Several things can be done to prevent cold: -Always wash your hands after coughing or sneezing into your hands, blowing your nose, after touching someone who is sick, or when using public restrooms or telephones. -Cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze or cough. -Get plenty of rest/sleep.Avoid people who have a cold or cold symptoms. -Drink plenty of fluids(veg/tomato soups, dal water/coconut water/herbal tea etc), and eat nutritious food(like sprouts/boiled eggs without yolk with milk). Avoid foods or drinks with caffeine -Treatment:A cold usually lasts for a week or two. Unless you develop complications, you shouldn't need medical treatment. -Gargle to keep from getting a sore throat.Take only lukewarm water to drink during the day -Use saline nasal sprays or nasal irrigation. -Tablet nasorest-p once/twice daily may ease breathing. -Do steam inhalation once or twice daily. -Complications like infections of ears, throat, sinuses or lungs must be treated with antibiotics. -Cough- For dry cough.Take syrup Alex-D.(1 tsp thrice daily) -Productive cough:it brings up mucus from behind the throat or lungs.Use syrup Alex. -Get chest xray done if cough lasts for more than a week and consult doctor immediately. -Head and Body Aches- Take tablet dolo-650 mg for fever once or twice daily

Discharging Ear - Know Its Causes And Ways To Treat!

Discharging Ear - Know Its Causes And Ways To Treat!

Ear discharge may occur due to several reasons. Injury or trauma to the ear canal, a ruptured ear drum or an infection in the middle ear may be the most common causes of ear discharge. Eczema, swimmer’s ear and other skin irritations may also lead to this problem.

It is a common phenomenon in children and adults alike. Most ear infection results in discharge from the ear. This ear discharge is medically known as otorrhea, and it is any fluid that comes out of the ear, mainly in the form of pus.

Causes

1. Most of the time, any fluid leaking out of an ear is ear wax.

2. A ruptured eardrum can cause a white, slightly bloody, or yellow discharge from the ear. Dry crusted material on a child's pillow is often a sign of a ruptured eardrum. The eardrum may also bleed. Causes of a ruptured eardrum include:

  • Foreign object in the ear canal
  • Injury from a blow to the head, foreign object, very loud noises, or sudden pressure changes (such as in airplanes)
  • Inserting cotton-tipped swabs or other small objects into the ear
  • Middle ear infection
  • Other causes of ear discharge include:

3. Eczema and other skin irritations in the ear canal

4. Swimmer's ear -- with symptoms such as itching, scaling, a red or moist ear canal, and pain that increases when you move the earlobe

Treatment

While there are some simple home remedies to treat this disorder, always consult an ENT specialist if the discharge does not stop after the application of those treatments. Let us look at some common ways to treat this disorder.

  1. Ear Drops: There are antibiotic ear drops, and there are antiseptic ear drops. Antibiotic ear drop will dry your ear and stop the discharge in your ear. It mainly kills the bacteria that have caused the infection. There are certain side-effects of using antibiotic ear drops, which include dizziness, itching in the ear, earache or yeast infection. However, these side-effects are extremely mild and go away as soon as you stop using the antibiotic drops. The antiseptic ear drops are not as effective as the antibiotic ear drops, and hence, these aren’t used that much to treat any infection.
  2. Antibiotic Tablets: Antibiotic tablets are also an option to treat ear infections, but again these are not that effective as the antibiotic ear drops have proven to be.
  3. Surgical procedures: An operation called myringoplasty or tympanoplasty is conducted to repair the hole in your eardrum which has been discharging the pus. This operation has a greater chance to improve your hearing abilities. Doctors resort to this option only when your infection cannot be treated by ear drops.

When to Contact a Medical Professional

Call your health care provider if:

  1. The discharge is white, yellow, clear, or bloody.
  2. The discharge has lasted more than 5 days.
  3. The discharge is the result of an injury.
  4. There is a loss of hearing.
  5. There is severe pain.
  6. The discharge is associated with other symptoms, such as fever or headache.
  7. There is redness or swelling coming out of the ear canal.

In case you have a concern or query you can always consult an expert & get answers to your questions!

If ear is discharging repeatedly than you need to go for ear surgeon this may be due to the perforation of your ear drum, get audiology done for it than revert back.

Hi lybrate-user Since you have symptoms from two months you must be having some medicines. Kindly share the treatment you had /having. Vertigo is a medical term which describes a sense if rotation even while stationary. It can often be confused with lightheadedness, generalised weakness, dizziness. Vertigo may be caused by problems in your peripheral (Ear &balance mechanism inside ear known as the vestibular system) or central nervous system. A complete checkup is required to isolate the cause. Peripheral vestibular  system causing vertigo symptoms may need initial medications to stabilise followed by Vestibular Rehabilitation  exercises. A good quality  of life can be achieved if properly managed. A Pure tone audiometry  and tympanometry  can detect any problem in the ear nerves and tympanic membrane pressure (both of which can be abnormal in case of ear diseases) An Xray of the Cervical Spine (AP /Lat/Lat-oblique to check for cervical spondylitis CT brain and a complete  haemogram  are some of the baseline tests needed for a good evaluation  of vertigo. Another cause of vertigo often not diagnosed by CT /MRI BPPV Benign Paroxysmal positional vertigo BPPV can be treated with Epleys manoeuvre  and Vestibular  Rehabilitation  exercises. With regular vestibular exercise you can be symptom free  and lead a normal life. Also if you still ha e symptoms with your current dose of Vertin the  dose will gs e to be adjusted. *Tips for starting vestibular exercise: No. 1: Sit on your bed with legs hanging. Keep your head straight and just by moving your  pupils first look to the right. Hold this position. Count to 10. If you have dizziness  with right gaze still hold that gaze. Then move your pupil to the left. Do this for 10 minutes for two weeks. When you can move your pupil to either side without symptoms, you can start another exercise. Share your reports. Detailed symptoms, medicines and I can help you better. Take care. You will be all right soon. Hope this helps Start this and let me know. Hope this helps Thanks.

I have a little pain in my throat from last night I don't know why I usually have habit of smoking and drinking.

B.A.M.S, MD (Ayu.) Kayachikitsa
Ayurveda,
I have a little pain in my throat from last night I don't know why I usually have habit of smoking and drinking.
1. As smoking habit is there it could possibly be smoker's cough related pharyngitis. 2. See an ENT specialist to exclude other pathology of oral cavity like tonsillitis, till then: Avoid: deep-fried food (samosa, pakoda, chips, idli), sour fruits (mosambi, oranges, green grapes, lemon, shrikhand), protect neck area while riding a bike, traveling in bus/car with open window panes, cold water, rice and milk at night. Take: lukewarm water with honey for gargles, moong/arhar dal, mulethi, laung, old brown rice, chapatti with no oil, papaya, black grapes. 3 Have a Physician checkup to rule out any underlying/hidden cause with relevant investigations. Prescription medicines for you are: kas amrit syrup, sitopladi churan, tankan bhasm, khadiradi vati.
