Hair Fall - 4 Reasons Behind It!

Hair Fall - 4 Reasons Behind It!

Hair fall is thinning of hair on the head and the severity can vary from a small patch to complete scalp. Most people experience hair fall at some point in their lives. There are various patterns of hair loss:

  1. Receding hairline at the temples with thinning of hair seen in middle-aged men.
  2. Appearance of patchy bald spots.
  3. Lots of hair come out while washing and combing. This results in overall hair thinning.
  4. Certain medicines like chemotherapy results in complete loss of hair. The hair grows back on discontinuing the treatment.

Few of the most common causes of generalized hair loss are:

  1. One of the most common cause of hair loss is hormonal imbalance. Hormones are chemical messengers secreted into the blood, which are responsible for important functions of the body. Fluctuations in hormonal levels often result in hair fall which is why many women experience heavy hair loss during and after menopause.
    • Estrogen is a female hormone responsible for maintaining energy levels, stabilizing moods and sex drive. During pregnancy the estrogen levels become high and then dip postpartum resulting in hair loss.
    • Insulin regulates the blood sugar levels. Deficiency of this hormone leads to diabetes and thinning of hair in both men and women.
    • Lack of thyroid hormone causes thinning of hair. Thyroid plays a role in energy metabolism and low levels redirect energy used for hair growth towards vital body functions.
    • Excess male hormones like testosterone in female can result in female pattern baldness.
    • Management of these hormonal imbalances with replacement therapy can result in reversal of hair loss.
  2. Nutritional Deficiency is another prominent cause of continuous hair loss. A balanced diet is pivotal for healthy luscious hair. Nutritional deficiency effects both hair structure and hair growth. Lack of iron in the diet leads to anemia due to low haemoglobin levels which results in hair loss as hemoglobin carries oxygen for the growth and repair of cells which stimulate hair growth. This is easily reversible with iron supplements.
    • Vitamin B12 is crucial for biological processes like DNA replication. The hair follicles must reproduce and promote the growth new hair. However, a diet deficient in Vitamin B12 will result in failure of hair follicles to replicate and no new hair is being made to replace the hair which falls of naturally.
    • Protein deficient diets lead to hair loss as hair is made of a protein called keratin. The hair starts becoming thinner and starts shedding more rapidly.
    • Calcium is known to stimulate hair growth and crash dieting can lead to hair loss due to inadequate Calcium in diet. Vitamin D is essential for absorption of calcium, so a deficiency of sVitamin D also impairs hair growth. Calcium is present in all dairy products and exposure to sun is important for getting vitamin D.
  3. Due to pollution and exposure to dust, smoke and particulate matter settle on scalp. These migrate into deeper into dermis through hair follicles and lead to hair loss. Coconut oil can go a long way in protecting the hair against the damaging effects of pollution.
  4. Hereditary-pattern baldness with classic M shaped receding hairline is seen in 60% men. It is a combination of aging, genetics and hormonal imbalances. This type of hair loss is permanent.

Symptoms And Causes Of Dandruff

DNB, MBBS, DDVL
Dermatologist, Delhi
Symptoms And Causes Of Dandruff

Dandruff is a chronic disorder, which significantly affects the scalp region and is characterized by the appearance of minute white flakes on the scalp. Although dandruff does not cause serious problems, recurrent appearances of dandruff can be embarrassing for the concerned person.

Symptoms

If you spot numerous white flakes repeatedly on the shoulders or on the shoulder region of your shirt and experience severe itching around the scalp, particularly during weather changes, it is likely that you are suffering from dandruff.

Causes

Dandruff might develop due to a lack of proper hair care, side-effects of certain shampoos or hair care products, seborrheic dermatitis (characterized by scaly red coloured patches on one’s scalp), dry or oily skin, eczema, excessive stress, hormonal changes, side effects of serious diseases such as HIV or Parkinson’s disease (a disease of the nervous system that impairs human body mobility) and also cold weather conditions.

