilities and the environment your child belongs to. The objective of this therapy or training is to induce desired behavior and get rid of the undesirable ones. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a psychiatrist and ask a free question.

I have Numbness of right toe. Please do help

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist,
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. Decreased sensations in toe region can be due to nerve entrapment either in spine region of around the ankle in one of the compartments or other causes which can lead to a neuropathy. But to think about common causes first, - modify your footwear to make it loose so that there is no compression - start physical therapy especially with tens as a modality - start with medicines for neuropathic symptoms like pregabalin and methycobalamin. If your symptoms do not show improvement, then we will require nerve conduction studies and some blood tests. Do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

I believe you should not be excessively concerned about residual urine unless it is more than 300 ml. If you fee like there is only" some" urine that comes our if you apply pressure after voiding is completed, you do not need medical help. The fact that you have a h/o multiple sclerosis since 2009 has nothing to do with your current problem. I hope this helps. Take care and have a lovely day!

Is there a treatment in Homeopathy foe Alzeimer disease early stage. Arrest the same or reverse it?

Homeopath, Kurnool
There is no one diagnostic test that can detect if a person has Alzheimer's disease, but the process involves several kinds of tests and may take more than one day to complete the evaluation. Evaluations may include the following steps: A medical history, which collects information about current mental or physical conditions, prescription and nonprescription drug use, and family health history A mental status evaluation to assess sense of time and place; ability to remember, understand, and communicate; and ability to do simple math problems A physical examination, which includes the evaluation of the person's nutritional status, blood pressure, sensations, balance, and other functions of nervous system Investigations like a brain scan like CT and MRI to detect other causes of dementia such as stroke and laboratory tests, such as blood and urine tests, for checking various components of blood, hormones, enzymes, infections, etc. Treatment: Alzheimer's disease is difficult disorder. Homeopathy system offers reasonably positive treatment if not cure. When we discuss the role of medicine for certain diseases, we probably do not talk of the 'cure' in real sense, but more of 'control' and 'relief. AD is one such condition, where homeopathy has following role to play: To control the disease process whereby further deterioration of the brain damage is helped to certain extent To improve to an extent some of the symptoms: communication, failing memory, anxiety, restlessness, etc. If you are serious I'll take up the case through Lybrate. I'll take Rs.500 /- as fees towards taking mind and body symptoms and to keep record. And later whenever you consult I'll take 200/- as fees. If you agree Lybrate will raise a bill and you can pay in their account.

What's the treatment of rum fits?

MBBS, DGO (cal)
General Physician,
This is medically known as delirium tremens. Delirium tremens is a medical emergency. It is an acute confusional state associated with tremor and autonomic dysfunction. The essential feature, as defined by dsm-iiir (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, third edition, revised), is that it develops within one week following the cessation of heavy ingestion of alcohol or a reduction in the amount of alcohol ingested. Treatment for delirium tremens or seizures * Offer oral lorazepam as first-line treatment for delirium tremens. If symptoms persist or oral medication is declined, give parenteral lorazepam, haloperidol or olanzapine. * For people with alcohol withdrawal seizures, consider offering a quick-acting benzodiazepine (such as lorazepam) to reduce the likelihood of further seizures. * If delirium tremens or seizures develop in a person during treatment for alcohol withdrawal, review their withdrawal drug treatment. * Do not offer phenytoin to treat alcohol withdrawal seizures.

IT was before 4 years that my mother took me to a psychiatrist for a consultation since I was slow and he recommended me for a "architol" injection, the medicine reacted in the night, my heart beat went up and my whole body (left side) paralyzed the next morning, it stayed till the next night Then we saw a doctor the next day who gave me "pacitane" and my body became normal. Now after 4 years I sometimes get panic attacks and unable to do concentrate without sleep, have nervousness, sometimes unable to eat food also due to GERD, Unable to bear a extreme hot weather. Visited a psychiatrist once again and he had done all tests post which he said I have anxiety, has recommended "Tolaz 10 md" which I have taken for 3 months, it puts me to sleep and is helping only a little, still my left side is sometimes shivering, This is a issue where not even my friends, wife or relatives are unable to understand as I'm looking and doing this fine, but unable to focus at work, not feeling appetite, I have not been having a job for sometime now.

MD - Psychiatry
Psychiatrist, Chennai
The medications which have been given are not for anxiety, but for psychosis. Tolaz and the injection are both anti-psychotics. Because of the injection, you might have had side effect of EPS, hence pacitane has worked. It would be nice if you gain insight and take medications regularly as advised by your psychiatrist. All the best.

Prevention of Seizure

BHMS, MD - Homeopathy
Homeopath, Chennai
Since the cause of epilepsy is often unknown, it can't be prevented, but the seizures associated with epilepsy can be.

Seizures can occur for a number of reasons and often they can be prevented. One common cause of seizures is epilepsy, and in most cases, seizures associated with the condition can be prevented if you know what's triggering them and take steps to modify or avoid those triggers.

Epilepsy Causes, Treatment, and Prevention

Epilepsy — a disorder in which a person has recurring, unprompted seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain — affects an estimated 50 million people worldwide. In about half of those people, the cause of the epilepsy is unknown. Among the other 25 million individuals, the cause may be a defect in the structure of the brain, a tumor or stroke, or a severe head injury — the most common known cause in young adults, according to the Epilepsy Therapy Project. Therefore, it's important to protect your head with a helmet any time you're engaged in an activity in which your head could be damaged, such as playing a contact sport like football or riding a bicycle, all-terrain vehicle, or motorcycle.

There are several medications that can successfully treat and manage epilepsy and help keep seizures to a minimum. Anticonvulsant drugs can work if taken correctly. In some cases, a low carbohydrate, high-fat diet known as the ketogenic diet may be prescribed to help treat children with epilepsy and prevent seizures.

Know Your Triggers, Prevent Seizures

Epileptic seizures are often associated with particular triggers or changes in your daily habits or routine. Here are some common behaviors and factors that may trigger an epileptic seizure:

.Stress, anxiety, or other emotional issues
.Alcohol or drug abuse or the process of quitting alcohol or drugs
.Change in sleep schedules, feeling very tired, or significant sleep deprivation
.A change in medications, or skipping or missing a dose of .anti-seizure medication
.Something that overstimulates the senses, like lights that flash brightly, watching television, playing video or computer games, or working on a computer
.Hormonal changes in women, often from pregnancy or menstruation
.Mental strain, such as from solving complex problems

You can't always predict what will trigger an epileptic seizure; sometimes they'll occur for no apparent reason. But many people are able to see a correlation between certain behaviors and their seizures. By taking steps to minimize these factors, you may be able to prevent seizures.

Seizure Prevention Tips

Here are some tips that may help reduce your risk of having an epilepsy seizure:

Get plenty of sleep each night — set a regular sleep schedule, and stick to it.
Learn stress management and relaxation techniques.
Avoid drugs and alcohol.
Take all of your medications as prescribed by your doctor.
Avoid bright, flashing lights and other visual stimuli.
Skip TV and computer time whenever possible.
Avoid playing video games.
Eat a healthy diet.
Until more is known about the causes of epilepsy and how it can be prevented, your best bet to prevent seizures associated with epilepsy is to avoid the things that can trigger your seizures. This can make a measurable difference in the number of seizures you have.
