Hi, we are expecting baby by december 2015. The doctor we are consulting has told us to take folic acid tablet only for 5 days. When I asked to 1 of my colleague, who recently had baby, she said it was prescribed for 3 months for her. Also the doctor has told us to get double marker test done. Are these test required or they are just money making tests. And shall I give folic acid tablet to my wife till 3 months of pregnancy.

MS - Obstetrics and Gynaecology
Gynaecologist, Ludhiana
Hi , yes folic acid tab. Must be taken daily for 1st 3 months during pregnancy double marker test is meant to detect whether down's syndrome is present in your unborn baby or not. It is combined with n t scan & accuracy is very high. Advantages of this screening are--- ~ good detection rates ~ if positive, it gives you time for another advanced test ~ if positive, you can go for termination of pregnancy.

Pain killers can give you only temporary relief and not permanent cure. All sort of urinary disorders can be completely cured with homoeopathic medicines if properly taken as per the instructions of a qualified homoeopath either direct consultation or online. Homoeopathic medicines doesn't contain any side effects at all. No diet restrictions in homoeopathy, only coffee should avoid while taking medicines. Medicines like can notharis, apis, berberis, lycopodium, hydrangea etc are very good medicines to treat various urinary disorders according symptoms presented by the patient.

Foods to avoid when Pregnant

Avoid alcohol during pregnancy. Alcohol has been linked to premature delivery, mental retardation, birth defects, and low birthweight babies.

Limit caffeine to no more than 300 mg per day. The caffeine content in various drinks depends on the beans or leaves used and how it was prepared. An 8-ounce cup of coffee has about 150 mg of caffeine on average while black tea has typically about 80 mg. A 12-ounce glass of caffeinated soda contains anywhere from 30-60 mg of caffeine. Remember, chocolate (especially dark chocolate) contains caffeine -- sometimes a significant amount.

The use of saccharin is strongly discouraged during pregnancy, because it can cross the placenta and may remain in fetal tissues. But, the use of other non-nutritive or artificial sweeteners approved by the FDA is acceptable during pregnancy. These FDA-approved sweeteners include aspartame (Equal or NutraSweet), acesulfame-K (Sunett), and sucralose (Splenda). These sweeteners are considered safe in moderation, so talk with your health care provider about how much non-nutritive sweetener is acceptable during pregnancy.

Decrease the total amount of fat you eat to 30% or less of your total daily calories. For a person eating 2000 calories a day, this would be 65 grams of fat or less per day.
Limit cholesterol intake to 300 mg or less per day.

Do not eat shark, swordfish, king mackerel, or tilefish (also called white snapper), because they contain high levels of mercury.

Avoid soft cheeses such as feta, Brie, Camembert, blue-veined, and Mexican-style cheese. These cheeses are often unpasteurized and may cause Listeria infection. There’s no need to avoid hard cheese, processed cheese, cream cheese, cottage cheese, or yogurt.

Avoid raw fish, especially shellfish like oysters and clams.

My girlfriend and I had oral sex. We did not have actual intercourse. But due to oral sex I ejaculated. Ejaculation took place at a distance from her vagina. But im not sure about after ejaculation we bought our genitals close or not. What are her chances of pregnancy?

By and large there is hardly any chance unless you have ejaculated at Vagina or very near to Vagina. Still if you are worried directly consult with an expert nearby and get guidance after giving complete details. Also in future be careful and learn some basic discipline for sexual relationships in safe way.

Yes pregnancy can be confirmed by ultrasound as early as 4 to 5 weeks. Xray is not done to diagnose pregnancy as the radiation is harmful to the growing foetus.

Prescribing medicine is beyond the scope of this forum. The common causes of infertility are many But if you have just tried for 4 months, its too early to go for medicine Try sex during fertile period for a good year, this will maximise your chances of becoming pregnant by making the sperms available at ovulation. While sperms are deposited in vagina at every act of sex, the determining factor is whether ovum has been liberated in the womens body at that time and whether these two ovum and sperms meet and cause fertilisation Ovulation doesnot happen every month and there is no physical symptom which can predict its occurrence, so its a trial game. Keep on your effort. If you do conceive you will miss your period If you want to take medicines for becoming pregnant, you will have to meet a Gynecologist
