I feel pain in my left breast and even in the bone under the breast and it is unbearable pain.

MCh - Surgical Oncology, FEBS - Fellow of European Board of Surgical Oncology
Oncologist, Navi Mumbai
Its not cancer for sure. Cancer will never cause pain. Its probably related to your age - either because 1] your breasts are enlarging/ growing or 2] related to your menses or 3] Costochondritis - which means a peculiar condition affecting the joint of the ribs under your chest Kindly give more information regarding your menstrual cycle and if the pain is cyclical or non cyclical.

I went to my doctor and she said that a PSA is needed for screening purposes. I asked why and she said that TRT can cause cancer. I told her I have heard nothing of this and if it does I would have never started it. I have read that being on TRT can fuel cancer that is already there making it grow.

DNB, MBBS
Oncologist, Faridabad
Dear sir, Hormone replacement can always trigger hormone dependent tumours like prostate cancers, so it would be best to get psa evaluated periodically. Though mostly it leads to benign hyperplasia, which is not a cancer, but still it's best to be cautious.

Homeopathic treatments for cancer

MD - Homeopathy, Masters Degree of Homoeopathy
Homeopath, Mumbai
Homeopathic treatments for cancer

Homeopathic treatments heal a disorder by inducing diluted symptoms of the same disorder to treat it. There are treatments in homeopathy which are used in treating cancer. These treatments adopt multiple approaches to treating cancer such as inducing similar symptoms to treat the disorder or strengthening the elimination systems (kidney, liver and lymphatic system).

Some remedies used for treating cancer by following the principles of classical Homeopathy are-

1. Lapis Albus - This treatment is usually used in treating cases of breast cancer and malignant growths in the uterus.

2. Conium - Conium is used in treating cancers related to the genital area such as testicles and uterus.

3. Hecla lava - Hecla lava is used in the treatment of bone cancer.

4. Arsenicum - Arsenicum is used to treat almost all cancer-related disorders. It helps in easing symptoms of psychological fear that cancer patients have. It also detoxifies the body and eases the stress from the kidneys and nervous system.

5. Phytolacca - Phytolacca is used when malignant tumors occur in fat based tissues. They are also used in treating fibroids tumors in the uterus and hard tumors in the breast.

6. Condurango - Cancers related to the stomach respond well to this treatment. It is also helpful in treating symptoms of cancer that form in the epithelial cells of the body.

3rd stage of esophagus cancer is curable or not curable? Now Treatment continue chemotherapy.

MD - Radiothrapy
Oncologist, Ahmedabad
Kindly give detailed history of patient. Most useful treatment for cure is surgery, if surgery is no feasible then go for chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In stage 3 generally surgery is not possible, so go for CT+RT followed by surgery or definitive CT+RT. It's all depends upon age, general condition of patient, biopsy, location of tumor. If we add radiotherapy to chemotherapy ,it will be more beneficial. Give ct scan, oesophago scopy report, age for proper decision.

How identity breast cancer? Any symptoms on our body? Any home test? Clinical test cost how much?

MBBS, DNB (General Surgery)
General Surgeon,
Self breast examination should be done by all ladies after the age of 40. Kindly learn the method from a doctor. Self breast examination can lead to early detection of any lump in the breast. Symptoms are lump in breast, nipple discharge, skin changes over breast etc. General symptoms would be weight loss loss of appetite breast pain which may be seen in in many other conditions also. Tests cost would differ from institute to institute. Government hospitals would do it for a minimum. The ideal way to go about it would be to visit a surgeon and get yourself examined and then go ahead with usg and mammography. Based on history and your test results the doctor would advise you further follow up.

Please let me know what is the symptoms of a throat cancer and is massive smoking cause this disease?

