How Can Nasal Obstruction Cause Clogged Ears?

MBBS, MS - ENT, DNB
Ear-Nose-Throat (ENT) Specialist, Gurgaon
How Can Nasal Obstruction Cause Clogged Ears?

It is very common for patients with nasal obstruction to develop clogged ear as well. The back of the nose opens into a tunnel also known as the Eustachian tube. This tube goes up to the ear. In case the ears get clogged the pressure is released by popping of the ears. This is achieved by swallowing, yawning, and trying to blow the nose. When ear pops the tunnel opens and allows the pressure to release from the ear.

Reasons why nasal obstruction causes clogged ears:

  1. Mucosal Swelling: When the nose is obstructed, the nasal lining might swell thus making it difficult to breath. This might also lead to swelling in the tunnel of the ear causing it to shut down. Sometimes an ear pop does not happen in this condition and this is called as Eustachian tube dysfunction.
  2. Negative Pressure inside the Nose: In nose obstruction when the patient tries to breathe through the nose there is negative pressure. This might build up near the opening of the Eustachian tube or the back of the nose. This pressure gets transmitted to the ear and results in a negative pressure in the ear which leads to the clogging of the ear.
  3. Bernoulli's Principle: This principle states that in case of an inviscid flow, increase in speed of the fluid happens side by side with a pressure decrease.

Causes of Nasal Obstruction:

Obstruction or congestion of the nose leads to a stuffy and inflamed nose. In minor illnesses like fever, cold, sinus infection and flu stuffy nose can happen. This congestion might last for a week. In case the congestion is long term then the causes for it are:

  1. Allergies and hay fever
  2. Chemical and environmental irritants
  3. Septum deviation
  4. Chronic sinusitis that has lasted for too long
  5. Nasal polyps and benign tumors

Symptoms of nasal decongestion are runny or stuffy nose, painful sinus, and swollen nasal tissues along with mucus buildup.

Treatment for Nasal Decongestion:
Once the nasal congestion has been found and the cause behind it has been analyzed, then treatment is must. Treatment usually includes prescription medication or over the counter drugs. Medication of the nasal decongestion involves the following:

  1. Oral Antihistamines: These are helpful in treating allergies. Common ones are loratadine (Claritin) and cetirizine (Zyrtec)
  2. Nasal Sprays: Nasal sprays which contain antihistamine like azelastine (Astelin, Astepro)
  3. Nasal Steroids: Examples of this are mometasone (Asmanex Twisthaler) or fluticasone (Flovent Diskus, Flovent HFA)
  4. Antibiotics
  5. Over the counter or prescription decongestants

I'm suffering from premature ejaculation. I do not last for a min. But reaction continues for a min. More. What homeopathic medicine should I try?

