I happen to see small traces of blood in my stool even while cleaning too, had kind of burning and pain in anal area a week back, no nausea, proper appetite. Constipation issues from 2 days. Kind of feverish. What is the issue, reason and treatment for it.

This could be a fissure or piles. Anal fissure improves with general measures but may require surgery. The general measures I would suggest are 1. Take lot of vegetables & fruits in your diet 2. Avoid chillies & spices 3. Take lot of fluids 4. Avoid constipation 5 periodically do anal exercises (alternately contracting & relaxing the buttocks, anal area & upper thighs) 6. Take sitz bath 3-4 times a day. This means sitting in a tub of warm water & doing anal exercises 7. Atleast once get it examined by a general surgeon. Whether it is piles or fissure or something else needs to be confirmed. If it is piles one needs to know its grade because treatment will depend on that. The surgeon will find it on examination.

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern. It's not clear what causes irritable bowel syndrome, treatment focuses on the relief of symptoms. Following steps should be taken 1. Eliminating high-gas foods such items as carbonated beverages, vegetables — especially cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower — and raw fruits. 2.Some people are sensitive to types of carbohydrates such as fructose, fructans & lactose, called FODMAPs .FODMAPs are found in certain grains, vegetables, fruits and dairy products such as wheat, rye, barley, onion, garlic, apples, apricots, avocados, blackberries, cherries, etc 3.Taking fiber supplements, such as psyllium or methylcellulose, with fluids may help control constipation. Fiber obtained from food may cause much more bloating compared with a fiber supplement. 4.Anti-diarrheal medications such as loperamide, can help control diarrhea. 5.Anticholinergic and antispasmodic medications. These medications, such as hyoscyamine and dicyclomine, can help relieve painful bowel spasms. They should not be used if you have constipation. 6.Counseling. You may benefit from counseling if you have depression or if stress tends to worsen your symptoms. 7. In some people improvement in diarrhea symptoms occurs, if they stop eating gluten (wheat, barley and rye) Don't worry you would be fine Hoping your query is solved.

Bloating: The Causes & Solutions

Bloating: The Causes & Solutions

Bloating isn't a medical condition. It doesn't necessarily mean that a person has eaten too much. It can be a case of eating wrong food which has not been digested by the body. Bloating occurs when air and water get trapped inside the stomach or intestine. As a result, the stomach gets swollen well past its normal level. (Learn more about stomach problem)

Culprits of bloating:Bloating can result from a number of cases. Fatty or junk foods are one of the biggest culprits of bloating. It hinders the digestion process and doesn't let the stomach empty on time. Carbohydrates too can cause bloating. Even carbonated drinks can play spoilsport. It creates bubbles in the stomach leading to indigestion and bloating. Some food items related to gas include cauliflower, lettuce, hard candy, beans, Brussels sprouts, broccoli etc. Apart from this, consumption of excessive junk food and soft drinks can lead to bloating.

Steps to avoid bloating: The best way to avoid bloating is to refrain from bloat causing foods as mentioned earlier. If you wear dentures (know more about dentures), it should be ensured that it fits properly. There are instances when excess air gets inside the stomach due to an improper fixture of denture leading to bloating. Eating or drinking slowly is another good way of staying away from bloating. When you eat slowly, there are fewer chances of extra air getting inside the stomach. In the case of beverage consumption, avoiding the straw is a good idea. This way the unwanted air cannot make their way inside the tummy and play foul.

Taking a small walk after every meal is another good way of staying away from bloating. This way the gas inside the tummy cannot rise above the surface. The practice of calming technique such as yoga, deep breathing and meditation also goes a long way in giving relief from bloating.

Some home remedies to get rid of bloating include:

  • A cup of ginger, lemon and honey in a cup of hot water once everyday
  • 1 cup of herbal peppermint tea freshly prepared in boiled water
  • In the case of regular stomach bloating, intake of one caraway seed on a daily basis fetches immediate results
  • Consumption of a cup of baked pumpkin twice a week
  • Consumption of warm lemon water before you start your day is another good way of keeping bloating at bay.

Bloating can also be a symptom of other intestinal related problems as well. If the general method of control and measured diet doesn't suffice, it is time to visit a doctor to find the underlying cause of your problem. Doctors perform a series of tests to understand the problem and prescribe the required medicine to control or cure the problem.

Fellowship in Minimal Access Surgery, MS - General Surgery, MBBS, FICS

It looks like you have piles. However there is nothing to worry. Piles are treated with diet modifications and some medicine in more than 90% cases. You must avoid constipation. Take plenty of fibre, fruits and fluids. Avoid non-veg, fried and spicy food. Take extra fibre like isafgole with water as a dietary supplement twice a day. In case bleeding persists have yourself examined by a surgeon. Thanks and god bless.

