Dear satyanarayan well, all diabetics need regular check ups of feet and legs the cause of leg pain needs to be evaluated and imaging done to confirm that diagnosis. Then your doctor can give prescription accordingly. Self medications are always discouraged more so in diabetics.

I am sixty two years male and have pain in finger bones and muscles all around knee joint. Is it start of arthritis? what medications should I use? what should be the diet? thanks

Dip. SICOT (Belgium), MNAMS, DNB (Orthopedics), MBBS
Orthopedist, Delhi
Hi thanks for your query and welcome to lybrate. I am Dr. Akshay from fortis hospital, new delhi. There definitely could be degenerative changes setting in your joints at this age. Answers to knee osteoarthritis depends actually upon a lot of things but please tell me duration of pain and what are aggravating factors? how much distance can you walk and what is the analgesic requirement to carry out activities of daily routine? what medications you generally take and what has been your treatment history till now for existing problem. I also need to see your latest knee x rays so that I know what grade of arthritis are we dealing with on your case? normally without seeing anything I can still say that at your age you should take adequate amounts of calcium and vitamin d, do regular exercises for knee, back etc because these are the areas which undergo degeneration with age. Diet has got nothing to do with knee arthritis, but still take adequate calcium rich diet to keep bones healthy and strong do not hesitate to contact me if you need any further assistance.

My sister's (age 35, married) one leg swelling since 20 days and she consulted from General Physician he has given medicine but there is no relaxation yet. One more thing which I would like to tell before swelling she felt some pain in stomach as per she (but as per me this might be pain in kidney as she tell me the location) she also have Sugar 200 to 250 up and down. Please suggest which field of doctor will treat this problem ..?

PGD Maternal Child Health, MBBS
General Physician, Akola
She has got uncontrolled diabetes, and a non responding unilateral swelling in leg needs urgent attention to rule out circulatory obstruction in the leg due to diabetic complication. At times it may take a serious turn in to diabetic gangrene. Show her to a general surgeon immediately and once he clears serious reasons, then a diabetologist should prescribe her appropriately. She may need a colour Doppler examination of her leg.

Sir I have pain in my shoulders and also in legs you can explain me or describe the solution pls.

MSc in Orhopedic Physiotherapy (UK), BPTh/BPT
Physiotherapist, Bangalore
Shoulder pain can be a result of injury or disease of the shoulder joint. Injury can affect any of the ligaments, bursae, or tendons surrounding the shoulder joint. Injury can also affect the ligaments, cartilage, menisci and bones of the joint. Some minor shoulder pain can be treated at home. Icing the shoulder for 15 to 20 minutes, three or four times a day for two to three days can help reduce pain. Use an ice bag or wrap ice in a towel (putting ice directly on your skin can cause frostbite). Rest the shoulder and avoid any movements that might cause pain. Simple shoulder exercises can help to stretch and strengthen muscles and rotator cuff tendons. A physiotherapist can show you how to do them properly. Most leg pain results from wear and tear, overuse, or injuries in joints or bones or in muscles, ligaments, tendons or other soft tissues. Leg pain can also be caused by blood clots, varicose veins or poor circulation. To relieve mild pain: stay off your leg as much as possible apply an ice pack or bag of frozen peas to the affected area for 15 to 20 minutes three times a day elevate your leg whenever you sit or lie down please go to a physiotherapist if: you have pain during or after walking you have swelling in both legs your pain gets worse your symptoms don't improve after a few days of home treatment you have painful varicose veins if you feel the pain is from muscle cramp then you need to drink a lot of water because poor fluid intake (dehydration) may predispose to cramps also low blood levels of either calcium or magnesium directly cause cramps. Best wishes.