General Physician,

Ejaculation of semen during sexual intercourse before or immediately after penetration. Premature ejaculation occurs when a man ejaculates sooner during sexual intercourse than he or his partner would like. Premature ejaculation is a common sexual complaint. Estimates vary, but as many as 1 out of 3 men say they experience this problem at some time. As long as it happens infrequently, it's not cause for concern. The primary symptom of premature ejaculation is the inability to delay ejaculation for more than one minute after penetration. However, the problem may occur in all sexual situations, even during masturbation. Premature ejaculation can be classified as lifelong (primary) or acquired (secondary). Lifelong premature ejaculation occurs all or nearly all of the time beginning with your first sexual encounters. Acquired premature ejaculation has the same symptoms but develops after you've had previous sexual experiences without ejaculatory problems. Many men feel that they have symptoms of premature ejaculation, but the symptoms do not meet the diagnostic criteria for premature ejaculation. Instead these may have natural variable premature ejaculation, which is characterized by periods of rapid ejaculation as well as periods of normal ejaculation. Psychological causes Some doctors believe that early sexual experiences may establish a pattern that can be difficult to change later in life, such as: • Situations in which you may have hurried to reach climax in order to avoid being discovered • Guilty feelings that increase your tendency to rush through sexual encounters Other factors that can play a role in causing premature ejaculation include: • Erectile dysfunction. Men who are anxious about obtaining or maintaining an erection during sexual intercourse may form a pattern of rushing to ejaculate, which can be difficult to change. • Anxiety. Many men with premature ejaculation also have problems with anxiety — either specifically about sexual performance or related to other issues. • Relationship problems. If you have had satisfying sexual relationships with other partners in which premature ejaculation happened infrequently or not at all, it's possible that interpersonal issues between you and your current partner are contributing to the problem. Biological causes A number of biological factors may contribute to premature ejaculation, including: • Abnormal hormone levels • Abnormal levels of brain chemicals called neurotransmitters • Abnormal reflex activity of the ejaculatory system • Certain thyroid problems • Inflammation and infection of the prostate or urethra • Inherited traits • Nerve damage from surgery or trauma (rare) Common treatment options for premature ejaculation include behavioural techniques, topical anaesthetics, oral medications and counselling. Keep in mind that it may take a little time to find the treatment or combination of treatments that will work for you. Behavioural techniques In some cases, therapy for premature ejaculation may involve taking simple steps, such as masturbating an hour or two before intercourse so that you're able to delay ejaculation during sex. You may try avoiding intercourse for a period of time and focusing on other types of sexual play so that pressure is removed from your sexual encounters. You can also try diverting your mind before ejaculation is ready to come and proceeding after a brief break, thereby prolonging duration of intercourse / action The pause-squeeze technique You and your partner can use of a method called the pause-squeeze technique. This method works as follows: 1. Begin sexual activity as usual, including stimulation of the penis, until you feel almost ready to ejaculate. 2. Have your partner squeeze the end of your penis, at the point where the head (glans) joins the shaft, and maintain the squeeze for several seconds, until the urge to ejaculate passes. 3. After the squeeze is released, wait for about 30 seconds, then go back to foreplay. You may notice that squeezing the penis causes it to become less erect, but when sexual stimulation is resumed, it soon regains full erection. 4. If you again feel you're about to ejaculate, have your partner repeat the squeeze process. By repeating this as many times as necessary, you can reach the point of entering your partner without ejaculating. After a few practice sessions, the feeling of knowing how to delay ejaculation may become a habit that no longer requires the pause-squeeze technique. Topical anaesthetics Anaesthetic creams and sprays that contain a numbing agent, such as lidocaine or procaine, are sometimes used to treat premature ejaculation. These products are applied to the penis a short time before sex to reduce sensation and thus help delay ejaculation. A lidocaine spray for premature ejaculation is available Although topical anaesthetic agents are effective and well-tolerated, they have potential side effects. For example, some men report temporary loss of sensitivity and decreased sexual pleasure. In some cases, female partners also have reported these effects. In rare cases, lidocaine or procaine can cause an allergic reaction. Oral medications Many medications may delay orgasm. Although none of these drugs is specifically worthwhile as people believe, approved medications may be prescribed for either on-demand or daily use, and may be prescribed alone or in combination with other treatments to treat premature ejaculation, some are used for this purpose, including antidepressants, analgesics and phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors You can ask me personally if you want these tablets with your full health de

As per standard protocols, there needs to at least 5 years of seizure free period before tapering and stopping medications. Newer protocols followed by some doctors believe in stopping medications even if there is 1 year of seizure free interval. It is best that you consult with your neurologist and let him decide on what is best for you.

I am 40 years old and my morning fasting blood sugar reading ranges between 129 to 139 for the last 4 months. I didn't take any medicine yet. My blood uric acid levels are also high (almost 9), even when I am a pure vegetarian (not even eggs) for the last 15 years. I tried a bit of homeopathy medicine for a couple of months about 3 months before. Not much of a change. It brought down the fasting sugar reading from 139 to 129 and I discontinued that medicine. I don't take any sugar for tea or coffee. I have cut down on my sweets intake and also have changed to organic rice with brown husks and sometime to millet like horsetail millet. I dont drink alcohol. I drink only green tea. I also have ran a half marathon of 21 kms in less than three hours about 20 days ago. I feel tired after lunch and feel like my head is spinning and want to lied down and sleep and when I wake up after an hour, my head feels very heavy. My urine is always yellow (from slight to dark yellow. I married at the age of 38 and have a son of 1 year old. My Mom, my Sister, and my paternal Grandmother all have had diabetes. Is there any way that this sugar reading could be brought down to 100 by mere lifestyle changes and not by medicine. Has it occurred to anyone before. If you need any more information pertaining to my question please provide me with rightful answer Thank you.