Want Solution For IBS

Want Solution For IBS

Doctor, whenever I eat my meals, i’m getting the urge to defecate, whenever I finish breakfast, I get the urge, my stools are never solid etc.”- these kinds of patient’s presentations are quite common in ibs. This is a chronic, not easy to treat and frustration inducing disease.

Common symptoms of IBS-

  • Abdominal pain and discomfort.
  • Abdominal contraction increases after eating.
  • Abdominal cramps with bloating.
  • Feeling of unclear bowel.
  • Chronic diarrhea, constipation or a combination of both.
  • Flatulence.

Ayurveda explains ibs as grahani signs and symptoms are based on dosha dominance i.e. Vataj, pittaj, kaphaj grahani.

Line of treatment in ibs-

The medicines should have following qualities: deepana – carminative property, pachana – digestive, sangrahi – intestinal restorative, which increases absorption capacity of intestines laghu – lightness in the body

Home remedies for grahani (ibs)-

1. Flaxseed

Flaxseed is a good source of dietary fiber required for the swift and comprehensive passage of waste products. Plus, flaxseed is a good supplier of omega-3 essential fatty acids that are known to support the immune and digestive systems. Both constipation and diarrhea can be treated with flaxseed.

Add one teaspoon of flaxseed to one cup of boiling water. Steep for five to 10 minutes and then drink this herbal tea before going to bed. Drink daily to keep your stomach clean and free from gas.

2. Peppermint

Peppermint contains menthol oil, which has an antispasmodic effect on the smooth muscles of the digestive tract. This helps relieve bloating, gas pain and intestinal spasms. Plus, peppermint can help food pass through the stomach easily.

Add two or three drops of peppermint oil to one-fourth cup of warm water. Drink it twice a day. Continue until there is improvement in your condition.

Note: If taken in excess amounts, peppermint may cause nausea, heart problems and nervous system disorders.

3. Fennel seeds

Fennel seeds can relieve the intestinal spasms and bloating commonly associated with ibs. Plus, fennel seeds play a key role in eliminating fats from the digestive system, thus inhibiting the over-production of mucus in the intestine that contributes to ibs.

You can take one-half teaspoon of dry roasted fennel seeds powder twice daily with warm water.

4. Ginger

Ginger can reduce gas and bloating, hence it is often recommended for treating ibs. Also, ginger can reduce inflammation in the intestines and relax the intestinal muscles.

Grate a small piece of ginger and add one teaspoon of honey to it. Eat this mixture before having your lunch and dinner to get rid of diarrhea as well as improve your digestive process.

Note: Those suffering from high blood pressure should not use ginger remedies

5. Carrot

Carrots are a good source of pectin that can help prevent ibs symptoms as well as treat diarrhea and constipation.

Blend soft, cooked carrots in a blender with a little water to make puree. Add a little salt and eat one-half cup of carrot puree several times a day.

Note: Avoid eating raw carrots if it causes stomach pain.

Recommended diet and lifestyle in grahani (ibs)-

  • Regular intake of buttermilk
  • Fibrous diet
  • Cumin seeds
  • Pomegranate
  • Warm water
  • Easy-to-digest foods
  • Moderate exercise
  • Proper sleep

Lifestyle adjustments such as – fixed timt table of meals, sleeping and waking up at regular intervals, moderate exercise, yoga, stress management techniques are very useful.

Mental aspects to ibs-

Usually ibs is related with mental aspects. A patient with ibs usually suffers from anxiety or depression. In such a case, along with efforts to restore digestive health with the above said remedies, treatment to depression /anxiety should also be given. Hence treatments like shirodhara treatment (pouring medicated liquid over forehead in a stream), regular pranayama, meditation is very useful.

Some ayurvedic medicines useful in ibs-

Ayurvedic preparations like takrarishta, sanjivani vati, shankh vati, kutaj parpati, grahani kapat ras, pachamrut parpati, belagyl, kutajarishta etc. Are useful in grahani. You must consult your doctor before taking any medications.

General Physician, Gurgaon
I have acidity problem and I am not able to eat properly and of late loosing weight. What should i do?
Dear Labrate user, you problem is related to digestion. Acidity is due to over production of acid or due to decreased movement of the digestive system. First stop using things that increases acidity like excess of tea coffee and doing fasting/ empty stomach. Take regular meals even small. The other nothing that is regular motion. If you have constipation that also increases acidity.