MBBS, DNB ( Radiation Oncology)
Oncologist, Mumbai
Hello Mr. Lybrate-user unfortunately or fortunately there is a strong relationship between smoking and throat cancer. So smoking is definitely preventive in throat cancer and many other cancers as well like lung cancer, etc. Symptoms can be a gradual change in voice if it is in the vocal cord. If it is above or below the vocal cords, there may be difficulty in swallowing food, there may be associated pain often, there may be a foreign body sensation in throat, as if something is stuck in the throat. I hope that helps you.

Yes there are medications that can control your symptoms bt I aslo need to know if you hav done any usg report where the size of prostate is mentioned, if you hav diabetes or hypertension. So consult with the above mentioned information nd for necessary medications as prescribing meds in an open forum is unethical fr me. Thanks stay healthy stay happy.

Hello sir. I am 37 and diagnosed with stage 1ovarian cancer. Operated .Got six sessions of chemotherapy. And now cancer free. Before operation I had a blood filled mole at the front of foot thumb as I read somewhere that it is a first symbol of cancer. As it is dried little bit. I want to know is there any problem with this mole? As I want to remove it. And secondly can I get marry?

Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS), MS - General Surgery, MBBS
General Surgeon, Mohali
You can get the mole removed. I don't think it has any relation to the ovarian disease. You can definitely marry but your risk of recurrence will always be there so a consistent follow-up schedule has to be chalked and followed. Regarding conceiving-that can be decided by the extent of surgery done. All the Best.

FACS, MBBS, MS - General Surgery

Dear lybrate-user, chances of re occurrence of cancer is not very uncommon. It can be a local re occurrence or metastasis. The key if to get yourself checked every 6 months. In case any lump/symptom is noticed, it should be catered immediately.

How cancer occurs and how can we know that. What are the tips to identify and how we can cure that. Is there any cure for cancer?

Fellow Breast Surgery (MUHS), DNB (General Surgery), MBBS
Oncologist, Aurangabad
Cancer is a manufacturing defect when new cells are being formed. But this defect has a unique capacity to defy the body's immunity and multiply uncontrollably. When our body's systems are constantly renewing themselves after wear and tear by creating new cells, sometimes somethings go wrong and a defective cell is formed. Body's immunity identifies a bad cell and removes it. But when this step is skipped they keep on growing first locally in some organ and then by spreading through either lymph channels or blood stream. Based on whether the cells are growing at one place or have spread to other places the symptoms change. Locally it is either due to any lump / swelling of crores of cancer cells or due to intereference of these cells in the organ's function. For example cancer in liver cannot be easily felt from above as swelling, but it can cause symptoms like indigestion or jaundice due to interference in liver's function of helping digestion. A breast cancer on the other hand usually presents as a lump in breast or axilla. The best way a person can do, is to identify and respect all the symptoms they have, which persist or are unusual. Some good habits like breast self examination are useful in identifying a symptomless early stage cancer. Cure is a word which is used with a very high caution. Cancer is defined by two most important characteristics - metastasis i. E. Spreading to other places different than site/organ of origin, and recurrence. Few cancer cells usually remain dormant after completion of initial treatment and then re grow after some time. There are many reason and factors helping it or acting against it. So cure is a word usually not used in cancer. And that's why patients are kept on strict surveillance after treatment for 5-10 years. Experts in medical fraternity believe that a patient surviving for more than 5 years may be called cured. But there are many patients who recur with same disease even after 5 years, 10 years even more than that. The goal of treatment of cancer is to improve survival and give best quality of life possible to each patient. In medicine always is always wrong and never is never right.

14 Tips to Help You Recuperate from Prostate Operation

Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS), MS, MBBS
Urologist, Delhi
14 Tips to Help You Recuperate from Prostate Operation

A prostate operation involves the removal of a part of the prostate gland or sometimes the removal of the entire prostate gland. Such a surgery is a serious one and several recovery tips must be followed by a patient to ensure quick and successful healing.