Prevention and treatment

You can control dandruff by applying any of the following treatments:

  1. Therapy involving peeling and subsequent strengthening of the scalp might help in the complete elimination of dandruff. The therapy is developed with the help of highly operative anti-fungal ingredients which sanitize the scalp and regulate the growth of the fungi ‘Malassezia’ to a normal level. This helps in the elimination of the intense itchy sensations and the minute white flakes around the region of the scalp. The therapy also aims to provide adequate nourishment to the hair. This therapy helps in the flattening of dandruff affected hair strands along with the subsequent reinforcement and protection of the hair follicles. If the dandruff is caused due to an oily scalp, this therapy might be useful in the regulation of the unnecessary and excess oil level.
  2. Too much oil should not be applied in case of dandruff, as it can aggravate the issue. However, you can use it once a week, 1 to 2 hours before washing your hair.

Further recommendation

Along with the aforementioned therapies, you can also use certain products which might help as well:

1. Anti-dandruff lotions contain a healthy amount of effective ingredients which aim at the removal of the itchy sensation on the scalp along with the subsequent elimination of dandruff.

2. You can also use anti-dandruff shampoos on a regular basis which help to remove dandruff and strengthen the scalp.

9 Causes Of Impetigo

DNB, MBBS, DDVL
Dermatologist, Delhi
9 Causes Of Impetigo

Impetigo is a type of skin infection commonly seen in children and rarely in adults. It is contagious in nature; bacteria like staphylococcus aureus and at times, streptococcus pyogenes, are responsible for the occurrence of this infection. Generally, the face, hand and neck regions of the children get affected. Impetigo can be classified into two kinds: non-bullous impetigo or impetigo contagiosa and bullous impetigo.

Non-bullous impetigo appears like red sores, which burst rapidly, leaving behind a brownish yellow crust and is more contagious in nature. Bullous impetigo, on the other hand, is generally painless and the blisters are fluid- filled.

The causes of impetigo are as follows

1. Warm and humid climate may trigger impetigo

2. Contact with an infected child can spread the infection to a healthy child.

3. Cuts or injuries can be responsible for impetigo

4. Sports like football and wrestling can also sometimes lead to impetigo.

5. Insect bite and skin rashes

6. Prolonged use of diapers

7. Skin problems like eczema or burns

8. Skin inflammation may also result in impetigo.

9. At times, animal bites may also result in impetigo.

Impetigo is generally noticed in children belonging to the age group of two-five years. Some of the most common symptoms of impetigo are mentioned below

1. Blisters that are filled with fluid

2. Red colored sores can pop out on the infected region

3. Itching sensation

4. Lymph nodes may become swollen

5. Pus may come out from the sores

6. Sometimes the sores may look like pimples

Impetigo, though easily curable, must not be ignored as it can spread rapidly to the other parts of your body. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

7 Causes Of Jock Itch!

Jock itch can be defined as a fungal infection affecting the skin, especially around the inner thighs, genitals, buttocks or the groin region. Also called ‘tinea cruris’, this condition triggers irritation that results from the ring-shaped red rashes that primarily affect the warm and moist regions of one’s body. This condition majorly affects people who sweat excessively, such as athletes or even people who are over-weight. Although it is often bothersome and uncomfortable, jock itch doesn’t bring about severe complications for the affected individual. Jock itch can easily be cured by keeping the groin region dry and applying topical anti-fungal medications.

Symptoms:

The main symptoms of Jym itch include itchy and painful rashes in the buttock, inner thigh or the groin region. The rash is usually tan, red or brown in color, slightly scaly and often formed at the edges.

Causes:

  1. Putting on damp, wet or unlaundered clothing, such as athletic supporter and very tight underwear or wearing them frequently.

  2. Sharing towels that were used by a person suffering from the same condition.

  3. Taking showers irregularly, especially after excessive sweating or exercising.

  4. Living in hot and humid conditions.

  5. Obesity.

  6. Wearing tight clothing.

  7. Immune system disorders.

Treatment:

  1. Anti-fungal creams or lotions can help treat ringworm of the groin. Few examples are Miconazole, Econazole, Clotrimazole and Ketoconazole. These medications should be applied twice a day for about two to four weeks.

  2. In case the eruptions start to ooze fluids or pus, antibiotics may be administered by the doctor.

General Measures:

Measures to prevent recurrence of tinea cruris include weight reduction (if obese), wearing less occlusive clothing, drying thoroughly after bathing, using topical antifungal powders, laundering contaminated clothing, and treating concomitant fungal infection of nail of feet, if present.