I am 21 year old working student. For past few days I am having headache and it is not going even though I sleep well.

Diploma in Gastroenterology, Diploma In Pulmonary Medicine , MSCP, BHMS, SVD( skin and veneral diseases)

I am 21 year old working student. For past few days I am having headache and it is not going even though I sleep well.
This is not meant as a substitute for seeing a Doctor which I recommend. However, if you read this and follow the recommendations at the end you may find the headache goes away before the Dr.’s appointment date. Headaches/Migraines can be caused either (1) internally (e.g. Injury to the head) or (2) externally (e.g.STRESS). What your DDS, ER and MD may not tell you are that most headaches are stress related. Even from your write up you sound stressed. They can be further broken down into the following categories and the treatment depends on the type of headache you have. MIGRAINE headaches are usually one sided, more common in females and characterized by at least one of the following; sensitivity to light, pain behind one eye, throbbing brought on by bright lights, chocolate, cheese, red wine or menstrual cycle. You can also have a visual aura around lights and things may taste odd. HYOERTENSION headaches are at the top and back of your head and throb. You usually wake up with this headache and after about 3 to 4 hours it subsides and may be caused by high blood pressure. You may need medicines to reduce your high blood pressure. CLUSTER headaches can be seen in an adolescent to adult, more common in males, one sided, usually over temple or eye area, may have a blood shot eye (s), and may wake you up at night, runny nose, sweating, tearing of the eyes, usually worse in Spring or Fall (allergy season) and lasts 15 min. To 2 hrs. MUSCULAR TENSION headaches feels: band-like distribution around head - like wearing a very tight head band and is brought on by stress, tension, fatigue and work. TEMPORAL Arthritis headaches usually in the over age 50 crowd and are characterized by one side of temple area, pain in jaw, burning, aching, throbbing, sensitive scalp, fever and tender arteries. If you experience visual symptoms go to ER. CERVICOGENIC (neck caused) headaches - Pain in upper neck and back of head or pain when moving the head with reduced movement in neck area is brought on by stress, head movement and head alignment. It may be confused as it can mimic a migraine headache including nausea. If it is a head and neck related alignment you can have temporal headaches or headaches that arc from behind the ear forward. They are characterized by possible sharp pain behind your ear at the base of the skull along with correlated shoulder pain which can last for days and weeks at a time until misalignment is corrected. Medications provide only short term relief when taken. SINUS headaches are localized in nature; certain positions are worse like the nose area, steady throb, and worse in the morning and may be seasonal. SUBARACHNOID Hemorrhage headaches are abrupt onset, constant stiff neck, feels like someone hit you in the head, Caused by high blood pressure, stress or aneurysm can be life threatening. BRAIN Tumor headaches are characterized by; onset in morning and evening, varies from mild to severe, may throb, wakes you up at night, symptoms getting worse, neck stiffness worse than ever. SUBDURAL Hematoma headaches are caused by trauma. It is a slow bleed in the brain. People can and do die from this. Here is what you do for them besides making a Doctor’s appt. Migraines, muscular tension, cervicogenic, and some sinus and cluster headaches may be helped by a chiropractor. If it is sinus, you need to ask the chiropractor if they have a sinus/cranial treatment. For Hypertension, cluster, temporal arteritis and brain tumor-see a Dr. For Temporal arteritis with visual impairment, subarachnoid hemorrhage and subdural hematoma, go to the ER now. In addition to SEEING a Doctor you may consider counseling. While you are waiting for the Dr.’s and or counselor’s appt. You might try the following and end up cancelling the appts. As it may work! There are three home remedies that may work for you as they do/did for me: First drink 16 to 24 ounces of water not soda as dehydration may cause headaches. The second home remedy for all headaches that has worked for me and even my most skeptical friends is eating a banana! My MOST skeptical of friends was SO DESPERATE he eventually tried it and claims that it cures 40% of his headaches/migraines. Bananas are loaded with Potassium which helps alleviate all headaches. In addition it is very filling and an empty stomach can also aggravate a headache. Third after drinking water, eating a banana and taking your chosen OTC meds take a SHOWER. Other than that OTC meds are your only alternative. Then go take a nap. De-stress by; turning off the phone, turning off the TV, turning off the computer, and don’t watch the news! Time to do everything to DE-STRESS! Hope this helps!
