How to Keep Your Eyes Healthy As You Age?

If health is lost, everything is lost and your eyes are one of the most essential parts of your health. Good eyesight is the key to a happy life. But in order to maintain good eyesight, it is important to keep a few things in mind. However, aging causes several disorders related to eyes.

Here’s what you should do to continue life till the fullest with healthy eyes even in your sixties:

  1. Check your diet: For healthy eyes, you should take care of your diet first. Include foods rich in vitamins A and C, such as green leafy vegetables and fish in your diet. Omega-3 fatty acids are also necessary for good vision as they improve the health of Macula, which is responsible for central vision. Alcohol and unsaturated fats are harmful for the macula. High-fat levels in the body obstruct proper flow of blood through arteries. Thus, eyes also suffer due to low oxygen supply.

  2. Quit smoking at the earliest: Smoking poses great threat to your eyes. It increases the level of oxidative stress. This is harmful for the eyes.

  3. Exercise: Regular exercise improves the blood circulation in our body. Thus, sufficient blood reaches the eyes which further aids sufficient supply of oxygen.

  4. Use sunglasses: Protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays. Wear sunglasses when you are travelling outdoors as UV rays are extremely harmful for the eyes.

  5. Don’t overstrain your eyes: Avoid sitting in front of the television and computer for too long. Keep the computer below the eye level. Keep the screen at a distance. Remember to blink frequently and keep the colour format not too bright or saturated.

  6. Rinse your eyes: Wash and rinse your eyes regularly with cold water to get rid of dust particles.

  7. Be alert: In case of any injury related to the eye, seek immediate medical help. Don’t ignore the injury.

  8. Visit your doctor: It is important to get your eyes checked by a professional at least once in every two years. The doctor should watch and examine your pupil by dilating it. He must assess the fact that whether you are vulnerable to any eye disease or not and take necessary steps.

  9. Check your spectacles or lenses: It is important that you keep the spectacles or lenses up to date. Visit your doctor to check the power of your lens. Keep a tab on the changing power.

  10. Rubbing your eyes: Avoid rubbing your eyes if any particle gets into it. You should rather splash water to keep it intact. If you wish to discuss about any specific problem, you can consult a ophthalmologist and ask a free question.

RK was done in 1994. Due to rk incisions, vision is decreasing very fast, doctors say that shape of cornea is changing as cone. Is there is remedy to stop reshaping of cornea. Please suggest me. Thanking you.

Hello, share your eye report with me, there must be figures which indicates power of each eye. Include the following for getting better vision: vitamins a, c, e, and minerals like copper and zinc are essential to eyesight. Get the antioxidants from dark leafy greens, egg yolks, yellow peppers, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, and carrots. Include garlic and onions. Blueberries, grapes as they have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that can help improve your vision. Dha is a fatty acid found in coldwater fish like salmon, sardines and mackerel. Exercises for strengthening eye muscles: -begin by partially closing your eyes; the lids should only be halfway shut. After holding for 10-15 seconds, close your eyes very slowly. Take a few deep breaths to increase oxygen in the blood. -warm your eyes. Rub your palms together to create heat, and then place them against your eyes for five seconds. Repeat this three times. -hold a pen at arm's length. Focus your gaze on the tip of the pen. Bring the pen closer to your nose at a slow and steady pace. Repeat this exercise 5-10 times. -concentrate your vision on the tip of your nose. Then shift your gaze to an object further away, either at arm's length or 20 feet away. Then shift your eyes back to the tip of your nose. Repeat this exercise 10 times. -sit in a relaxed but upright position. Begin by look to the left-most position (without moving your head) and hold to stretch your eye muscles. Hold for 5 counts. Blink and return your gaze back to look straight in front of you. Then look to the right-most position with your gaze and hold for 5 counts. Repeat 3 times, blinking between each hold. Then, repeat this exercise looking up and then down. Do not forget about blinking. -sit in a relaxed but upright position. Look up and to your right for 5 seconds. Return your gaze to center. Look up to and to your left for 5 seconds. Return your gaze to center. Look down and to your right for 5 seconds. Return your gaze to center. Look down and to your left for 5 seconds. Insufficient sleep may weaken your vision, so shoot for 8 hours of sound sleep a night. Rest your eyes 10 minutes for every 50 minutes spent reading or in front of the computer. If your eyes feel overly tired, lie down and place cooling cucumber slices over your eyelids. Medication: take homoeopathic medicine which will help you in preventing first and then reducing the power of your eyes (if the eye power is less). Take physostigma 6/ thrice daily for 1 month and instill euphrasia eye drops twice a day. Thereafter, revert back for further guidance.

Slight redness can be due to many causes like tiredness, less sleep, anxiety etc. If you have any discharge then it can be conjunctivitis.

Dear lybrate user:- you r suffering from wrinkle, dark circle below eyes, pls avoid stress & strain, improve laughing personality. Take regullar aerobic exercises, coloured fruits & vegetables, plenty of water.

I don't know from your history whether you are having increased iop, with changes in optic nerve ,if no change it is ocular hypertension but you should consult ophthmologist immediately for advice so that you may start some anti-glaucoma eye drops so that iop may be controlled to normal level so that there may not be any further damage .

I want to ask whenever I use mobile and after some time my eyes can't see in proper way.

Hello, You may be over-using mobile, so avoid using mobile for long hours, get your eyesight tested and take more of green vegetables, carrots, fruits, salads, etc. Medication: Use Euphrasia Eye drops/ twice daily.

Hi, If your eyes burns or feels as if flammed while riding bike only then the blow of wind or else exposure to sunlight could be the reason for making the eyes dry which causes tears from eyes. Wear a branded goggles with UV-protection whenever you are out in the sun, also wear a hat helmet over it (which is mandatory for your head's protection as well as it covers eyes). Keep blinking your eyes frequently. Drink at least 10-12 glasses of water or even more than that in a day if you do have to travel in the sunlight for long hours. Medication: Use Euphrasia Eye drops twice daily and have Euphrasia 30/ twice a day for 1 week.