Cellulitis - 5 Tips to Prevent It!

Cellulitis - 5 Tips to Prevent It!

Cellulitis is a common contagious bacterial skin infection marked by redness and swelling of the skin that feels tender and hot. It usually occurs when bacteria penetrate through a crack or a cut on the skin’s surface. Although cellulitis can develop anywhere over the face or the body, it is your lower legs that are affected the most. It damages the tissues beneath the skin, spreading to the bloodstream and the lymph nodes. If left untreated, the infection might get aggravated and turn fatal.

Prevention:

In case of a recurrence, preventive antibiotics may be recommended by the doctor. Adopting the below mentioned precautionary measures can help:

1. Gently rinse the wound with soap and water on a daily basis, whenever you go in for a shower.

2. Apply an antibiotic ointment or a cream over the wound to get adequate protection.

3. Use a bandage to dress your wound and change it daily.

4. Watch out for signs of infections such as pain and redness and accordingly go for medical help.

5. People with diabetes often suffer from poor blood circulation. They require extra precautions in order to prevent any skin injury:

  • Minutely check for signs of injury, failing which you might be even more susceptible to infections.
  • Moisturize and lubricate your skin daily to prevent peeling and cracking.
  • Trim your toenails and fingernails carefully so that they do not injure the ambient skin.
  • Wear appropriate gloves and footwear to protect your feet and hands.
  • Treat any infection developing on the skin surface at the right time because they might be contagious.

7 Symptoms Of Shingles

DNB, MBBS, DDVL
Dermatologist, Delhi
7 Symptoms Of Shingles

Shingles is a type of skin infection that results in rashes on certain parts of the body. It is characterized by a single stripe of blisters that may occur on either side of the body. The varicella-zoster virus that causes chickenpox is also responsible for causing shingles. Once you have had chickenpox, the virus remains in a dormant state in the body. If the virus gets reactivated, it might cause shingles.

The symptoms of shingles are:

1. You may experience sensations of numbness and burning on the affected area
2. The affected area may be sensitive to touch
3. Symptoms of red rashes on the body
4. Blisters that are filled with fluid
5. Bursting of blisters and crusting
6. You may experience fever and headaches
7. You may have difficulties in vision

The first symptom of shingles is the pain that results from the rash. In some cases, rashes may occur around the eyes.

Causes

Shingles is caused by the virus that is responsible for chickenpox. After lying dormant for certain period of time, the virus may get reactivated and travel through the nerve pathways on the skin. This is more likely to happen if your immunity level is somehow affected, which makes it easier for the body to get infected.

The disease is contagious in nature, so it is advised to stay away from people who have shingles. Remember that if you are not immune to chickenpox, then coming in contact with a person who has shingles, might result in you developing chickenpox.

Shingles may result in certain complications in the body such as:

1. Vision loss: Shingles, if present around the eyes, may lead to infections in the eye causing vision problems.
2. Post herpetic neuralgia: In some cases, the pain that occurs from shingles may continue well after the infection has subsided.
3. Neurological complications: Shingles may cause inflammation in various nerves, resulting in neurological disorders such as facial paralysis and balance problems.
4. Infections in the skin: Shingles may also cause infections on the skin.

6 Ways To Treat Acne In Men

DNB, MBBS, DDVL
Dermatologist, Delhi
6 Ways To Treat Acne In Men

Acne or acne vulgaris is a medical condition characterized by the appearance of an ugly and vulgar scourge on the face. Acne can cause scars, which are lifelong and can affect the self-esteem and self-image of a person. Acne is more common in adolescents, but grown-up men too can suffer from acne. Acne in case of men is less severe, but still they are enough to spoil one's facial appearance.

Causes

Acne is caused because of several reasons, such as:

1. Overactive sebaceous glands: The trapped oil in the pores of the skin or follicles may result in blockage or blemishes. The sebaceous glands are responsible for creating oil, which helps in lubrication of the skin surface. Over secretion or overproduction of sebum from these glands may cause acne in men. Excess of oil stays in the pores, which blocks the sebaceous duct creating a follicle blockage. This causes acne.