Here are some important tips for recuperating from a prostate operation:

  1. After the surgery, you need to spend up to three days in the hospital for initial recovery. You might be given fluids, which go directly into your veins until you fully recover from anesthesia.
  2. After the operation, normal urination will be disrupted in the beginning, as the urethra stays swollen. Urinating gets a little difficult and uncomfortable for a few days after the removal of the catheter.
  3. You may feel fatigued and may feel under the weather for some weeks after a prostate operation. So you must take things easy for at least two months.
  4. Avoid lifting or moving heavy objects for some weeks following the surgery. Do not perform any exercise, which causes strain. You should ask your friends and family members to carry out chores for you.
  5. After becoming slightly stable you should start gentle exercises. Walking is an effective remedy, which helps in blood circulation and lowers the risk of getting blood clots in the legs.
  6. You should drink lots of water during the recovery stage. This will reduce the risk of getting a urinary tract infection and also help in clearing any trace of blood from your urine.
  7. For improving bladder control, you should perform several pelvic floor exercises.
  8. In case of any kind of pain, you can take over the counter painkillers to ease the pain.
  9. It will take you a time span of three to six weeks for total recovery after a prostate operation. You should consult a surgeon about the best time to return to normal daily activities.
  10. You can get back to work soon, but it depends on your nature of work. Office jobs are not much of a problem, but in case of physical labour, more time is needed before you can resume your duties.
  11. Activities such as driving can be started quite soon after initial recovery. However, it varies from person to person. Some people may get back to driving within two weeks while some may need a month.
  12. You have to wait for 6 to 8 weeks after a prostate operation before getting back to sexual activities.
  13. In case you experience high fever, pain during urination or the inability to urinate, you must consult your doctor immediately.
  14. It takes a person several weeks to recover from a prostate operation completely. Initially, total rest is required. But eventually, he can return to normal activities and lead a healthy life.

Pap Smear Test - Who Should Opt for it?

Regular medical checkups and tests can be very helpful in prevention of cancer and growth of malignant cells or tumours. With the increase in the rates of cervical cancer, gynaecological checkups are of utmost need. For effective cervical cancer prevention, Pap smear bears the maximum number of success rates.

Pap smear is a medical procedure that helps to detect cancer or signs of other cervical infections. The Pap smear test however cannot detect ovarian cell cancer or uterine cancer. It is known to detect changes only in the vaginal cells and cervical dysplasia. Cervical dysplasia refers to the growth of pre-cancerous cells.

How this test is conducted?
1. Pap smear is conducted when the woman is not menstruating.
2. An instrument called speculum is inserted into one’s vagina to be able to access the cervix more easily.
3. Pap smear involves the collection of sample cells from the outer cervix area.
4. Cervical brush is inserted into the speculum and the sample cells are collected.
5. Then, the samples are put on a glass slide for further evaluation.
6. The Pap smear procedure takes only a few minutes bu can prevent serious medical problems in the long run.
7. The Pap smear is not a painful procedure, though it may be slightly uncomfortable for a few minutes only.

Who can undergo Pap smear?
1. Women can undergo Pap smear procedures once they are of 21 years of age and are generally sexually active
2. Women can go for pap smears up to the age of 70
3. Pap smears should be conducted preferably every two or three years
4. Women aged 65 and above and who have had no abnormalities in the last three consecutive tests, may stop taking pap smears
5. Before undergoing the test, it is important to stop douching and using vaginal creams for at least 2 days.
6. If there has been a case of multiple and frequent change of sexual partners, then you must go for Pap smear frequently
7. Women with weak immune system and who bear the risk of HIV Aids
8. Women who are heavy smokers

Hi I am suffering from lung cancer stage 4 I am not having enough resistance to have chemotherapy what should I do Im in stage 4 what will be my life.

DNB(Respiratory Diseases), MBBS
Pulmonologist, Jabalpur
Chemotherapy in stage 4 is as such not intended to be curative, its just palliative to relieve symptoms and prolong some life. If you have opted not to receive chemotherapy after understanding all its pros and cons then its your wish which matters the most. You may still receive other palliative treatments required to relieve you of your sufferings due to disease.
