What is perforated ear drum? please suggest treatment for this if it is treatable?

CCPH, BHMS
Homeopath, Bhilai
A ruptured eardrum, like a clap of thunder, can happen suddenly. You may feel a sharp pain in your ear, or an earache that you've had for a while suddenly goes away. It's also possible that you may not have any sign that your eardrum has ruptured. A ruptured eardrum -- also known as a perforated eardrum or a tympanic membrane perforation -- can lead to complications such as middle ear infections and hearing loss. It may also require surgery to repair the damage to the eardrum. But typically, especially if you protect your ear, a ruptured eardrum will heal on its own without treatment within a couple of months. Or you cn refer to a gud homoeopath nearby for gud results.

I want my nose to be small. almost I can afford it to be as it is. Some advices pls.

MS - ENT, MBBS
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Bangalore
Yes, your nose can be made small by rhinoplasty surgery. But as you are just 17years old, I suggest you to wait some more time and let your facial growth finish. Its better to wait until you are 21 years old and then think about surgery.

Take a break every 1-2 minutes until you feel relatively cooler. Do it for 10 minute twice or thrice a day. Sir, 2 years former I found my left ear waxing so I went to see an ENT specialist. He told me everything is okay and prescribed me an ear drop and told you will be fine and you need not come again. After a someday my ear stopped waxing. But now my ear (left) again started waxing. And from last one month when I salivate or blow with pressure I fell something in my upper left throat in a very small area. There us no pain in throat nor any problem with swallowing. No other symptoms are seen. Sometimes I feel that it is connected to my ear problem. I was afraid of my throat problem so I went to a general physician. He told my that it is allergic and prescribed me levocetirizine. I am worried. Please help me!

MBBS, MS - ENT
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Bangalore
The sensation you are having in the throat on swallowing or blowing are due to obstruction of the Eustachian tube (ET), most likely due to allergy. This tube connects the roof of the throat to the ear and helps in pressure equalization. It is closed at rest and opens automatically when the air pressure in the ear is higher to equalize pressure. You can also open the tube voluntarily by repeatedly swallowing or blowing with pressure with the nose closed. However this is not routinely recommended as you may damage the sensitive Eustachian tube or even the eardrum by applying too much pressure! Chronic allergy often causes the tube to malfunction- this is felt as a poorly localized sensation in the roof of the throat towards the ear of the affected side. It is also reported that ears with ET obstruction are more prone to wax accumulation, however this has never been proven. You are taking the correct medicine for allergy. You could consider meeting an ENT specialist who will be able to inspect the ear and remove the wax accumulation if any. He might also prescribe you further treatment for your allergy (such as anti allergic nasal sprays) if required. Don't be worried- take action to secure your health and well being! God Bless!

This dizziness is not due to weakness, this may be due to ear pathology, hence you need to get ear testing done which is audiometry. This will further suggest us in detail pathology of ears.

I am 26 year old girl. Recently I done cbc in which my esr was 30. I am just having symptoms like very warm sensation in throat, little warm in whole body, pain in ear. I was in stress frm last 6 month and not getting enough sleep. Is it due to my lifestyle problem? Because I do not think it is due to infection. I ate and drink simple homemade food. please tel me is anything to be worried about this?

Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine and Surgery (BAMS)
ENT Specialist, Solapur
Hello, Whenever you skip your night's sleep your body try to cover the sleep when you get a little rest in daytime. When your body experiences such sleep deprivation for a longer period it acts the same way as it would in an infection, as organs and body tissues need rest to regain their work and work efficiently. Sleeping late at night may build up oxidants which may be harmful and you need to change your lifestyle.

Ringing In Ears - What Does it Mean and When to Seek Help

Ringing In Ears - What Does it Mean and When to Seek Help

Ringing in the ears, medically called Tinnitus, is a condition in which the individual hears a certain sound continuously in the ears.

The nature of this sound varies with different individuals. The sound may be whistling, buzzing or bell-like; it might be low or high; seeming to come from a far point or from inside of one's body.

Tinnitus in most cases is subjective where only the affected individual is able to hear the sounds. In some cases, the condition might also be objective wherein the doctor/examiner might be able to hear the sounds on examining.

Understanding the most common cause:

The process of sound waves travelling from the ear to the brain is facilitated by hair cells. When these hair cells are damaged, the brain does not receive signals which cause dysfunction in the activity of neurons. This dysfunctional neuron activity results in the illusion of sounds in the said individual. This illusion is referred to as Tinnitus.

Other causes that might result in Tinnitus are:

Damage around the hearing sections of the brain also might result in ringing sounds / tinnitus. Excessive noise might result into Tinnitus and if not prevented might even progress to hearing loss. There are also some drugs that may cause or worsen the condition.

When to seek help:

In the case of a sudden episode of Tinnitus, it may be associated with hearing loss. Such an episode should be followed by visiting the doctor immediately to prevent any further damage.

Sometimes, the ringing sound occurs rhythmically with your heart beat. It might be because of a pulsating blood vessel and/or because of a sudden hike in blood pressure. This condition would also be relatively easy to cure if reported immediately to the doctor.

If ringing sound occurs with a certain movement, it might be associated with stroke in some cases. In such incidents, conveying the exact symptoms and seeking help sooner would help in treating the underlying cause effectively.

With the first episode of Tinnitus, a regular medication that you intake should be shown to the doctor to rule out medication as the cause or to discontinue a certain medication if found to the causative agent.