2. Shedding of skin cells: The epidermis or topmost layer of the skin sheds dead skin cells and is replaced by new cells. When this process is hampered, extra skin cells are produced and the presence of lamellar granules in the skin gets lessened. This makes the skin prone to acne. More dead skin cells are produced, which are not shed properly and the cells remain stuck inside the follicles, which lead to acne.

3. Bacteria proliferation: A type of bacteria known as propionibacterium acne is found on the surface of the skin. When the propionibacterium acne grows out of control, acne are caused. Due to blockage caused by dead cells and excess oil, an anaerobic environment gets created and oxygen cannot pass through the pores.

Treatment

  1. Treatment of acne is done by keeping the pores open. This is done by using various skin cleansers for exfoliation of the skin and removing dead skin cells.
  2. Some medicines which are available over-the-counter stores can be used to treat acne. The peroxide and glycolic acid present in the medicines prevent the formation of blockages.
  3. Chemical Peels: Chemical peels work by removing dead skin cells and encouraging new ones to grow, leading to a fresher, more glowing you. A chemical formula is applied to the skin that removes the top layer of skin and reveals the softer, smoother skin beneath.
  4. The procedure is used all over the world to treat skin problems such as wrinkles and lines, acne scars, hyper-pigmentation, and sun damage - the results can be life-transforming.
  5. Several gels, lotions, pads and creams may help in exfoliation and cleansing of the skin. These products contain benzoyl peroxide, which helps in destroying bacteria responsible for triggering infection. They also contain Salicylic acid, which helps in unclogging of blockages.
  6. Several antibiotics can be consumed or rubbed on the surface of the skin for controlling bacterial growth. Certain vitamin A derivatives called retinoids also help in unclogging of the follicles. Some anti-inflammatory medicines can also treat acne.

Acne is a condition which is not just confined to teens and may occur in grown ups and adult males. Acne is irritating and must be eliminated using the various methods advised by your physician. In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

Botox for Men - 9 Things to Expect

Caring for their look is no longer only restricted to women, men care about their looks just as much as women. In fact, it would be more suitable to say that majority of today's population cares about their looks and appearance. In an effort to look younger many men now-a-days are turning to Botox injections in order to get a more youthful appearance. There is no significant difference between Botox effects on men and women.

Here are nine things that men can expect with Botox treatment:

1. A Ten Minute Procedure: The actually process of getting a Botox injection does not take longer than 10 to 15 minutes. There is no need for anesthesia and it can easily be performed as an outpatient procedure. A Botox injection is relatively pain-free.

2. Get Back to Work: Botox is a procedure that you can get done even on your lunch break. Since it does not involve anesthesia of any kind, you can get straight back to the office within an hour of having the procedure. However, it is best to avoid strenuous activities and exercising for a week after the procedure.

3. Quick Results: Botox results are not immediate but can be seen within 3 to 5 days of the injection being given. Optimal results can be noted 2 weeks after the process.

4. Swelling and Bruising: Mild swelling is observed at the injection site, which resolves in max 1-2 hours, bruising is very rare, but if happens resolves on its own in 2-3 days maximum and can be easily concealed with light make up.

5. Effects that Last 4 to 6 Months: Botox injections do make you look younger, but its effects do not last forever. The effect of Botox injections usually lasts for 4 to 6 months. After this, you will need to go through the procedure again to maintain the youthful appearance.

6. Slowed Pace of Aging: Botox can also be used as a preventive measure when it comes to aging. Many men find that Botox can help prevent the formation of wrinkles and soften fine lines.

7. Headaches: Though Botox injections are also a form of treatment for chronic migraines, one of the side effects of Botox is a mild headache. This should resolve itself within a few hours and is not something to worry about.

8. A Few Side-Effects: Generally no untoward side effects are noted if done with the right technique , some rare side effects are drooping of eyelids which resolves on its own in 2 months.

9. Compliments: 'Rested, refreshed, good'; These are some of the words you should get used to hearing when people talk about the way you look. As long as you use Botox in moderation and get the procedure done by an experienced doctor, you should be ready to look fabulous.
